The story of two sisters trying to get a date for the high school prom, 10 Things I Hate About You is an updated version of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The sisters’ father is way too overprotective and won’t let the younger sibling date unless the eldest gets a date first. Featuring teen stars such as Larisa Oleynik, Julia Stiles, Andrew Keegan, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the movie was pretty good and was considered a box office success. Letters to Cleo is featured in the movie and on this soundtrack collection as one of the character’s favorite bands. They do a great job covering Cheap Trick’s 1979 hit “I Want You to Want Me” and Nick Lowe’s “Cruel to Be Kind,” keying off of the original artist’s style and throwing in a little bit of their own. Other tracks featured in the film include Semisonic’s “FNT,” Save Ferris’ “I Know,” Sister Hazel’s “Your Winter,” Jessica Riddle’s “Even Angels Fall,” Leroy’s “New World,” Ta-Gana’s “Saturday Night,” Brick’s “Dazz,” Joan Armatrading’s “The Weakness in Me,” the Cardigans’ “War,” and Madness’ “Wings of a Dove.” As good as they are, the best track is George Clinton’s immortal “Atomic Dog,” heard during one of the film’s funniest scenes. 16 Biggest Hits $9.99 Like the many other 16 Biggest Hits compilations released by Legacy, Clint Black’s entry in the budget-line series is an inexpensive and even-handed collection of his bigger hits, sequenced chronologically. The time range featured here spans from Black’s blockbuster debut album, Killin’ Time (1989), to his final release for RCA, D’lectrified (1999). A pair of Greatest Hits volumes already covered this time span, granted, and those volumes indeed served their purpose well, but it’s nice to have a cheap, single-disc option like 16 Biggest Hits. There’s one potential problem with this particular compilation, however, and it’s the even-handed approach: while it’s nice to have some of Black’s mid- to late-’90s hits featured, his late-’80s and early-’90s recordings are generally considered to be superior, with his first three albums in particular standing head and shoulders above his later releases. Those first three albums — Killin’ Time, Put Yourself in My Shoes (1990), and The Hard Way (1992) — are covered by only the first seven songs here on 16 Biggest Hits, and it’s hard not to wish there were more inclusions from those albums. After all, Killin’ Time alone spawned five Top Three hits. 16 Greatest Hits $7.99 This 16 Greatest Hits series from Passport Audio is, for the price, tough to beat. This volume by Lloyd Price is a case in point. It begins with “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” just to get things rolling. While it’s typical of budget comps to begin with the big hit, they usually conk after three or four cuts — and they usually clock in at ten or 12 cuts max — half of which are from the dead dogs files. This set hasn’t a weak cut anywhere. The opener is followed with a killer version of “Stagger Lee,” it struts, sweats and swaggers over to the tough soul-ish cuts like “Just Because,” and “Try a Little Tenderness,” and keeps on going. The Moriscos were the descendants of the Muslim population that converted to Christianity under threat of exile from Ferdinand and Isabella in 1502. From 1609 through 1614, the Spanish government systematically forced Moriscos to leave the kingdom for Muslim North Africa. They were only allowed to keep what money and possessions they could carry; the rest, including their property, was impounded. The expulsion especially affected the former Kingdom of Valencia and Kingdom of Aragon, harming their economies for generations. Suspicions and tensions between the Moriscos and the Christians had been high for some time. While some Moriscos did hold influence and power, and they had some allies such as the nobility of Valencia and Aragon who depended on them as a cheap labor force, their overall political and economic heft in Spain was low. The Christian population constantly suspected the Moriscos of not being sincere in their Christianity. As the Moriscos had been forced to choose between conversion and exile, many indeed held little loyalty to either the crown or the church. Several revolts broke out, the most notable being the 15681573 revolt against an edict of Phillip II’s banning Arabic, Arabic names, and requiring Moriscos to give up their children to be educated by priests. The group has been through a lot during its lengthy career — unwise fashion choices, changing musical tastes, record label snafus, seeing lesser-talented bands of its genre skyrocket — but the band is still rockin’ and rollin’, as evidenced by its 12th studio album, ?. While most veteran bands from the “glam rock ’80s” decided that a stylistic makeover was in order come the 21st century (cough…M? tley Cr? e), Enuff Z’nuff have stuck to their guns through it all. And ? is no different — power pop that is steeped deeply in Cheap Trick-esque twists and turns, and is also the group’s first record in years to include contributions from all four of its original members. A Boy Named Goo $9.99 Produced by Lou Giordano with his trademark full-bodied, immediately accessible, but never washed-out sound, A Boy Named Goo finally got the band across to a wide audience, and deservedly so. Right from the start, the Goo Goo Dolls sound perfectly on the right track after Superstar Car Wash’s OK but ultimately go-nowhere feeling — “Long Way Down” is another stone-cold classic of wounded romanticism wedded to catchy Cheap Trick-tinged punk-pop, Rzeznik’s singing the not-so-secret weapon. Hearing him on the descending chorus, matching the just sad enough guitar crunch, makes one realize that there’s always hope for full-bodied rock & roll. The eternal Replacements tag now makes less sense than ever — the Goos have their own enjoyable sound, Rzeznik’s a more individual singer than ever, and all three rock out accordingly. Takac similarly has his own sonic improvements, his formerly rasped high register now just a little more controlled but no less affecting, as winners like “Burnin’ Up” and “Somethin’ Bad” easily demonstrate. Rzeznik-sung highlights are equally everywhere — the commercial but never stupid “Naked,” with a great chorus and immediately radio-friendly music, the equally sharp “Only One,” and the mighty fine “Ain’t That Unusual.” There’s no question what the highlight is, though — however untypical of the rest of the album’s mid-range feedback fun, “Name,” with its sweet but sad acoustic arrangement, made perfect sense as the Goos’ long-delayed radio breakthrough. Rzeznik’s empathetic vocal, delivering one of his best lyrics on favored subjects of friendship, loss, and fame, matches unfolky strumming and quiet energy, creating a song that feels like both a farewell to the American Dream and to a long-lost partner.
