 13 [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

13 [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

$26.98

If, in their very different ways, the Broadway musical Spring Awakening and the TV movie musical franchise High School Musical treated the subject of teenage concerns, the Broadway musical 13, with music by Jason Robert Brown, goes them one better, moving the focus earlier to the cusp of adolescence; you might call it “Junior High School Musical.” Featuring a cast entirely made up of teenagers, 13 tells the story of Evan Goldman (Graham Phillips), who is turning 13 just as his parents divorce and his mother moves him from the Upper West Side of Manhattan to a small town in Indiana. Evan’s goal is to fit in at Dan Quayle Junior High and get the coolest kids to attend his imminent bar mitzvah, which involves him in the budding romantic interests of those kids as well as the problems of his more natural comrades among the ordinary members of the student body. With a contemporary setting, 13 seems to call for the kind of contemporary teen pop music heard in High School Musical, but Brown’s take on what “contemporary pop” means seems to be ’70s pop/rock, not exactly what you’d expect kids born circa 1995 to be performing. Nevertheless, they do, even extending to creamy soul music in the manner of Philadelphia International Records (“Hey Kendra”) and reggae (“It Can’t Be True”). Brown also provides some traditional Broadway show music (“Terminal Illness”) and ’50s doo wop complete with piano triplets (“Opportunity”). But his basic idea of what 13 year olds in 2008 would be grooving to is catchy rock songs that include screaming (if usually brief) electric guitar solos. The music supports serviceable lyrics that trace the complicated ups and downs of early adolescent social interaction. Happily, those lyrics are sung by an earnest and talented cast whose members sound not far removed from the feelings the lyrics express. Still, 13 on disc comes off as a show that wasn’t really ready for Broadway. (A closing notice went up shortly before this album was releas…

A Holly Jolly Kids Christmas

$10.99

The initial release in the Universal Music Family series, this various-artists collection on Universal’s Hip-O reissue label compiles child-oriented Christmas recordings dating back to the 1940s (Spike Jones’ “All I Want for Christmas [Is My Two Front Teeth]“) and up to 2007 (Raul Malo’s “Marshmallow World”), including some of the biggest all-time Christmas hits, such as Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and the Chipmunks’ “The Chipmunk Song.” That last title was licensed from another record label, as was the ’80s novelty hit “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” by Elmo & Patsy. A range of styles from country-pop to rock & roll and from pop-soul to traditional jazz is represented on this wide-ranging disc, which never strays from the holiday spirit and which should please both parents and children. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

“Fans of the crime caper will rejoice” that Linwood Barclay is back with the hilarious follow-up to his “riotously funny and irreverent” debut, in which paranoid pop Zack Walker plotted to transplant his city-savvy wife and two teenage kids to the tranquillity of the burbs–where planned communities prevail and fathers rest easy. Well, not quite…and now the Walkers have moved home only to find themselves living in the precarious crosshairs of urban sprawl once again, and Zack can’t help but be worried–really worried–that just around the corner lurks the presence of some really bad guys.Zack is back, and much to his family’s relief, the work-at-home science-fiction writer has left the house to take a job as a features writer for the city paper. But now that Zack’s incessant plotting can no longer be hatched from the comforts of his own home, he must be ever more vigilant to outwit the evil at large, whether in the suburbs, the city, or his own imagination. Zack is ready…or so he thinks. While researching his first feature article, Zack stumbles upon a real-life crime scene, but what seems like an ordinary hit-and-run may actually be a homicide linked to a gang that’s been burglarizing Crandall’s high-end shops. Suddenly Zack finds himself at the center of a violent crime wave and destined for a confrontation with Barbie Bullock, an unsettling figure infamous in the crime syndicate for his ruthless business tactics and peculiar proclivity for collecting dolls. And all is not quiet on the home front either. Zack’s protective instincts launch into overdrive when he discovers that his daughter’s rejected suitor has been tracing her every step and may harbor a much more ominous motivation than winning a Saturday night date. Nor does his son’s strange behavior and recent friendship with a creepy computer recluse inspire joy in a father’s heart. As worlds

Big Boned (Heather Wells Series #3)

Big Boned (Heather Wells Series #3)

$13.99

Life is reasonably rosy for plus-size ex-pop star turned Assistant Dormitory Director and sometime sleuth Heather Wells. Her freeloading ex-con dad is finally moving out. She still yearns for her hot landlord, Cooper Cartwright, but her relationship with “rebound beau,” vigorous vegan math professor Tad Tocco, is more than satisfactory. Best of all, nobody has died lately in “Death Dorm,” the aptly nicknamed student residence that Heather assistant-directs. Of course every silver lining ultimately has some black cloud attached. And when the latest murdered corpse to clutter up her jurisdiction turns out to be her exceedingly unlovable boss, Heather finds herself on the shortlist of prime suspects—along with the rabble-rousing boyfriend of her high-strung student assistant and an indecently handsome young campus minister who’s been accused of taking liberties with certain girls’ choir members. Carnavas

Carnavas

$13.98

Carnavas, the debut full-length from L.A.’s Silversun Pickups, is the sort of record that brings something new to discover with each listen. Thus, listen one is as enjoyable as listen five or ten, but probably for entirely different reasons, since unique bits continuously appear from the band’s dream haze of accessibly textured indie rock. From the grainy opening of “Melatonin” that blends into strikingly harmonized male/female vocals, the quartet immediately showcases their innate sense of melody amid textured atmospherics and layers of distortion and fuzz, which all come across as both bittersweet and enchanting. Silversun Pickups take the shimmering dream pop of My Bloody Valentine and filter it through ’90s grunge instincts like that of the Smashing Pumpkins — and it all combines to produce an album that, well, is really freaking good. Vocals are both haunting and sweet, as lead singer Brian Aubert somehow manages to sound like a cross between the Goo Goo Dolls’ Robby Takac and the Get Up Kids’ Matt Pryor — in a good way. And for every moment of ominous intensity, the band further manipulates their ethereal antics into moments of pure shimmering redemption. “Future Foe Scenarios” is urgent in a completely controlled way that makes the vocals come off even fiercer over the song’s driving distortion, while exhilarating and spacious cuts like “Lazy Eye” and “Common Reactor” materialize out of clouds of hazy guitars and pensive keyboard with dynamic force that never loses its direction. Though an extremely rewarding listen, proceed with caution: once put into a stereo, Carnavas may become stuck inside for quite a while. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi

Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of the Crystals

Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of the Crystals

$12.99

When Phil Spector formed his own label, Philles Records, in 1961, he had written, played guitar, and sung backup vocals on 1958? s ? To Know Him Is to Love Him? (which hit the top of the pop charts that year) as part of the Teddy Bears, and worked for a time as part of the production team for Leiber & Stoller, co-writing ? Spanish Harlem? for Ben E. King and playing guitar on the Drifters’ ? On Broadway,? and had produced minor sides for LaVern Baker and Ruth Brown, among others, but there was really little to distinguish him from any number of other hopefuls clustered around the pop music scene at the time. But Spector was driven, single-minded, and stubborn, and he had a sound in his head. Now with his own label in place, he set out to record a series of singles he termed ? little symphonies for the kids? that are now regarded among the most distinctive and influential recordings in the history of pop music. Combining massed pianos, guitars, string arrangements by Jack Nitzsche, tons of layered percussion, and huge washes of echo, working with the West Coast? s best session players (including Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Larry Knechtel, Leon Russell, and Harold Battiste — the so-called Wrecking Crew), and leaning heavily on his engineer Larry Levine to catch all of this in the small confines of Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, Spector developed his ? Wall of Sound? production approach, controlling every aspect of the recordings until, even though he wasn? t singing or even playing an instrument, they became — in essence — Phil Spector records. This is not to diminish the singers he used — the Crystals, in the case here. Already an intact quartet led by vocalists La La Brooks and Barbara Alston when they fell into Spector’s world, he ended up owning the Crystals name and inserting other vocalists — most notably Darlene Love — into the equation whenever it suited him. One can say, that? s the music business, and Spector was far from a huma…

 I Am the Movie

I Am the Movie

$15.98

Midwest rockers Motion City Soundtrack give their best post-grunge impression on their studio debut, I Am the Movie. It’s probably the slickest thing Epitaph has released up to this point and pretty stylish compared to their celebrated punk roster (Bad Religion, Pennywise, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys), but who’s to say that Motion City Soundtrack isn’t worthy of being on such a label? I Am the Movie is layered with rich guitar hooks and small electronic bits are precisely tweaked throughout the 14-song set. The band’s fierce musicianship is solid and frontman/guitarist Justin Pierre’s emo-tinged vocals are charming, and fans of Jimmy Eat World and the like will enjoy that. What’s made Epitaph a staple among the punk community all these years is their ability to single out the pure rock & roll grit, and Motion City Soundtrack doesn’t exactly possess such energy. But don’t write ‘em off just yet. I Am the Movie is ambitious in presentation and pop kids latching onto the new-millennium wave of post-alternative rock will appreciate the band’s whimsical rock sound. Motion City Soundtrack might be aiming for that polished punk-inspired style and obviously they’re eager in effort, so the potential is there. There’s nothing wrong with some shiny punk-pop. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi

Jonny Magic And the Card Shark Kids

$8.38

If you think a gang of real-life geeks can’t take on the world and win big . . . think again. And whatever you do, don’t sit down across a gaming table from Jon Finkel, better known as Jonny Magic. Jonny Magic and the Card Shark Kids is his amazing true story: the jaw-dropping, zero-to-hero chronicle of a fat, friendless boy from New Jersey who found his edge in a game of cards-and turned it into a fortune. The ultimate bully-magnet, Finkel grew up heckled and hazed until destiny came in the form of a trading-card game called Magic: The Gathering. Magic exploded from nerdy obsession to mainstream mania and made the teenage Finkel an ultracool world champion. Once transformed, this young shark stormed poker rooms from the underground clubs of New York City to the high-stakes tables online, until he landed on the largest card-counting blackjack team in the country. Taking Vegas for millions, Finkel’s squad of brainy gamers became the biggest players in town. Then they took on the town’s biggest game, the World Series of Poker, and walked away with more than $3.5 million. Thrilling, edgy, and ferociously feel-good, the odyssey of these underdogs-turned-overlords is the stuff of pop-culture legend. And David Kushner, acclaimed author of Masters of Doom, masterfully deals out the outrageous details while bringing to life a cast of characters rife with aces, kings, knaves . . . and more than a few jokers. If you secretly believe every player has his day, you’re right. Here’s the proof. From the Hardcover edition.

 Locksley

Locksley

$10.98

Back in the febrile ’60s, there was an excretory musical act called We the People, a group of fresh-faced, well-groomed young people serving up bland, unchallenging pop as a counter-weight to all that raucous rock and revolution that kids were slurping up by the bucketful. Locksley appear to be their subversive offspring. Across their self-released debut album, Don’t Make Me Wait, the quintet offer up flawlessly bright and breezy pop numbers, perfect for the tween crowd, a sort-of scream-inducing Beatles circa 1964 for a new generation. In fact, “All of the Time” would have slotted neatly onto the Meet the Beatles! album with its light touches of R&B, lovely bass solo, and heart- fluttering harmonies. “My Kind of Lover” is similarly Fab Four-ish down to its ringing guitars, semi-shouted chorus, and a few “yeahs” thrown in for good measure. But “Let Me Know” takes the Liverpudlians into new territory, giving their sound a surprising punky edge. The Small Faces were punk before the term was even invented, and Locksley’s exuberant “She Does” is the best song Steve Marriott never wrote or performed. Back in the day, detractors called the Faces a Rolling Stones knock-off, and that latter band’s influence can be heard all over “All Over Again.” But nobody could hurl that accusation at the Kinks, least of all Locksley, who pay tribute to that group on “Up the Stairs.” In the ’70s, for all their dinosaur slaying, the punks were still beholden to the bands of their youth, and that includes the Cure who owed their own slight debt to the Beatles, and on “The Past and the Present” Locksley repays it for them by exquisitely combining the styles of both groups. Years on, and the styles may have changed, but even modern sounding bands continue to dredge up the past, as “It Won’t Be for Long” shows. And so Locksley brings the set surreptitiously full circle, from the past straight into the present. Today, ’60s pop is covered in a sheen of innocence, back then i…

 McCartney

McCartney

$0.01

Between 1963 and 1970, Paul McCartney sold 160 million albums throughout the world; co-authored with John Lennon twenty-five US and UK number one singles; recorded the first rock album with Rubber Soul and established the concept of rock-as-art with Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. As a member of the most important rock band ever, Paul McCartney compelled millions of kids to pick up electric guitars and others to burn vinyl. He helped usher in the Swinging Sixties, the Love Generation, rock n’ roll’s studio era, and left the world dumbfounded when the Fab Four called it quits in the early 70s. However, to this day McCartney remains one of the world’s most beloved and respected musicians.McCartney is a tale of self-destruction and epic excess as well as creative genius and brilliant music. The Beatles’ bloody in-fighting, the sex, the drugs, and McCartney’s extraordinary marriages are revealed here in full. Yet, while the revelations will genuinely astound, this book remains a celebratory feast for millions of fans, capturing the glorious rush of the best songs and revealing the untold stories behind them. McCartney is the definitive biography, charting not only the pop legend, but the man and his era.

 Midnite Dynamite

Midnite Dynamite

$13.96

By 1985, pop-metal had become one of the dominate genres in pop music thanks to the success of groups like Quiet Riot and Ratt. Although Kix’s material remained more ambitious than the pop-metal groups they were lumped in with, the group went for a more pop-metal sound on Midnight Dynamite by using Beau Hill (best known for his work with Ratt and Warrant) as their producer. As a result, songs like the title track and “Layin’ Rubber” have the slick, conventional sound expected of pop-metal recordings but manage to rise above the genre’s trend with surprising hooks like the unexpectedly lovely harmonies that build up to the chorus in “Midnight Dynamite” and the bubblegum chants that are woven in “Layin’ Rubber.” The hooks in the songs don’t leap out of the speakers this time out the way they did on Kix or Cool Kids, but the group makes up for this by testing out all sorts of new sounds and genres: “Walkin’ Away” is a plaintive ballad that is built on synthesizers instead of guitars, and the surprisingly funky “Cold Shower” flirts with rap in its vocal melody. Meanwhile, songs like “Red Hot (Black and Blue)” and “Lie Like a Rug” keep up the album’s hard rock quotient and balance their solid guitar riffs with enough pop harmonies and hooks to keep things interesting. Ultimately, Midnight Dynamite lacks the coherence and sonic ambition that marked their first two albums but still remains a strong, likeable collection of pop/rock tunes. ~ Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi

 Miike Snow

Miike Snow

$19.98

To get the formalities out of the way, Miike Snow is not a singer/songwriter named Mike. Miike Snow isn’t even a he, actually. It’s an indie-electro pop trio, made up of singer Andrew Wyatt of Fires of Rome and Swedish (hence the double “i” in the name) mega producers Chris Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, otherwise known as Bloodshy & Avant. Those familiar with Bloodshy & Avant’s track record — working with Britney Spears, Madonna, and Kylie Minogue — will know that they’re capable of making top-notch pop gloss geared for the dancefloor. But the question here is, “can they create music that isn’t designed for club-goers and teeny boppers?” With their self-titled release, they do make light, inoffensive pop with twinkling synths and unshakable choruses, but it’s a pretty substantial shift in style from their past gigs. Consistent throughout, the album’s more suited for a coffee shop or a Sunday morning drive than a night out with the girls, with its fill of slick mid-tempo beats and Swedish twee glee. Starting with a hook that doesn’t sound too far off from a Vampire Weekend cut (not a surprising reference point, since Miike Snow’s repertoire of remixes includes a version of “The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance”), dubby synths circulate around flighty vocals with heavy sentiments: “I change shapes just to hide in this place, but I’m still, I’m still an animal.” Slight of hand seems to be one of the group’s best tricks, as they take lyrics with moody undertones to unexpectedly joyous heights. When the second track, “Burial” — a slice of pop that’s as instantly accessible as the first — starts with the line, “Misery is all we know lately,” the music box keyboards never hint at anything but a sweet little ditty. Production tricks are used just enough to keep the sound fresh as Karlsson and Winnberg rifle through their folders of synth sounds and plug-ins, all the while adding arpeggiated bleeps, Moog pads, and the occasional octave effect to enhance vocal par…

 Millennials Rising

Millennials Rising

$17.95

The authors of the bestselling 13th Gen present the first in-depth examination of the Millennials–the generation born after 1982. They explain why today’s teens are smart, well-behaved, and optimistic, and why you won’t hear older people say that. Charts, graphs, & cartoons. From the Publisher Diligent…dedicated…energetic…spirited…optimistic . These are the words that first pop out when McLean, Virginia high school sophomores are invited to describe their generation. Ask a class of Nashville, Tennessee middle schoolers if they think they’ll do better than their parents, and every hand goes up. This is the reality behind the new generation of kids that is currently known mostly for the tragedy at Columbine — the generation whose first wave will graduate high school in 2000. Neil Howe and Bill Strauss, the authors of numerous books on generations including 13th Gen, have talked to members of this generation, talked to their teachers and their parents. They’ve looked at the statistics and what they have come up with is shocking and completely unexpected. Children are rebelling by being better, not worse. Indeed their performance would indicate that by most normal earmarks — respect for elders, seriousness of purpose, academic pursuits — these kids will be better than any seen in a long time, and they just might turn out to be the next American heroes. Howe and Strauss discuss who they are and how they relate to their families, schools, ethnic diversity, sex, drugs, pop culture, the marketplace, the workplace, technology, politics, and the world around them. They also look at the history of generations in order to come up with some predictions about where they are heading and who they will become. Howe and Strauss have compiled the first book to examine this new generation and they have used their expertise to create a fascinating and compelling portrait of a generation that is certain to make its presence felt.

Raised by Wolves: The Turbulent Art and Times of Quentin Tarantino

Raised by Wolves: The Turbulent Art and Times of Quentin Tarantino

$14.95

When Quentin Tarantino was eight years old, and all the regular kids were lining up to see the latest from Disney, Tarantino’s mother took him to see Carnal Knowledge. Sound about right?A high-school dropout who never attended film school, Tarantino got all the education he needed while working the register at Los Angeles’s fabled Video Archives. His enthusiasms — for pop culture (foreign and domestic), eye-popping aesthetics, and genre films — would become notorious and infectious. The outrageous success of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction essentially killed off Tarantino the man, and gave birth to Tarantino the myth. Here, from legendary novelist and historian Jerome Charyn, is a portrait of both the man AND the myth — and the mind behind them both. More than a biography, more than a critical study, Raised by Wolves is a feisty and astute reckoning with Tarantino en toto.

Rejuvenile: Kickball, Cartoons, Cupcakes, and the Reinvention of the American Grown-up

Rejuvenile: Kickball, Cartoons, Cupcakes, and the Reinvention of the American Grown-up

$3.47

Once upon a time, boys and girls grew up and set aside childish things. Nowadays, moms and dads skateboard alongside their kids and download the latest pop-song ringtones. Captains of industry pose for the cover of BusinessWeek holding Super Soakers. The average age of video game players is twenty-nine and rising. Top chefs develop recipes for Easy-Bake Ovens. Disney World is the world’s top adult vacation destination (that’s adults without kids). And young people delay marriage and childbirth longer than ever in part to keep family obligations from interfering with their fun fun fun.Christopher Noxon has coined a word for this new breed of grown-up: rejuveniles. And as a self-confessed rejuvenile, he’s a sympathetic yet critical guide to this bright and shiny world of people who see growing up as “winding down”—exchanging a life of playful flexibility for anxious days tending lawns and mutual funds. In Rejuvenile, Noxon explores the historical roots of today’s rejuveniles (hint: all roads lead to Peter Pan), the “toyification” of practical devices (car cuteness is at an all-time high), and the new gospel of play. He talks to parents who love cartoons more than their children do, twenty-somethings who live happily with their parents, and grown-ups who evangelize on behalf of all-ages tag and Legos. And he takes on the “Harrumphing Codgers,” who see the rejuvenile as a threat to the social order. Noxon tempers stories of his and others’ rejuvenile tendencies with cautionary notes about “lost souls whose taste for childish things is creepy at best.” (Exhibit A: Michael Jackson.) On balance, though, he sees rejuveniles as optimists and capital-R Romantics, people driven by a desire “to hold on to the part of ourselves that feels the most genuinely human. We believe in play, in make believe, in learning, in naps. And in a time of deep

 Rock Steady

Rock Steady

$14.99

Five years separated Tragic Kingdom and its 2000 follow-up, Return of Saturn. About 15 months separated Saturn and its sequel, Rock Steady — a clear sign that No Doubt was getting back to business, but it’s really a more accurate reflection of Gwen Stefani’s stature in 2001. Once Saturn started slipping down the charts — apparently, the kids weren’t ready to hear a post-new wave album about facing your thirties with your biological clock ticking — Stefani started popping up all over the place, appearing on Moby’s remix of “South Side” and duetting with Eve on “Let Me Blow Your Mind.” These were major, major hits, restoring luster to Gwen Stefani, and therefore, No Doubt, while giving them some hip-hop/dance credibility (albeit rather small cred), so it was time to turn out another record to capitalize on this re-opened window. Smartly, they followed a Madonna blueprint by working with several producers — Nellee Hooper, Sly & Robbie, Ric Ocasek, Prince, Steely & Clevie — and running it through Mark “Spike” Stent for mixing and additional production, thereby giving it a unified sound while covering all the bases. And they certainly cover all their bases, retaining their footing in new wave and ska revival while ratcheting up their fondness for reggae (specifically, dancehall and ragga, unfortunately; the guest toasters are the only real misstep here) and their newly acquired taste for dance and hip-hop. It’s a testament to No Doubt’s abilities as a band (not to mention their sheer likeability; they’re just so good-hearted and unpretentious, it’s hard to imagine getting angered about this band) that it neither sounds like pandering to the charts or the opening salvo in Stefani’s solo career — it simply sounds like a good, hooky, stylish mainstream pop record, something that’s rather rare in 2001. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
