Tips To Buy Cheap Books Without Compromises

In today’s world people are looking to save money in as many ways as possible. Most of them are willing to reduce the costs in all aspects including clothing and education. The rising cost of books and tuition has forced many people to look hard so they can find what they want without compromising on their needs. Thankfully, there are cheap books available from certain stores that can save a significant amount of money and bring down overall education costs to a certain extent. However, there are some tips that you need to keep in mind in order to find the books you want at prices that suit your budget. Let us take a quick look at a few of them.

Tip #1: Start early

Students who start scouring for books early end up finding them at really low prices. The cost of the books shoot up around the time the new term begins. Since there is an increased demand of books, retailers sell that at very high prices. You can get cheap books for your school or college when you approach the retailers just after the previous term ends. Since there are hardly any takers for books during this time frame, retailers will be willing to give them away at prices worth a steal just to get rid of the old stock.

Tip #2: Consider online stores

The internet has made it possible to find all that we need right at our fingertips. There are a number of Online Books stores that provide various types of books to people from all over the world. The cost of the books that you purchase at online stores is much lesser than that of the traditional stores since the online ones offer discounts almost with every purchase. Also, unlike in the case of regular books stores, online stores do not have overheads such as rentals or utility bills. This translates into better deals for customers and hence makes it easy to find cheap Books Online. But, ensure you find a reputed online store that sells books to avoid losing your money.

Tip #3: Ask friends

One of the best ways to find cheap books for school and college easily is by asking friends who are a year or more senior to you. Since they will not have any use for the books they used the previous year, they will be more than willing to give it to you at prices that you will not be able to get at any traditional bookstores. Most often than not, the cost of the books you obtain this way will even be lesser than what you will have to pay at certain online stores. However, you need to be very careful while buying cheap books from friends or other seniors. Make sure you sift through the books once to see if all pages are present. There is no use of buying books that have key pages missing since it will affect your learning at school or college.

The Traveler’s Guide to Cheap, Healthy CookingOn a 26-month backpacking journey that took him through Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Germany, Mike Hedley had an epiphany: he was spending too much of his “adventure” money on food. Surely there was a cheaper-and healthier-alternative to the “two-minute” noodles, canned pastas, and other convenience foods he saw fellow travelers resort to. Hedley, a chef, began to develop simple, healthy, inexpensive recipes that even the most inexperienced cook can create on the road. Ingredient lists are short, and no exotic or hard-to-procure items are required. These recipes are designed for the most basic equipment travelers will likely have access to. For example, if you lack measuring spoons, just turn to the conversion chart in the front of the book and you’ll find the equivalents given in pinches, dashes, and handfuls. Recipes such as Darwin Salad, Vegetable Omelet, Barbeque Steak Sandwich, Tuna Burger, Easiest Chili, Smashed Potatoes, and Banana Rice Pudding please kids as well as adult travelers. To keep your palette interested, most recipes offer a few simple variations. For easy selection, recipes in each section are arranged in order of cost and effort involved, from cheapest and easiest to more elaborate and expensive. Mike Hedley is a “Red Seal” certified Canadian chef. He lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Features:Written by Mike Hedley Paperback50 time- and money-saving meals that emphasize good nutrition and appeal to kids and adults alike Recipes require minimal equipment and feature readily available ingredients Includes brief anecdotes on the origin/inspiration for each recipe and the camaraderie of sharing meals with fellow travelers 112 Pages

$20 per Gallon: How the Inevitable Rise in the Price of Gasoline Will Change Our Lives for the Better

$29.98

Imagine an everyday world in which the price of gasoline (and oil) continues to go up, and up, and up. Think about the immediate impact that would have on our lives.Of course, everybody already knows how about gasoline has affected our driving habits. People can’t wait to junk their gas-guzzling SUVs for a new Prius. But there are more, not-so-obvious changes on the horizon that Chris Steiner tracks brilliantly in this provocative work.Consider the following societal changes: people who own homes in far-off suburbs will soon realize that there’s no longer any market for their houses (reason: nobody wants to live too far away because it’s too expensive to commute to work). Telecommuting will begin to expand rapidly. Trains will become the mode of national transportation (as it used to be) as the price of flying becomes prohibitive. Families will begin to migrate southward as the price of heating northern homes in the winter is too pricey. Cheap everyday items that are comprised of plastic will go away because of the rising price to produce them (plastic is derived from oil). And this is just the beginning of a huge and overwhelming domino effect that our way of life will undergo in the years to come.Steiner, an engineer by training before turning to journalism, sees how this simple but constant rise in oil and gas prices will totally re-structure our lifestyle. But what may be surprising to readers is that all of these changes may not be negative – but actually will usher in some new and very promising aspects of our society. Steiner will probe how the liberation of technology and innovation, triggered by climbing gas prices, will change our lives. The book may start as an alarmist’s exercise…. but don’t be misled. The future will be exhilarating.

10 Moons And 13 Horses: Poems

10 Moons And 13 Horses: Poems

$14

Gary Short’s new collection is the work of a mature poet at the peak of his powers, confident of his ability to speak of human betrayal and the fragility of life without bitterness or cheap sentiment, to find poignancy in loss and exaltation in the outwardly mundane. His voice is lyrical, tough, and capable of touching us profoundly. Short knows Nevada’s austere landscape, its ephemeral beauty, and its stoic people as few writers in any genre do. He also understands the complexities of the human soul and the contradictions of love. So he tells of how his mother, dying of cancer, revisits a day thirty years in the past when her sons trapped a trout and kept it in their father’s horse trough and how now, in her mind’s eye, she carries the boxed-in fish to the stream to release it, “a moment/of having, not loss.” And of how the feathers of a dead owl in a long-dead oak tree have blown loose, “caught and leafed out/from each taloned twig and limb . . . each feather/a separate flight, shining to live.”

Gary Short’s new collection is the work of a mature poet at the peak of his powers, confident of his ability to move us without histrionics, to speak of human betrayal and the fragility of all life without bitterness or cheap sentiment, to find poignancy and beauty in loss and exaltation in the outwardly mundane. His voice is lyrical, tough, honest, and capable of touching us profoundly. Short knows Nevada’s austere and daunting landscape, its ephemeral beauty, and its stoic people as few writers in any genre do. He also understands the complexities of the human soul and the contradictions of love. So he tells of how his mother, dying of cancer after a life marked by cruelty and disappointment, revisits a day thirty years in the past when her sons trapped a trout and kept it in their father’s horse trough and how now, in her mind’s eye, she carries the boxed-in fish to the stream to release it, a moment/of having, not loss. And of how the feathers of a dead owl in a long-dead oak tree have blown loose, caught and leafed out/from each taloned twig and limb…each feather/a separate flight, shining to live. This is rich and wondrous poetry, eminently readable, deeply moving, unforgettable.

10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You

$14.99

One of the best modern rock soundtracks of the spring 1999 season is filled with great tracks by hip new artists, and some unexpected covers. The story of two sisters trying to get a date for the high school prom, 10 Things I Hate About You is an updated version of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The sisters’ father is way too overprotective and won’t let the younger sibling date unless the eldest gets a date first. Featuring teen stars such as Larisa Oleynik, Julia Stiles, Andrew Keegan, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the movie was pretty good and was considered a box office success. Letters to Cleo is featured in the movie and on this soundtrack collection as one of the character’s favorite bands. They do a great job covering Cheap Trick’s 1979 hit “I Want You to Want Me” and Nick Lowe’s “Cruel to Be Kind,” keying off of the original artist’s style and throwing in a little bit of their own. Other tracks featured in the film include Semisonic’s “FNT,” Save Ferris’ “I Know,” Sister Hazel’s “Your Winter,” Jessica Riddle’s “Even Angels Fall,” Leroy’s “New World,” Ta-Gana’s “Saturday Night,” Brick’s “Dazz,” Joan Armatrading’s “The Weakness in Me,” the Cardigans’ “War,” and Madness’ “Wings of a Dove.” As good as they are, the best track is George Clinton’s immortal “Atomic Dog,” heard during one of the film’s funniest scenes. A ’70s funk-lovin’ lead character, stopped at a red light, wins a car-stereo volume duel with a carload of ’90s Valley girls blasting Barenaked Ladies’ “One Week” in the next lane. The album closes with the instrumental theme “One More Thing,” composed by Richard Gibbs in a pop-classical style; it does a nice job working the same groove as the rest of the soundtrack. ~ S. Peeples, Rovi

 100 Years of Motorcycles

100 Years of Motorcycles

$12.44

A visual history of two-wheeled motorized transport: the motorcycle. Contains around 300 photographs from PA Photos’ huge archives, spanning the whole of the 20th Century. The story of the motorcycle starts when it was little more than a bicycle frame with an engine strapped on, soon becoming a purpose designed vehicle for cheap every-day transport, navigating congested urban traffic, for long distance travel, cruising and holidays. Some machines became test-beds for mechanical refinement and thrilled spectators at race circuits and off road tracks throughout the world. From the temperamental vintage machines of the early 1900s, to the motorcycling subcultures of the 1940s Hells Angels, the 1950s Cafe Racers, and the Mods and Rockers of the 1960s, all aspects of the motorcycle are celebrated.

Emerging from the searing pain, Aron found himself completely stuck. No one knew where he was; no one was coming to rescue him. With scant water and food, and a cheap pocketknife his only tool, he eliminated his options one by one. On the fifth night, wracked by delirium and uncontrollable shivers, Aron scratched his epitaph into the rock wall, certain he would not see daylight. Yet with the new morning came an epiphany: if he could use the rock’’s vise-like hold to break his arm bones, his blunted pocketknife could serve as a surgeon’’s blade. . . .

James Franco stars in director Danny Boyle’s inspiring survival drama based on the incredible true story of Aron Ralston, who became trapped alone in a Utah canyon for days after slipping on a loose rock, and resorted to extraordinary measures in order to make it out of his dire predicament alive. An experienced hiker and climber, Ralston (Franco) is very much in his element when he parks his truck by a mountain near Moab, UT, hops on his bike, and peddles to the middle of nowhere. Later, when Ralston encounters a pair of young female hikers who have gotten lost while searching for a local landmark, he jovially shows them a sight that most casual hikers miss before bidding them farewell and continuing on his way. Drifting through the canyons alone, deep in thought, however, the explorer who presumed he was ready for anything quickly discovers just how fast things can spin out of control when a rock gives way as he shimmies down a crevice, and pins his hand to the unforgiving wall of stone. Over the course of the next 127 hours, Ralston tries everything he can think of to free himself, flashing back to small but memorable events in his life — as well as forward to the future that he might enjoy should he manage to wiggle free — as his body begins the slow process of shutting down. Eventually realizing that the only way out is to leave part of himself behind, the exhausted, delirious adventurer draws his cheap made-in-China multi-tool, and does what it takes to survive. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

 16 Biggest Hits

16 Biggest Hits

$9.99

Like the many other 16 Biggest Hits compilations released by Legacy, Clint Black’s entry in the budget-line series is an inexpensive and even-handed collection of his bigger hits, sequenced chronologically. The time range featured here spans from Black’s blockbuster debut album, Killin’ Time (1989), to his final release for RCA, D’lectrified (1999). A pair of Greatest Hits volumes already covered this time span, granted, and those volumes indeed served their purpose well, but it’s nice to have a cheap, single-disc option like 16 Biggest Hits. There’s one potential problem with this particular compilation, however, and it’s the even-handed approach: while it’s nice to have some of Black’s mid- to late-’90s hits featured, his late-’80s and early-’90s recordings are generally considered to be superior, with his first three albums in particular standing head and shoulders above his later releases. Those first three albums — Killin’ Time, Put Yourself in My Shoes (1990), and The Hard Way (1992) — are covered by only the first seven songs here on 16 Biggest Hits, and it’s hard not to wish there were more inclusions from those albums. After all, Killin’ Time alone spawned five Top Three hits. This potential grievance aside, the even-handedness of 16 Biggest Hits at least paints an accurate picture of how Black’s music lost some of its edge over the years as his star steadily faded, even if he continued to score number one hits like “Summer’s Comin’,” “Like the Rain,” “Nothin’ but the Taillights,” “The Shoes You’re Wearing,” and “When I Said I Do” — all of which are included here. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

 16 Greatest Hits

16 Greatest Hits

$7.99

This 16 Greatest Hits series from Passport Audio is, for the price, tough to beat. This volume by Lloyd Price is a case in point. It begins with “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” just to get things rolling. While it’s typical of budget comps to begin with the big hit, they usually conk after three or four cuts — and they usually clock in at ten or 12 cuts max — half of which are from the dead dogs files. This set hasn’t a weak cut anywhere. The opener is followed with a killer version of “Stagger Lee,” it struts, sweats and swaggers over to the tough soul-ish cuts like “Just Because,” and “Try a Little Tenderness,” and keeps on going. This is a fine and cheap introduction to the genius of Lloyd Price. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Excerpt: On April 9, 1609, King Philip III of Spain decreed the expulsion of the Moriscos. The Moriscos were the descendants of the Muslim population that converted to Christianity under threat of exile from Ferdinand and Isabella in 1502. From 1609 through 1614, the Spanish government systematically forced Moriscos to leave the kingdom for Muslim North Africa. They were only allowed to keep what money and possessions they could carry; the rest, including their property, was impounded. The expulsion especially affected the former Kingdom of Valencia and Kingdom of Aragon, harming their economies for generations. Suspicions and tensions between the Moriscos and the Christians had been high for some time. While some Moriscos did hold influence and power, and they had some allies such as the nobility of Valencia and Aragon who depended on them as a cheap labor force, their overall political and economic heft in Spain was low. The Christian population constantly suspected the Moriscos of not being sincere in their Christianity. As the Moriscos had been forced to choose between conversion and exile, many indeed held little loyalty to either the crown or the church. Several revolts broke out, the most notable being the 15681573 revolt against an edict of Phillip II’s banning Arabic, Arabic names, and requiring Moriscos to give up their children to be educated by priests. After the suppression of the revolt, Philip ordered the dispersal of the Moriscos of Granada to other areas. Philip expected that this would break down the Morisco community and facilitate their assimilation into the Christian population. This may have happened to a degree to Granada’s Moriscos, but not in Valencia or Aragon, where genuine crypto-Muslim enclaves still existed. At around t… More:

More than a cheap article of clothing, the T-shirt is a portable personal ad, its wearing declaring their political/musical/social affiliations for all the world to see. Since the 1960s the T-shirt has provided a forum for expression, where anti-war slogans mixed with early counter-culture classics such as Keep on Truckin”, and tie-dye mingled with the debut of that hardy perennial, the tour T-shirt: album cover graphic on the front, venue details listed on the back. This book reflects the diverse and rich graphic culture that has arisen from the medium, considering its use in areas such as music, politics and fashion. Featuring photographs of T-shirts worn on the street, specially commissioned T-shirt graphics, T-shirt collections, and the best and coolest graphics from around the world, 300% Cotton will appeal to designers, illustrators and art directors, as well as a general market of T-shirt enthusiasts and collectors.

419 Scam: Exploits of the Nigerian Con Man

419 Scam: Exploits of the Nigerian Con Man

$14.95

The “419″ scam is an aspect of transnational financial crime with a ‘modus operandi’ peculiar to the Nigerian swindler. The most recurrent type of transnational “419″ scam is the “advance fee fraud”. It is usually introduced in the form of a business contract, a transfer of stolen money or money from over-invoiced contract, the purchase of crude oil from Nigeria at a relatively cheap rate, and transfer of money left by a deceased person (will scam). In all situations, the victim is eventually lured into an endless period of advance fee payment. The “black money” scam is almost as popular as the advance fee fraud and is sometimes, practiced in continuation of advance fee scam. The victim is introduced to a large sum of money that needs to be cleaned by a special liquid solution. The victim parts with money upon the supposition that the black money would be cleaned and given to him. The con man gets away with the victim’s money leaving him with a bunch of worthless papers. The 419 Scam business is not restricted to defrauding foreigners. There are two groups of con men in Nigeria: The local and the International “419ners”. The local groups specialize in defrauding Nigerians while the more advanced International syndicates fish out victims from Europe, America, Asia and South Africa. The local ones eventually grow to international status after they have made enough money to acquire computers, facsimile and telephone lines and other gadgets necessary for the scam business.”Tive’s insight of the perpetrators behind the advance fee fraud coupled with his knowledge on the topic show that he is a true authority on the subject.”-Ralph A. Gonzales, SpecialAgent-in-Charge, United States Secret Service”This book by Charles Tive is an excellent portrayal of the 419 scam, its operators, and its basic operations.”-Gary M. Gibson, Regional Security Officer, U.S. Consulate Lagos.” . . . is a scholarly but readable summary of the

45 RPM: The History, Heroes & Villains of a Pop Music Revolution

45 RPM: The History, Heroes & Villains of a Pop Music Revolution

$19.95

In the 1950s and ’60s, those shiny 45-rpm records with the big hole in the middle were the primary delivery system for popular American music, especially rock ‘n’ roll. Cheap to manufacture and available to even fly-by-night record operations, the “donut disc” changed the way popular music was written, recorded, promoted and marketed, and it broke – at least for a time – the iron-fisted dominance of the major record corporations. This book traces the 7-inch single’s origins back to the 1880s, and explains the personality conflicts that led an eccentric genius to develop the 45 into one of postwar America’s most popular consumer products. It explores how the jukebox, the autonomous disc jockey, and payola and artist rip-offs kept the 45 at the forefront of rock for 20 years. There are also chapters on the most valuable (and legendary) 45s of all time, as well as the oddities, oddballs and freak hits that make listening to 45s so much fun. With over 80 illustrations – many in full color.

 4everevolution

4everevolution

$15.98

Now aged 39, South London rapper Roots Manuva may well be the elder statesman of British hip-hop, but his eighth studio album, 4everevolution, shows he can still summarize the state of the nation more succinctly in one line that most MCs half his age manage over the course of an entire album. “Cost of life so cheap round here/but the cost of living ain’t cheap round here,” he cleverly delivers in his distinctive, sleepy Cockney drawl on the cinematic “Skid Valley,” a diatribe against the government featuring dramatic, James Bond theme-style strings and impassioned soulful vocals courtesy of Skunk Anansie’s Skin. It’s just one example of the effortless, lyrical wordplay and socio-political messages on offer throughout its eclectic 17 tracks, which embrace a whole host of urban sounds, from wobbling the dubstep on “Here We Go Again,” a cautionary tale of a friend who’s taken the wrong path in life, to the twitchy grime of “Revelation” to the woozy, East Coast hip-hop beats and skank guitars of “Who Goes There?” Indeed, Manuva’s trademark swagger and acerbic wit are still very much in full flow, but this is by far his most versatile record to date. For every seven-minute slice of challenging, ambient electro-clash, (“The Throes of It”), there is a Radio 1-friendly attempt at soulful, 2-step garage (“Beyond This World”), and for every song which evokes the late-night, inner-city streets of London (“Takes Time”), there is a sunshine-fueled ditty more suited to the beaches of the Caribbean (“Wha’ Mek?”). It’s an approach which could finally reap the rewards that have so far eluded his critically acclaimed but commercially ignored career, and although the likes of the Basement Jaxx-esque ragga of “Go Champ” and the disco-tinged collaboration with Toddla T (“Watch Me Dance”) are potential club anthems, this is no Dizzee Rascal-esque mainstream make-over. Instead, 4everevolution is an appropriately titled, subtle progression which proves that intelli…

Remember the old Timex watch slogan, “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking”? Well, the same could be said about Enuff Z’nuff. The group has been through a lot during its lengthy career — unwise fashion choices, changing musical tastes, record label snafus, seeing lesser-talented bands of its genre skyrocket — but the band is still rockin’ and rollin’, as evidenced by its 12th studio album, ?. While most veteran bands from the “glam rock ’80s” decided that a stylistic makeover was in order come the 21st century (cough…M? tley Cr? e), Enuff Z’nuff have stuck to their guns through it all. And ? is no different — power pop that is steeped deeply in Cheap Trick-esque twists and turns, and is also the group’s first record in years to include contributions from all four of its original members. If you make it past the purposely (one assumes) hard to take interlude of “Gorgeous,” you’ll find a fine pop gem — which sees Chip Znuff assume vocal duties, as well as such other similarly styled highlights as “Home Tonight” and “Harleya,” plus a fun album-closing cover of the Queen classic “Stone Cold Crazy.” The only downer regarding this solid set is that it will mark the last time guitarist Derek Frigo will appear on a new Enuff Z’nuff recording, as he passed away shortly before its release. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

 A Boy Named Goo

A Boy Named Goo

$9.99

Produced by Lou Giordano with his trademark full-bodied, immediately accessible, but never washed-out sound, A Boy Named Goo finally got the band across to a wide audience, and deservedly so. Right from the start, the Goo Goo Dolls sound perfectly on the right track after Superstar Car Wash’s OK but ultimately go-nowhere feeling — “Long Way Down” is another stone-cold classic of wounded romanticism wedded to catchy Cheap Trick-tinged punk-pop, Rzeznik’s singing the not-so-secret weapon. Hearing him on the descending chorus, matching the just sad enough guitar crunch, makes one realize that there’s always hope for full-bodied rock & roll. The eternal Replacements tag now makes less sense than ever — the Goos have their own enjoyable sound, Rzeznik’s a more individual singer than ever, and all three rock out accordingly. Takac similarly has his own sonic improvements, his formerly rasped high register now just a little more controlled but no less affecting, as winners like “Burnin’ Up” and “Somethin’ Bad” easily demonstrate. Rzeznik-sung highlights are equally everywhere — the commercial but never stupid “Naked,” with a great chorus and immediately radio-friendly music, the equally sharp “Only One,” and the mighty fine “Ain’t That Unusual.” There’s no question what the highlight is, though — however untypical of the rest of the album’s mid-range feedback fun, “Name,” with its sweet but sad acoustic arrangement, made perfect sense as the Goos’ long-delayed radio breakthrough. Rzeznik’s empathetic vocal, delivering one of his best lyrics on favored subjects of friendship, loss, and fame, matches unfolky strumming and quiet energy, creating a song that feels like both a farewell to the American Dream and to a long-lost partner. All this without sounding a Bruce Springsteen sermon — a rare thing indeed. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi
