The upper class and the lower class & where you fit in.

If I told you that it took me almost ten years to finish my book you’d probably ask me why it took me so long. Good question; well to answer your question, to me writing is not about how many books you can churn out in a year, it’s about the quality of a book and how it relates to your audience, i.e. have they been through similar experiences etc, and I only write when I’ve got something to say. It’s far better to write something that flows like a piano virtuoso like Chopa, than to try and give it all the Bill Haley and sound like something that you accidentally trod on as you stagger out of a pub on a Friday night.

Being a fiction writer, some may argue how can you make humour out of factual situations; well, to answer your question, we need humour to realize how to cheer each other up and also this helps when showing your character. It’s quite the opposite of being hatchet faced all the time… now that would be depressing, and do we want to be depressed? No.

Do you ever wonder why at a tender age of nine you might find your self subjected to watching something like the “Werewolf” on TV? Precisely, its there to one scare the hell out of you, but ironically also to give you humour in the sense that you might turn around to your brother or sister or friend and laugh and say to them that that F….ing”Werewolf” scared the Sh….t out me last night man.

To reiterate, this is what I mean about humour, it can make you laugh at the most shocking things. There seems to be a bit of a snobbery going on between the traditional literary writers and the modern day literary writers, in the sense that you can use an analogy of the difference between the upper class and the lower class are so far apart you will need the earth magnetic field to bring them closer together. On the other hand the upper class might argue that it was all going along splendidly between us and the lower class because they knew their place, until the retched middle class was formed and spoilt everything…….

We need diversity, or else how do we differentiate between what is being dictated to us and what we have a democratic right too. There is no point in sticking your head in the sand, we need to wake up to reality and realize that the world is forever changing. There are writer which come from different walks of life, some may want to base their books on factual stuff others on fictional stuff, and although their writing may not conform to a specific group of people, nevertheless, there will be an audience which will like an unconventional type of writing, and we should be aware of that.

So whether you’re looking for scenes ranging from big time drug dealers wanting to get their revenge back on a gang of small time crooks who attempts to make an easy buck by doing a dirty on the dealer, to the jealous lover who’s a bit of a psycho; who thinks that his girl friend is cheating on him, to real drama and mayhem when a panther is on the loose in the countryside village, and terrorizes the hell out of the locals, you’re going to want something that is going grip your attention, and not have you falling asleep…

Sourland: Stories

Sourland: Stories

$4.99

Joyce Carol Oates is not only one of our most important novelists and literary critics, she is also an unparalleled master of the short story. Sourland – sixteen previously uncollected stories that explore how the power of violence, loss, and grief shape both the psyche and the soul – shows us an author working at the height of her powers. With lapidary precision and an unflinching eye, Oates maps the surprising contours of “ordinary” life. From a desperate man who dons a jack-o’-lantern head as a prelude to a most curious sort of courtship, to a “story of a stabbing” many times recounted in the life of a lonely girl; from a beguiling young woman librarian whose amputee state attracts a married man and father, to a girl hopelessly in love with her renegade, incarcerated cousin; from a professor’s wife who finds herself tragically isolated at a party in her own house, to the concluding title story of an unexpectedly redemptive love rooted in radical aloneness and isolation, each story in Sourland resonates beautifully with Oates’s trademark fascination for the unpredictable amid the prosaic – the commingling of sexual love and violence, the tumult of family life – and shines with her predilection for dark humor and her gift for voice.

“An understanding of Bible story is essential to so much of our culture, literature, history, language … Bible references are woven into the fabric of our national, artistic and literary heritage. The tabloids talk of a ‘David and Goliath encounter’ on the football pitch, a ‘Damascus Road experience’, a ‘lions’ den’ situation or an ‘exodus’ of skilled workers. People talk of the need for ‘the wisdom of Solomon’ or their longing for ‘the return of the prodigal’. But increasing Bible illiteracy means we are losing real understanding of such terms.THE MUST KNOW STORIES are a way of restoring understanding of the importance of 10 key stories in the Bible – 10 stories that have been voted on as essential to our culture and which teachers and parents feel must not be lost to the next generation. The 10 stories voted (by parents and teachers) as THE MUST KNOW STORIES are: 1Creation/ Adam and Eve2 Noah’s ark3The 10 Commandments4David and Goliath5Daniel in the lions’ den6 The birth of Jesus7 The feeding of the 50008The return of the prodigal son9The good Samaritan10The death and resurrection of Jesus”

It currently airs on Mondays at 8:30pm on Network Ten. Hosted by former Doug Anthony All Stars member Paul McDermott, the show has a similar format to the British show Have I Got News For You. Comedians Mikey Robins and Claire Hooper captain two opposing teams consisting of four other guest panellists, engaging in comedic games in which they are required to answer questions about the news stories of the week to score points. The name of the show is derived from the song “It’s Good News Week” by Hedgehoppers Anonymous, which is also used as the show’s theme music. The show aired first on ABC TV before it was bought by Network Ten in 1999. The show has spawned two short-lived spin-off series, the ABC’s Good News Weekend (1998) and Ten’s GNW Night Lite (1999). On 17 January 2008, it was announced that the programme would be renewed for a new run on Network Ten and Ten HD starting with a sixth season after the 20072008 Writers Guild of America strike caused many of Ten’s imported US programmes to cease production. A Boys Workbook of Life: Real Life Stories and Other Stuff For Boys, 10 to 16 years old and Their Guardians

A Boys Workbook of Life: Real Life Stories and Other Stuff For Boys, 10 to 16 years old and Their Guardians

$14.5

This workbook is a collection of short stories and word games designed to create a bond between a male child and the guardian in his life. The boy will be more receptive to his guardian’s opinions and ideas because there will be an exchange, not just someone dictating and him listening. There will be a conversation where he can talk about his feelings and opinions. There is not doubt in my mind that the relationship between the boy and his guardian will be greatly improved by this workbook. His guardian will know him much better and the boy will understand how his guardian expects him to lead his life. This is a unique way to get a boy to express his unique thoughts and opinions, while at the same time he will listen and understand his guardian’s opinions and moral values. This workbook will generate true conversations between young boys and their guardians. They are about situations that happen to boys from a male perspective. These are true stories, some of them happened to the author directly, and some happened to friends or other boys he knew while growing up. Having grown up without a father the author wanted to provide a way to bring up sensitive issues to a young boy. This is for anyone caring for a boy; single mother, father, grandmother, aunt, uncle, older sister, brother, cousin, stepfather or good friend. The situations described in these stories have happened to most every male at some time before he reached the age of 25. This workbook is a way to help prepare young boys, for events that will more than likely happen to him in life. As a father, the author knows how difficult it is to bring up certain issues to a child. You want to protect your son and not expose them to the bad things in life. The truth is, there is no way to keep them away from the unpleasant things in life, and you would only delay the inevitable. They will be exposed to the unspeakable and the only way to help them is to talk about it. If they have had an e

A Day Late and a Dollar Short: High Hopes and Deferred Dreams in Obama's Post-Racial America

A Day Late and a Dollar Short: High Hopes and Deferred Dreams in Obama’s Post-Racial America

$25.95

When Henry Louis Gates spoke out about his ridiculous arrest, he stated a truth few Americans—not even President Obama—are eager to discuss: there is no such thing as a postracial America. When it comes to race, the United States has come a long way, but not far enough and not fast enough. Every day we cope with casual racism, myriad indignities, institutional obstacles, “postracial” nonsense, or worse. The powers that be, meanwhile, always seem to arrive with their apologies and redress a day late and a dollar short. In this book, master storytellers Robert Pierre and Jon Jeter take a closer look at the lives of African-Americans from diverse backgrounds as Obama’s victory comes to play a personal role in each of their lives. Every tale delves into the complex issues we will have to deal with going forward: the many challenges young black men face, subtle persistent racism, the stagnation of blacks vis-à-vis whites, widespread black participation in the military despite widespread anti-war sentiments, the decline of unions even as organized labor becomes the primary vehicle for black progress, the challenges of interracial families, the lack of good schools or healthcare for the poor, and the inability of well-off blacks to lift up others. This honest and engaging exploration of the State of the Black Union is packed with compelling, inspiring, heartbreaking, and hopeful stories from the real lives of black Americans. You’ll meet the Louisiana grandmother who escaped the backbreaking drudgery of a sugar plantation, managed to buy her own modest home, and stayed alive long enough to see a black man elected president; the fiery Chicago union shop steward who fought passionately to save the jobs of more than 260 workers; and the activist who questioned candidate Obama in public, only to have his concerns dismissed. You’ll also meet a successful small business owner who describes her struggles to keep her children from being labeled as

A Declaration of Readers’ Rights: Renewing Our Commitment to Students

$2.49

Declare Your Readers’ Rights!Often school literacy programs fall short of properly supporting preadolescents' and adolescents' literacy development. In A Declaration of Readers' Rights, this dynamic author team presents a research-based “rights” framework that addresses ten key rights for improving literacy development among adolescents.Reviewers Can’t Put This Book Down!“I think this text is one that should be in the library of every reading specialist.”—Heidi Davey, Hoffman Estates High School, IL“I think the topics in this book are timely and provide a wake up call for all reading teachers. We must remember that not all students arrive in school ready to pick up and run with the reading instruction we provide. Good reading instruction coupled with quality reading experiences must be seen as a right and not just a privilege.”—Molly Williams, Still Middle School, ILWhy This Book Will Change the Way You Teach Reading! Discusses the ten readers' rights that all children and adolescents have the right to in the classroom. Challenges teachers to strive to reprioritize their teaching to focus on the students. Provides guidance for how to develop a successful student-teacher relationship to promote a positive classroom environment and student engagement, learning, and achievement in literacy education. Outlines very specific recommendations and implementation strategies for middle and secondary teachers that go far beyond where other books stop. Walks teachers through identifying problems, makes suggestions for preventing reading difficulties, and offers advice for helping students get back on track. Presents voices of students in grades 5-12, as well as the stories, experiences, and challenges of their teachers and parents throughout the book.

French journalist and writer, one of the creators of realism in literature. Balzac’s huge production of novels and short stories are collected under the name La Comédie humaine, which originated from Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Before his breakthrough as an author, Balzac wrote without success several plays and novels under different pseudonyms. Despite prolific output, Balzac lived in debt. “…Well, Balzac was politically a legitimist; his great work is a constant elegy on the irreparable decay of good society; his sympathies are with the class that is doomed to extinction. But for all that, his satire is never keener, his irony never more bitter, than when he sets in motion the very men and women with whom he sympathizes most deeply – the nobles…” (Friedrich Engels in (1888) Honoré de Balzac was born in Tours. His father, Bernard-François Balssa, named his son after St Honoré whose day had just been celebrated. He had risen to the middle class, and married in 1797 the daughter of his Parisian superior, Anne-Charlotte-Laure Sallambier; she was 31 years his junior. The marriage was arranged by her father. Bernard-François had worked as a state prosecutor and Secretary to the King’s Council in Paris. During the French Revolution, he was a member of the Commune, but was transferred to Tours in 1795 because of helping his former royalistic protectors. Bernard-François felt at home in the land of Rabelais, and started energetically to run the local hospital. In 1814 the family moved back to Paris.

Based on historical events shortly after the South’s surrender in the United States Civil War, A Far Piece to Travel follows three Confederate soldiers trying to return to their homes after the cease fire. Traveling from Arkansas to what is now Arizona, the three encounter outlaws, Indians, Mexican bandits, a pernicious villain and even French and Belgian lancers, facing romance, adventure, and challenges. Johnny Reb is part Cherokee and one of his best friends is a full-blooded Cherokee. Facing the prejudice and reality of this era, people from all walks of life band together in times of need and become brothers and sisters in arms, contributing to the multicultural makeup of what is now the state of Arizona. Bud Brown retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Sonar Technician in 1973. He later retired a second time from the Department of Defense as a GS12 Engineering Technician in 1990. He and his spouse have retired and are enjoying their golden years in Tucson, Arizona. Living the golden years is great, but Bud needs more than the good life to be fulfilled. He needs stimulating goals in his life. Writing short stories is his cup of tea, or maybe his sip of wine. Writing stories for his eighteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren helps make his life complete. Now he wants to share his stories with you and yours.
