Excellent Extra-Curricular Activities For Children   by Sam Qam

Getting your child to take their subjects seriously and to understand the importance of their educational career can be tough. But when it comes to extra-curricular activities it can be a synch. Extra-curricular activities are basically anything that falls out with the remit of the prescribed school curriculum. This might be things organised by the school or may be nothing to with the school at all.

Here are some of the best activities of this kind that your child might like to get involved in:

Non-school based extra-curricular activities:

Scouts

Outside of school, scouts or guides are great places for kids to spend their time. They get to meet and hang out with friends while also learning about the outdoors, practical skills and may even get to go camping.

Ballet

Both boys and girls can find a great deal of pleasure in going to ballet classes. It is great for fitness and flexibility and can be taken up at a very young age. There may even be the opportunity to take part in a show at the end of each year which will be excellent for their confidence.

Gymnastics

Much like ballet this can be taken up at an early age and is excellent for coordination, fitness and flexibility. You never know, they may like it so much that they end up going to the Olympics one day.

School based extra-curricular activities:

School Newspaper/Radio

One type of activity that is growing in popularity are school based newspapers or radio stations. If the school has adequate technology and teachers willing to supervise, then this can be an excellent choice of activity for your child. They will learn writing and publishing skills as well as be able to explore technical sound, word processing and imaging software.

Sports Teams

Being in a sports team is a great way for your child to keep fit as well as for making friends and learning about working as a team. Most schools have a rugby or football team while some schools may also have ski teams, tennis clubs and badminton clubs.

Literary Clubs

In some secondary schools where there are kids with particularly ambitious educational plans, a literary club might exist where they can meet to chat and debate about books and literary theory. There are a range of Childrens Books available that discuss some quite meaningful social issues that certainly extend beyond the realms of pop up books.

While it may feel like school work for some, literary clubs can be excellent for your child’s general educational performance and if debate is involved they could learn important debating skills and build their public speaking confidence.

From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books

From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children’s Books

$3.99

The revised edition of From Cover to Cover offers a fresh, up-to-date look at some of the best examples of children’s literature today and also includes practical advice on how to write clearly articulated, reasoned opinions so that others can learn about books they have not yet read. A brief, updated introduction explains how children’s books evolve from manuscripts into bound books, the importance of the many different parts of a book (jacket flaps, title page, copyright, etc.), and changes in the children’s book industry, such as the creation of two new major genre awards. In addition, the author demonstrates how to think about and critically evaluate several different genres of children’s books. Included are sections about books of information (and the author’s responsibility to document sources); traditional literature (myths, legends, tall tales, folktales); poetry, verse, rhymes, and songs; picture books; easy readers and traditional books; and fiction and graphic novels. There is also a concluding chapter on how to write reviews that are both descriptive and analytical, as well as a segment on children’s literature blogs. From Cover to Cover is an invaluable resource for all professionals who wish to write book evaluations that go beyond a simple personal response.

Children of Promise

Children of Promise

$16

“Infant baptism is an issue that divides the largest Protestant denomination from its sister denominations; and it remains, in many churches, the subject of frequent and sometimes heated debate. This is particularly the case in Reformation churches where the influence of Baptist doctrine has caused members to question their practice of baptizing infants. Children of Promise is Geoffrey Bromiley’s attempt to “get at the biblical understanding which underlies the continuation of infant baptism in many of the evangelical churches.” In addition to examining the scriptural basis for baptizing infants, Bromiley also considers the meaning of baptism, the relation of baptism to the three persons of the Trinity, and the question of the salvation of infants. A concluding chapter presents a list of guidelines for churches to follow as they examine the practice of baptizing infants. “This is a superb little book, convincingly argued on biblical grounds and very well presented in a clear, commendable, irenic style.” – Thomas F. Torrance Geoffrey W. Bromiley is professor emeritus of Church History and Historical Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He is best known as the translator of numerous theological books, including the 9-volume Theological Dictionary of the New Testament.”

I Didn't Divorce My Kids!: How Fathers Deal With Family Break-ups

I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!: How Fathers Deal With Family Break-ups

$37

Popular culture often portrays divorced fathers as deadbeats who have little interest in caring for the emotional, physical, and financial needs of their children. In the stereotype-shattering book, “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!”, Gerhard Amendt presents the long-neglected plight of the divorced father who is plagued by grief and loneliness after being separated from his children. Based on surveys and in-depth interviews of thousands of such dads, Amendt reveals how fathers cope with trying to salvage their own lives while simultaneously maintaining relationships with their children after a painful divorce.Amendt’s incisive look at divided families also explores the impact that a single-parent household has on children’s well-being, criticizing the American tendency to over-pathologize normal reactions to familial upheaval. Even the most civilized of divorces, Amendt argues, can cause rage, sadness, potential health problems, and behavioral disturbances in otherwise well-adjusted children. The broad spectrum of experiences recounted in “I Didn’t Divorce My Kids!” will be essential reading for anyone interested in, or personally shaped by, the changing face of the modern family.

It is a joy to have a child, I can’t even describe it

The importance of having children cannot be underestimated and it seems that not even a life threatening condition will stop this. The availability of Antiretroviral (ARVs) that delay HIV progression and improve quality of life of HIV infected individuals and the roll-out of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) have brought renewed hope among many couples and individuals in South Africa. The narratives in this book point to the urgency to provide focused and holistic counseling and services for women of reproductive ages in South Africa. There is a need to allay concerns and for more accessible ways of enabling women living with HIV to have babies with less anxieties around transmission, childbirth, recovery post-partum and long term family plans, especially in resource-constrained settings.Information should also be easily available for HIV-positive women regarding drugs interaction, a range of family planning methods, access to termination of pregnancy and adoption.

In recent decades, increasing numbers of Australian parents have welcomed children from overseas into their families. For a variety of reasons, many of these children are past infacy at placement and the majority have been cared for in institutions. Both older age and institutional care are factors associated with an increased risk of problems. Although many studies have examined the incidence of problems, few studies have allowed parents to share their perspectives of life after adoption. In this study, 13 fathers and 15 mothers accepted the invitation to share their stories of family life post-placement. Despite a high incidence of a variety of problems, most parents were satisfied with their choice to adopt. A number of parents summarised their experience as “quite a journey.”

“Quis Custodiet Ipsas Custodies”? This thesis is an exploratory study of experiences of frontline staff working with children in a therapeutic community. The first chapter of the book explains the history of residential childcare in Ireland it then moves on to outline what therapeutic care is about. To make it easier for the reader to understand therapeutic work, the attachment theory is reflected on. The author then moves on to the field to find out from frontline staff, how this work affects them, and what is in place, or lacking, to support them to do the job in the best possible way. “Healing is a matter of time, it is also sometimes a matter of opportunity”. SUS, the latest Unified Script

SUS, the latest Unified Script

$62.99

Shorttitle “SUS” (Sarma’s Unified Script), invented in November 2009 is the latest Unified Script. Unified Script is the dream script of the experts, through which they believe, inventors in which the specially designed scripts can substitute the alphabet of any language in chronological order. The scripts are written by using minimum number of strokes (mostly 4), these are ’self-generating’ (such that children themselves can recreate those by following some principles) and create absolutely no change in the speaking sound or style of the language. The scripts are so easy to identify and write that it is possible for the children to learn within 25%-50% of that required for the traditional script. This may save huge time, resources and energy now required in children’s education. “SUS” can be used as second or alternate script of any language. Programs can be made for substituting the traditional scripts of any language by SUS scripts just by pressing a key. Using one script in writing many languages may be highly advantageous for the internet / mobile communications and the printing industries.

''Indians in the house'': Revisiting American Indians in Laura Ingalls Wilder's ''Little House'' books.

”Indians in the house”: Revisiting American Indians in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ”Little House” books.

$49.99

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s eight-novel Little House series, published between 1932 and 1943, is among the most acclaimed and controversial examples of modern children’s literature. The narrative tells the true story of Wilder’s pioneer childhood in the 1870s and 80s, including her family’s encounters with American Indians. Recently some scholars have argued that Wilder’s depiction of American Indians is derogatory, but examining Wilder’s literary devices and contextualizing the story in the eras in which it occurred and was written about reveals a more complex portrayal of Native themes. Biographical information about Wilder suggests that she deliberately crafted her story as she recorded it; such changes afforded opportunities to emphasize her political values and critique mythology associated with America’s frontier era. Analyzing the narrative in the context of frontier Kansas, and more specifically as women’s frontier literature, reveals the literary uniqueness of the Little House story and highlights fallacies inherent in the premise of Manifest Destiny. As Wilder recorded her memories with the help of her well-known libertarian daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, during the Depression they often emphasized their anti-New Deal politics and cautioned readers about the dangers of buying into “big government” policies. The Little House story also reflects trends of the Golden Age of children’s literature which demonstrated respect for children by removing didactic lessons from the literature; thus the Little House texts present the controversial subject of America’s frontier history in a manner that allows children to draw their own conclusions about it. Finally, two television versions of the Little House story present didactic, positive lessons about American Indians on the frontier, but diminish the possibility for multiple interpretations of the events inherent in Wilder’s original story. In a non-fiction article in The Missouri Ruralist in 1920, Wilder reminded her

America is a land of immigrants. We each have a unique story to tell. Most stories will never be known beyond the first generation’s memories. To fit in with the dominate culture; most immigrants were pressured into denying their cultural roots. They never passed on their language or cultural histories to the next generation. Memories are treasures we enjoy in our golden years. We keep them alive by sharing with the next generation. My greatest treasure has been discovering the roots of my identity, my cultural base in the Nation of Cape Verde. This knowledge gives me pride; it adds unique perspective and value to my life. This book expresses my quest to discover my cultural roots. My grandparents provided support for the first generation born in America to survive and strive for the American dream. They came to America to find a better life and future for those left behind. In 1909 Nicholau and Rosa Pires, emigrated to the United States from the Island of Fogo, Cape Verde. They had four children born in America, Anna, Margaret, Roche, and my father Vasco. One daughter, Mimi, born in Cape Verde, remained there. In 1947 at the age of six, my father brought me from Ohio to live with my Cape Verdean grandparents on Cape Cod. My grandfather was Portuguese educated and learned just enough English to get his U.S. citizenship in 1946. In his house only Kriolu (Cape-Verdean spoken language) was spoken. The neighborhood was primarily Cape Verdean and most was from the same area on the Island Fogo. Sandwich Road, in the village of Teaticket, Massachusetts, was like a transplanted village from Cape Verde set in America. My grandmother, Rose “Ke’Ke’” was the friendly visitor of the community. Das Haus, (The House) is a story spanning almost seventy years, and is partially based on TRUE EVENTS as told to the author by our hero Erik Goldmann (Fictitious name) and the author’s father-in-law. At the request of Erik, many of the characters and locations were changed to protect the survivors of that long ago Holocaust known as World War II. It has become a NOVEL partially based on some true events. The setting is modern day, with flashbacks to WWII Germany. This book recounts the story of an American journalist’s attempt to investigate the resurgence of Fascism throughout the world, and especially in Germany. It is actually two books in one. The story switches back and forth from modern day to WWII. It shows how Fascism is still alive and well in Germany, Europe and even in the USA. It connects a modern day investigation, to the horrors of the past. Direct experiences by the author are incorporated into the novel, and make for an exciting personal adventure by our characters. Although many of the characters are real, it had to be written as a novel based on some true events. It is the amazing adventure of two young Jewish-German children growing up in an idyllic small village near the Belgium frontier. Their lives suddenly and forever changed by the “Night of the Crystal” and their detention in Buchenwald concentration camp. His eventual release and escape to America. How a brave young man, Erik, was given another chance to redeem himself by joining the American Army on December 8th, 1941. His amazing true adventure of fighting in North Africa, Sicily, Italy; landing at Normandy and fighting all the way across France, Belgium and surviving the “Battle of the Bulge.”On February 25th, 1945 he was given command of an Army infantry unit, and allowed to liberate his own village six years after his deportation. The incredible circle of life was rejoined and completed. Unfortunately he was the only Jewish survivor of his village. The

This book explores the interaction between context and attitude in the language-in-education experiences of multilingual children in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya, East Africa. The aim was to discover how they respond to the policy and practice in language-in-education and the macro- societal influences that affect their attitudes. We discuss the realities the refugee learners face as a corollary of language use in their education and the responses towards these realities. We used the Critical Ethnography methodology to collect and analyse the data. Findings indicate that the refugees follow the Kenyan language-in-education policy, a relic of colonialism, whereby English is the medium of instruction from Class Four onwards. Many refugees have a love-hate relationship with English. They find it hard to master, yet like it as a passport to resettlement overseas. Language ideologies and macro-societal issues are explored in depth as these influence refugees’ attitudes and choices.

‘Whole-Brain’ Behaviour Management in the Classroom: Every Piece of the Puzzle

$37.07

Representing a brave and insightful shift away from narrow perspectives on behaviour management, this book draws practitioners towards a more holistic understanding of ourselves and how we impact on children’s learning and behaviour. The authors’ brilliant new conceptual model of ‘whole-brain’ behaviour management challenges existing theories about the management of children’s behavioural issues. Their pioneering ‘whole-brain’ approach draws upon a range of influences and concepts that cross discipline boundaries, expanding on the practitioner’s understanding of the complexity of children’s behaviour through their own knowledge of neuroscience, biopsychosocial theory and interpersonal awareness. The book will take the reader through a process of self-evaluation in which their preferred ways of thinking, acting and relating will be explored and interpreted in order to help them understand the impact of their ‘personal style’ on how the children in their care behave.Offering new insights and creative solutions, this is a practical guide to coach practitioners in their personal and professional development, helping them to raise the achievement of children exhibiting even the most challenging of behaviour.

The first project of this thesis is an in vitro study. This study was performed with 8 hydrocortisone topical products on the market for the purpose of comparing one Tec Lab product, a Corticool gel, to the other seven common products on the market. The permeation of these products was tested with three types of membranes: a synthetic membrane, a mouse skin, and an Epiderm(TM) using a Franz Cell apparatus. The synthetic membrane seemed to over-estimate the hydrocortisone permeation through the skin. Mouse skin has a higher permeation compared to human cultured skin, Epiderm(TM). Corticool gel (1% hydrocortisone), which has a higher hydrocortisone solubility compared to other creams and lotions, showed a significantly higher drug diffusion rate through all of the three membranes. The Corticool gel exhibited better hydrocortisone permeation than the Prescription hydrocortisone cream 2.5%. Cortizone-10 ointment (1% hydrocortisone) showed a very low hydrocortisone permeation through all of the three membranes. It is predicted that the same comparative behavior would be observed in vivo on applying these formulations. Corticool gel is suggested to be used for fast action treatment.;The second project related to a preparation of orally disintegrating tablets of melatonin and orally disintegrating tablets containing sustained-release beads of acetaminophen. A combination of superdisintegrants, amino acids, effervescent materials, and sweeteners was placed into a melatonin tablet and then compressed into a normal-shaped tablet. The melatonin tablet exhibited a short disintegration time in water, had adequate hardness, and passed the friability test. This tablet also tasted good and could be used for children and vulnerable subjects having difficulty in swallowing.;The acetaminophen tablet combines two desirable properties: fast disintegration and sustained release of the drug. Acetaminophen sustained-release beads were added inside the tablet. The tablet disintegrated very

The party chairman of the county stood up at the lectern and in a loud, booming voice, introduced “Congressman Sherrod Brown–and his lovely wife.”By Week 40 of the campaign, I had been introduced that way nearly a hundred times. I stopped counting once we hit the 50 marker. I knew I was not the point at these gatherings, and I was so proud of the man who was. Also, I realized I was getting cranky about something I could not change. If I couldn’t rely on a sense of humor, I was in for one long year on the campaign trail.Writing with her trademark warmth, wit, and common sense, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz reveals the rigors, adrenaline joys, and absolute madness of a new marriage at midlife and campaigning with her husband, now the junior senator from Ohio. She describes the chain of events leading up to Sherrod’s decision to campaign for Senate (he would not run without his wife’s unequivocal support) in a state where no Democrat had won statewide office for twelve years. She writes about the moment her friends in the press became not so friendly; the constant campaign demands on her marriage and family life; a personal tragedy that came out of the blue. She gives us a candid behind-the-scenes look at the often ludicrous trials and tribulations of being an opinionated columnist, a political wife, and a newly married woman in her forties, and the rigors of political life: audacious bloggers, ruthless adversaries, campaign fatigue, political divas, the no-small-planes agreement, and staffers young enough to be her children suddenly directing her and

A story of life and growing-up in the inner city during a more innocent time. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad, sometimes serious, sometimes as carefree and footloose as youth itself. During a time when the so-called generation gap was a wide as the ocean, these young boys journey through their young lives with hope, honesty, and dreams of being the best they can, no matter what the challenge and regardless of what it takes. The street was raw and kind, tough and educating to say the least. The times were much more innocent than today but the children were the same as they’ve always been. From tough language learned from the streets, to true values learned from their parents, friends and neighbors, growing-up in the city was an experience that left memories, values and standards unequaled by anything else experienced since those warm summer days on 29th Street.

Times were tough. I lost my job because the contract I had been working on ran out of money. Worse, my roommate planned on getting married, another loss of income. What to do? Start a bed and breakfast, suggested my friend. You have a big house, your children have moved out, and you are an excellent hostess. All you have to do is change beds and cook a breakfast. I tried it. Sometimes I had no B&B guests for weeks; other times I could not accommodate the numerous calls for reservations. Most guests were wonderful and appreciated the ample breakfast. And they were gone most of the day to visit the many attractions in southern California, like Disneyland, the closest to my home and the most popular. I loved sharing their experiences. But best of all, changing sheets and preparing breakfast provided me with the extra income needed. Money!

In this book, the half-Turkish, half-Dutch photographer Ahmet Polat  goes to Turkey in search of his roots. He reconstructs the journey his father undertook as a truck driver, attracted to the Netherlands in the 1970s in search of a better future.Polat realizes how uncommon the situation was for his parents in the 1970s, who met in the only place of entertainment in a tiny village in the south of the Netherlands. He had seen her previously standing on a dike, whre his truck had broken down earlier that day. In the nightclub, he approaches her in his broken German and then feel the spark between them. Not long afterwards, Diana’s parents are sitting in an airplane for the first time in their lives, heading for Turkey, anxiously wondering what’s in store for them. Given the situation, it is quite surprising that they see no reason for concern, and the language isn’t a problem either. Without being able to exchange a word, there is an immediate mutual understanding: two hardworking families, laborers who, despite the differences in age, religion, and origin, only want the best for their children. Ahmet Polat now understands that all those years in which he had sought acceptance in life, he had been focusing on the wrong people. In 1976, before he had even been born, both his grandfathers had taken care of that for him already….Neither here nor there… places the contemporary feelings and discussions concerning labor migration, cultural differences, minorities and identity in an original and refreshing light.

It’s postmarked New York, United States of America.I only know of one person who lives there. And it couldn’t possibly be from her.could it?Feverishly I tear open the envelope, unfold the notepaper. My mind’s in a whirl. It’s impossible to take in the words. They swim across my line of vision. The bits I manage to read here and there don’t make sense.I don’t know how long I’ve been standing here mesmerised. My mind’s blank. The neat script is dancing before my eyes. This can’t be happening. It must be a dream.I blink rapidly, shake my head, and try to focus on reality. But there’s no way I can get a grip on myself standing like a zombie here in the hallway. I must get out.I put on my coat, wanderbewildered into the first café I come to. I sit in a corner, order a coffee, sip the hot liquid. I can’t stop shivering.I hold my breath, force myself to start at the beginning, concentrate on each word. I begin to read.Dear Marie Teresa,I really don’t know how to begin.
