Novelty features update the children’s plastic book line
The latest children’s plastic books highlight pages with pop-up sections and multifunction aspects.
China makers of children’s plastic books are incorporating innovative elements to promote the category.
The latest releases come in novelty cartoon character- or animal-shaped pages, and a number even employ pop-up sections. The latter includes elevated cutouts and compartments that can be opened.
Manufacturers provide multifunction models as well. The leaves on several EVA foam versions may be taken apart and reassembled similar to jigsaw puzzles. Moreover, these pieces sometimes double as craft materials for DIY projects.
Because plastic books from China often target users below 3 years old, many serve as bath accompaniments and early educational tools. Among the typical subject matters are numbers, letters, basic words, pictures and fairy tales.
Products are mainly available in PVC or EVA sheets, or EVA foam. The first two are typically printed then attached to a 1.2 to 3mm sponge. The edges are sealed with high-frequency welding machines before the pages are cut into shape. Square 10×10 or 15×15cm versions are conventional.
As regards EVA foam releases, very few makers are capable of printing multicolor images on the material. Most companies therefore opt to put the pictures and text on paper, which is later adhered to the synthetic.
Other companies offering EVA foam variants employ precision laser-cutting machines to create thousands of shapes such as numbers, letters, geometric figures and animals. These are then embedded onto pages that have matching hollow spaces.
China-made children’s plastic books are between $0.25 and $2. Prices are determined by the printing process and materials used, the number of pages and design complexity.
Regular single-color silk-screened patterns are a less expensive option, suitable for symmetric solid-toned sheets. Costlier CMYK versions are multihued and can even provide gradient effects.
In terms of materials, EVA is generally valued higher than PVC. Granules in the former are $4,000 to $4,200 per ton, while PVC counterparts are $1,080 to $1,400. Further, one page in EVA and PVC sheet is $0.25 and $0.10, respectively. A single 1.5 to 8mm-thick EVA foam leaf is $0.10 to $0.25.
Rates, however, vary when the different processes and inputs are combined. For instance, a 10×10cm EVA book with eight pages and single-color silk-screened graphics is $0.90. Six-leafed PVC models that measure 15×15cm and boast CMYK prints are between $0.35 and $0.50.
In general, low-end releases are $0.25 to $0.50. Most are in 3P PVC sheets, with some utilizing 1.5 to 2mm EVA foam. Midrange models are quoted at $0.55 to $1. They are made of 6P PVC or EVA sheets, or 2 to 5mm-thick EVA sponge.
High-end children’s plastic books are $1.50 to $2, and boast laser-cut, pop-up and multifunction DIY craft versions.

Writing Children’s Books For Dummies $11.99 Everyone loves a children’s book. And many dream about writing one. But is it actually possible for an unpublished writer—armed with a good story idea and a love of kids—to write, sell, publish, and promote a book? Yes, it is! Veteran children’s book publishing executive and author Lisa Rojany Buccieri and author Peter Economy show you how, in their incredibly useful 2005 first edition of Writing Children’s Books For Dummies® . Buccieri and Economy begin by explaining the basics of the children’s book business, from the nuts and bolts of the various formats and genres—with helpful illustrations to aid you—to the intricacies of the book publishing market, a list of recent award-winning books, and a first peek into the particular mind set that writing children’s books requires. (Hint: Throw out the adult rules, and think like a kid!) Then the authors dive into the actual writing process itself, with tips on setting up a workspace, brainstorming great book ideas, researching the subject you decide on, even speaking with the sorts of kids you hope will eventually read the book. They show you how to create compelling characters and develop them in the manuscript; how to outline and write a plot "arc" of conflict, change, and resolution; how to master the difficult art of writing dialogue; and how to use active (rather than passive) language to keep your story moving along and interesting to young minds. Or, if you’re planning to write a creative nonfiction children’s book—on a topic such as science, nature, or a historical figure, for example—the authors include a chapter on this, too. Ready, set, go… it’s time to sit down and write! Once you’ve finished your book, however, the process has only begun. Now you will refine, submit, and hopefully sell your manuscript. Here again, the authors of Writing Children’s Books For Dummies come through for you. They deliver solid advice on hiring an illustrator—or not; participating in workshops and conferences to learn the business and hone a story; finding an agent; and, finally, submitting the manuscript to publishers and—if you are successful—signing a contract. Along the way, the authors also include tips on handling rejection; a quick primer on the various editors in publishing houses (and how they work to make your book its best); and making a plan to publicize the book, including hiring a publicist if necessary. Like all For Dummies ® books, Writing Children’s Books For Dummies highlights "The Part of Tens," which includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story and More Than Ten Great Sources for Storylines. And the ever-helpful Cheat Sheet includes Tips for Editing your Children’s Book Manuscript, Children’s Book No-No’s, Twelve Commandments for Writing Younger Children’s Books, and Tips on Promotion. From setting down that first word on paper to doing a successf |

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Jugendweihe (youth consecration) is a secular coming of age ceremony practiced by German 14 year olds. It originated among the secular societies in the 19th century as an alternative to Confirmation by the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. It was especially widespread in East Germany, where atheism was encouraged under the GDR, but has become less popular since German reunification. Today it is occasionally known as Jugendfeier (youth ceremony). The term Jugendweihe first appeared in 1852, to mark a new form of initiation developed by the secular movements, who developed a course of moral instruction for their children, founded on cultural history, as an alternative to Christian teachings. The concluding Jugendweihe was above all a ceremony to mark the child’s leaving school, and so was held at the age of 14. Since the 1890s the form of the ceremony has remained largely unchanged. The teacher makes a speech about the humanist worldview, the young person makes a pledge, and is given ‘pages of remembrance’ (Erinnerungsblätter) and a commemorative book. The ceremony is broken up |

Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: John Bardeen (May 23, 1908 – January 30, 1991) was an American physicist and electrical engineer, the only person to have won the Nobel Prize in Physics twice: first in 1956 with William Shockley and Walter Brattain for the invention of the transistor; and again in 1972 with Leon Neil Cooper and John Robert Schrieffer for a fundamental theory of conventional superconductivity known as the BCS theory. The transistor revolutionized the electronics industry, allowing the Information Age to occur, and made possible the development of almost every modern electronical device, from telephones to computers to missiles. Bardeen’s developments in superconductivity, which won him his second Nobel, are used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In 1990, John Bardeen appeared on LIFE Magazine’s list of “100 Most Influential Americans of the Century.” John Bardeen was born in Madison, Wisconsin on May 23, 1908. He was the second son of Dr. Charles Russell Bardeen and Althea Harmer Bardeen. He was one of five children. His father, Charles Bardeen, was Professor of Anatomy and the first Dean of the Medical School of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!: How Fathers Deal With Family Break-ups $37 Popular culture often portrays divorced fathers as deadbeats who have little interest in caring for the emotional, physical, and financial needs of their children. In the stereotype-shattering book, “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!”, Gerhard Amendt presents the long-neglected plight of the divorced father who is plagued by grief and loneliness after being separated from his children. Based on surveys and in-depth interviews of thousands of such dads, Amendt reveals how fathers cope with trying to salvage their own lives while simultaneously maintaining relationships with their children after a painful divorce.Amendt’s incisive look at divided families also explores the impact that a single-parent household has on children’s well-being, criticizing the American tendency to over-pathologize normal reactions to familial upheaval. Even the most civilized of divorces, Amendt argues, can cause rage, sadness, potential health problems, and behavioral disturbances in otherwise well-adjusted children. The broad spectrum of experiences recounted in “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!” will be essential reading for anyone interested in, or personally shaped by, the changing face of the modern family. |

It is a joy to have a child, I can’t even describe it $60 The importance of having children cannot be underestimated and it seems that not even a life threatening condition will stop this. The availability of Antiretroviral (ARVs) that delay HIV progression and improve quality of life of HIV infected individuals and the roll-out of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) have brought renewed hope among many couples and individuals in South Africa. The narratives in this book point to the urgency to provide focused and holistic counseling and services for women of reproductive ages in South Africa. There is a need to allay concerns and for more accessible ways of enabling women living with HIV to have babies with less anxieties around transmission, childbirth, recovery post-partum and long term family plans, especially in resource-constrained settings.Information should also be easily available for HIV-positive women regarding drugs interaction, a range of family planning methods, access to termination of pregnancy and adoption. |

Just Mary: The Life of Mary Evelyn Grannan $35 Just Mary and Maggie Muggins are names that will arouse memories in those who grew up with CBC radio and television in the 1940s and 1950s. The creator of these and other children’s shows, former Fredericton schoolteacher Mary Grannan, became a radio star when she hit the national airwaves in 1939, her popularity peaking when Maggie Muggins moved to television in 1955. Long before The Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup appeared, her work helped to shape the legacy of gentle children’s programming on CBC. Building on her broadcasting success, Grannan published over thirty books, most runaway best-sellers. Attired in stylish dress, extravagant hats, and enormous earrings, she made frequent guest appearances at public events across the country. She received the Beaver Award for her broadcasting and was honoured by the International Mark Twain Society and the Institute for Education by Radio at Ohio State University. “Just Mary”: The Life of Mary Evelyn Grannan is the first biography of this creative and once well-known Canadian woman. Immersing the reader in rich detail while showcasing excerpts of her writings through the years, the book presents an intimate examination of her life journey through previously unreleased personal letters, archives, an abundance of photographs, and interviews with family, friends, colleagues, and former students. This is the private Mary Grannan as the public has never before known her. |

Kiss Your Elbow – A Kentucky Memoir $16.29 You’ll want to spend every minute of your time with the O’Daniel Family, experiencing their simple adventures in a way that only this oldest daughter can weave them. Written with a sense of hope and an amazing capture of mid-twentieth century detail, you will enjoy the opportunity to:Revisit big department stores again, when Louisville’s only place to shop was downtown Spend a delightful day at Fontaine Ferry, Louisville’s famous amusement park Be part of the quarrels, love and joy – feeling the bonds of this close knit era, when dependence on family members and neighbors was essential.Experience farm life in the suburbs. Deanna’s classmates jumped rope in subdivisions while the O’Daniels slopped hogs, killed chickens, and hoped they went to school without smelling like the animals they tended.Only a few can tell their story coherently like Deanna does with this touching memoir. First born in a large rural family, she relates her passage through childhood with charming and accurate descriptions of life in Kentuckiana. A chronicle of many customs and places that are fast slipping away from our collective memories, such as her description of the country store in Nelson County, Kentucky. A book you will tell others, “I’m so fond of this one.”John Allen Boyd, Emerson Avery, That Latin TeacherDeanna’s story is of dedicated parents and (eventually) 11 children. They migrated near Louisville, Kentucky when Deanna was five. Her stories about those formative years paint a portrait in glowing colors, depicting struggles and love that molds and endures. You will love Deanna and her story.Terry Cummins, Feed My SheepO’Daniel, a gifted writer who tightly weaves her life’s journey through stories that makes growing up on a farm sound like sunshine. SUS, the latest Unified Script $62.99 Shorttitle “SUS” (Sarma’s Unified Script), invented in November 2009 is the latest Unified Script. Unified Script is the dream script of the experts, through which they believe, inventors in which the specially designed scripts can substitute the alphabet of any language in chronological order. The scripts are written by using minimum number of strokes (mostly 4), these are ’self-generating’ (such that children themselves can recreate those by following some principles) and create absolutely no change in the speaking sound or style of the language. The scripts are so easy to identify and write that it is possible for the children to learn within 25%-50% of that required for the traditional script. This may save huge time, resources and energy now required in children’s education. “SUS” can be used as second or alternate script of any language. Programs can be made for substituting the traditional scripts of any language by SUS scripts just by pressing a key. Using one script in writing many languages may be highly advantageous for the internet / mobile communications and the printing industries. |

Scribbling Women: True Tales from Astonishing Lives $19.95 In 1855, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote to his publisher, complaining about the irritating fad of “scribbling women.” Whether they were written by professionals, by women who simply wanted to connect with others, or by those who wanted to leave a record of their lives, those “scribbles” are fascinating, informative, and instructive.Margaret Catchpole was a transported prisoner whose eleven letters provide the earliest record of white settlement in Australia. Writing hundreds of years later, Aboriginal writer Doris Pilkington-Garimara wrote a novel about another kind of exile in Australia. Young Isabella Beeton, one of twenty-one children and herself the mother of four, managed to write a groundbreaking cookbook before she died at the age of twenty-eight. World traveler and journalist Nelly Bly used her writing to expose terrible injustices. Sei Shonagan has left us poetry and journal entries that provide a vivid look at the pampered life and intrigues in Japan’s imperial court. Ada Blackjack, sole survivor of a disastrous scientific expedition in the Arctic, fought isolation and fear with her precious Eversharp pencil. Dr. Dang Thuy Tram’s diary, written in a field hospital in the steaming North Vietnamese jungle while American bombs fell, is a heartbreaking record of fear and hope. Many of the women in “Scribbling Women” had eventful lives. They became friends with cannibals, delivered babies, stole horses, and sailed on whaling ships. Others lived quietly, close to home. But each of them has illuminated the world through her words.A note from the author: OOPS! On page 197, the credit for the Portrait of Harriet Jacobs on page 43 should read: courtesy of Library of Congress, not Jean Fagan Yellin. On page 197, the credit for the portrait of Isabella Beeton on page 61 should read: National Portrait Gallery, London.
