Spanish for Adults is as Easy as Spanish for Children   by Eugene Riggs

You have heard of friends’ stories of their most recent trip to South America. It sounded like they had fun. Then you see photos of how beautiful the countries are and all of a sudden you want to go on an exotic trip down south. One thing is stopping you. You do not speak Spanish. Quite disturbing of how you can be so close to the continent and yet so far at the same time. You have heard of courses of Spanish for children from your local school, but you think it won’t apply to you. With your work schedule and memory capacity that comes with age, you begin to doubt. So you think you can teach yourself Spanish? Well, we think you can. Hang on to that exotic dream vacation of yours.

You can go to school and enroll yourself in a Spanish class. There are also dozens of books available that teach basic Spanish. They have morphed into audio-books and distributed in CD’s and downloadable MP3’s. Then, the online Spanish courses were introduced.

For the young learners, like our children, enrolling them in a short term course on Spanish for children is more convenient. Youngsters are actually more apt to adapt learning a second language than adults. Therefore, getting them in that Spanish class is better. They have a well trained teacher who probably has Spanish as a primary language. How about adults? Which of the options are more feasible for us? Don’t think that just because of age, we are hapless in learning a foreign tongue. You can teach yourself Spanish like I did.

Online Spanish courses have been developed by linguists, educators and learning experts so that learning can be as effective as teaching Spanish for children. Have you noticed how a child easily picks up a new language while growing up without have formal classes? These experts have studied that behavior and learning process and applied it to these online language courses so you can teach yourself Spanish.

These online courses are informative and interactive at the same time, just like classroom learning. You can print off resources so you can have reading materials and study notes just like books. Modules can actually be downloaded to an MP3 player or burned to a CD so you can listen to your classes in the car or while working out in the gym. You can then log back in on your course to answer exercises or tests materials to check your progress. Should you have any questions, these online courses have a student support group so you can be clarified.

About the Author

Learning another language has become imperative: whether it’s learning a few catchy phrases for your vacation to one of those Spanish-speaking countries; for business enrichment or for personal improvement. Kids are more adaptable to learning, so go ahead and get those courses on Spanish for children. And if kids can do it, so can you.

Based on the authorÂ’s own upbringing, Flower Children tells the story of four children growing up in rural Pennsylvania, impossibly at odds with their surroundings. In time, as the sheltered utopia their parents have created begins to collapse, the children long for structure and restraint – and all their parents have avoided.

Formational Children's Ministry: Shaping Children Using Story, Ritual, and Relationship

Formational Children’s Ministry: Shaping Children Using Story, Ritual, and Relationship

$15.99

“Much ministry to children looks more like mere entertainment than authentic spiritual formation. But what if children’s ministries were rooted in a mind set whereby we taught children, with our words and actions, how the story of God, the story of church history, the story of the local community, and the story of the child intersect and speak to one another? What if children’s ministry was less about downloading information into kids’ heads and more about leading them into these powerful, compelling stories? Beckwith aims to help ministers and parents create a ministry that captures children’s imaginations not just to keep them occupied, but to live as citizens of the kingdom of God. In addition to providing theological reasons for formational children’s ministry, the book offers examples of how Ivy and other practitioners are implementing a formational model.”

Peter and the Children: 66 Puppet Talks

Peter and the Children: 66 Puppet Talks

$14.99

“Effectively communicating with young people is vitally important–we are constantly challenged to share the story of God’s love in a way that really connects with them. Using puppets is an increasingly popular method for establishing a rapport with children and capturing their attention. Puppets are much more than just another gimmick–because children (and adults, too ) carefully listen to and absorb the messages presented, they can be a very useful teaching tool. If you are interested in trying this captivating approach in your congregation, then Peter And The Children is just the resource for you. H. Burnham Kirkland has created 66 short pieces perfect for “children’s time” in worship services or Sunday school classrooms. Employing witty dialogue between a presenter and a handheld puppet named Peter, the frequently humorous and always instructive scenes can be used as written or to help generate ideas for your own presentations. Kirkland writes in a direct style that’s easy for young people to understand, and makes the Christian faith relevant to their lives.”

The True Story of Saint Nicholas

The True Story of Saint Nicholas

$16

“Santa Claus is real. > His name comes from the Dutch colloquial “Sinterklaas,” a short way of saying Sint Nicolaas. This charming book, ideal for under the Christmas tree, is the result of the effort of a great-grandmother from Marblehead, Massachusetts to tell her family about the real Santa Claus, a Christian saint born around 260 AD, known to us as St. Nicholas. His way of giving anonymously became the foundation for today’s Christmas Eve visitor, filling the stockings of expectant children. > Mrs. Haskell felt it was important for her family to understand the real person behind today’s distorted conception. St. Nicholas was not the creation of a cabal of department store merchandisers, or Madison Avenue advertising agencies; he was an important figure in the early Church, and a participant in the Council of Nicaea. > Royalties from this book, published so that other families can pass along the true background of our favorite Christmas tradition, will go to Mrs. Haskell’s home church in Salem, Massachusetts. > This book offers families a way to add an element of authenticity to their Christmas celebration, and help their children understand what Christmas is really all about.”

A War of Gifts: An Ender Story

A War of Gifts: An Ender Story

Orson Scott Card offers a Christmas gift to his millions of fans with this short novel set during Ender’s first years at the Battle School where it is forbidden to celebrate religious holidays. The children come from many nations, many religions; while they are being trained for war, religious conflict between them is not on the curriculum. But Dink Meeker, one of the older students, doesn’t see it that way. He thinks that giving gifts isn’t exactly a religious observation, and on Sinterklaas Day he tucks a present into another student’s shoe. This small act of rebellion sets off a battle royal between the students and the staff, but some surprising alliances form when Ender comes up against a new student, Zeck Morgan. The War over Santa Claus will force everyone to make a choice.

Sun Rays: Tales for Children of Every Age

Sun Rays: Tales for Children of Every Age

$17

“In those hasty moments when a child can no longer stand the insanity of the grown-up world and the only way to properly react is to cry, there is nothing like a good story to help wind them back in. Stories bring us together. These days, families fall apart because they lack a common story. Nation rises up against nation because we’ve traded shared stories for individual ideals. What is the antidote for the decay and erosion of our society? What is the cure for the sickness and separation of our day? Whatever it is, it starts in the home and it may be as simple as a circle of friends telling tales. Let us come on our knees like children, sit at the feet of our Master, and listen as he tells us a story . . .This collection is for anyone who is a child: fifty-one tales in all, written with brevity in the interest of short attention spans, yet didactic in that each contains a moral center. While they are geared towards both younger children and teenagers, parents and educators may find themselves awakening as they read, leaving them to wonder, “Who is the child? And who is the Teacher?”"

Dearest Children

Dearest Children

$19

“Is your family life seemingly broken beyond repair? Have you lost hope of ever having a peaceful family life? In Dearest Children, T. R. Lipscomb shares very candidly her family’s journey through life. Her story is a very real look at life, marriage and children from the eyes of one who did not live the fairytale story with a fairytale ending. It is a true story that is raw with the reality and emotion that unfortunately, is probably closer to the reality of life for most in this day and age. After all of the details, twists and turns in this story, T. R. Lipscomb’s life lesson is that if you put your trust in God and look to Him to provide peace, comfort and healing, He can heal your family relationships and help you get through any situation that you are facing in life”

The Story of Bella

The Story of Bella

$12.95

“The Story of Bella is a story of hope and of trusting in a God who is greater than the pain; it is a story about faith, about dealing with the hard places in life, even if it does not turn out the way you want it to. But most of all, it is a story about love. The unrelenting love of a mother and father for their child, the love and support of friends, family and even strangers and the love of God who sees our hurts and cares for our deepest pain. 48 POEMS: Reflections Of A Poet

48 POEMS: Reflections Of A Poet

$64.61

48 POEMS is a highly stylized literary composition of electrifying poems, and may well be the most complete, comprehensive, and versatile book of its kind. There are 48 poems encompassing eight different genres: each genre containing six poems. The genres include: romantic, dramatic, Thanksgiving, tragic, comedic, ironic, Christmas, and children. Subtitled “Reflections Of A Poet,” because it gives an in-depth look into the heart, mind, and soul of one of North America’s “purest writers” of our time, who is bound only by the limits of his imagination and creativity. Romantic: Every man should read “Love Me With Your Heart” to his love one at least once. Dramatic: “You Can’t Break My Spirit” is the quintessential story of the black man’s conquest over slavery. Thanksgiving … “Thank You For Giving” will warm your heart as if it was a flaming charcoal on a cool summer night. Tragic: Tragedy… like death is a constant reminder of our immortality and “Untimely Death” will evoke tears and drown your eyes with compassion. Comedic: “Ugly Like A Truck” begs for laughter as this woman describes her man as “Ugly Like A Truck.” Ironic: nothing expresses irony like this prophecy, “A Messiah Is Coming” directed at President Barrack Obama. There’s the poem “One Nation Under Oprah” which cleverly frames Oprah Winfrey’s rise from the depths of the Mississippi Delta to the queen of talk show television, and her all girls’ school in South Africa. Christmas: There is no other poem that expresses “Christmastime In New York City” like this poem. The children’s genre … seemingly every child claims to have had “A Fly In My Soup.” 48 POEMS is a gold mine of love and language that is nothing short of a brilliant literary work that promotes literacy, academics and advances scholarship into the next millennium.

They all said that Bangladesh would be an experience…For Anne Hamilton, a three-month winter programme of travel and “cultural exchange” in a country where the English language, fair hair, and a rice allergy are all extremely rare was always going to be interesting, challenging, and frustrating. What they didn’t tell Anne was that it would also be sunny, funny, and the start of a love affair with this unexplored area of Southeast Asia.A Blonde Bengali Wife shows the lives beyond the poverty, monsoons, and diarrhoea of Bangladesh and charts a vibrant and fascinating place where one minute Anne is levelling a school playing field “fit for the national cricket team,” and then cobbling together a sparkly outfit for a formal wedding the next. Along with Anne are the essential ingredients for survival: a travel-savvy Australian sidekick, a heaven-sent adopted family, and a short, dark, and handsome boy-next-door. During her adventures zipping among the dusty clamour of the capital Dhaka, the longest sea beach in the world at Cox’s Bazaar, the verdant Sylhet tea gardens, and the voluntary health projects of distant villages, Anne amasses a lot of friends, stories…and even a husband.A Blonde Bengali Wife is the “unexpected travelogue” that reads like a comedy of manners to tell the other side of the story of Bangladesh. All money earned from A Blonde Bengali Wife goes direct to the charity, Bhola’s Children, of which the author and agent are active participants. A Blonde Bengali Wife isn’t about Bhola but it is a tribute to Anne’s journeys into Bangladesh and all the friends she has made there. Most of all, it is the story of the country that inspired Bhola’s Children.

According to Wikipedia: “Juliana Horatia Ewing (née Gatty) (1841-1885) was an English writer of children’s stories. She was the second of ten children of the Reverend Alfred Gatty, the vicar of Ecclesfield in Yorkshire, and Margaret Gatty, who was herself a children’s author… Roger Lancelyn Green calls her works the “first outstanding child-novels” in English literature.[1] Among her works, which are notable for their sympathetic insight into child-life, their admiration for military life, and their reflection of her strong Anglican faith, are: Mrs. Overtheway’s Remembrances (1869), A Flat Iron for a Farthing (1872), Six to Sixteen (1875), Jan of the Windmill (1876), Jackanapes (1884), and The Story of a Short Life (1885).”

Contributors present lucid syntheses of the best criticism available on their topics and, at the same time, offer original perspectives of their own. This Companion is essential reading for anyone interested in American literature from this important period.

 A Dickens Of A Carol

A Dickens Of A Carol

$12.95

In October 1843, Charles Dickens was, at 31, unhappy with his wife, distant from his children, and haunted by his dead sister-in-law and the memory of his bleak childhood. He was on the brink of estrangement with his father, and he was obsessed by a necessity to work and generate more income. When he was commissioned to write a pamphlet on workhouse conditions, he instead dreamt A Christmas Carol, and, for the first time in his astounding literary career, he wrote not in installments but the entire book in a very short period of time.Dickens’ family and friends documented that he dreamt entire chapters, acted out his stories, and was possessed by his characters while writing them. He would stand in front of the mirror for hours, contorting his face, becoming his myriad of characters. He would jump between the reality of his family and the reality of his story. Within the framework of Dickens composing his beautiful novella, the redemptive tale of A Christmas Carol is told, and the audience’s imagination makes the ghosts come to life.

 A Double Barrelled Detective Story

A Double Barrelled Detective Story

$25.65

Mark Twain is best known for his novels and short stories. Twain uses his incredible whit to depict life in America. His books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have been read by school children for generations. His life on the Mississippi River has peeked the imagination of boys to go and build a raft and sail off into unknown adventures. Double Barrelled Detective Story is a story in which Sherlock Holmes finds himself in the Old West. From Wikipedia, At a mining camp in California, Fetlock Jones, a nephew of Sherlock Holmes, kills his master, a silver-miner, by blowing up his cabin. Since this occurs when Holmes happens to be visiting, he brings his skills to bear upon the case and arrives at logically worked conclusions that are proved to be abysmally wrong by an amateur detective with an extremely keen sense of smell, which he employs in solving the case. This could be seen as yet another piece where Twain tries to prove that life does not quite follow logic.

A Dream Woke Me and Other Stories

The ordinary is never far away from the mythic in these fourteen stories: a mother orients herself after learning that her son is to emigrate; a house is flooded by perilous moonlight; a girl dreams of angels and mermaids; the ghost of a mother aches yearningly over her children. Imbued with a profound love of nature and an unsettling sense of the ancient powers of ghosts, mermaids and witches, these stories — multi-layered, memorably visible, and poetic — seem to grow out of the landscape of the wild north-west of Ireland. These stories of love found and lost, of the leaving of childhood and the quest for fulfillment, they remind us, above all, of the unending, almost sacred, duty to guard the imagination. Marilyn McLaughlin won the Brian Moore Short Story Award in 1996; this is her first book.

A Flat Iron for a Farthing or Some Passages in the Life of an Only Son

$0.95

More than a poignant story of the homefront during World War II, Dona Schmit’s life saga is bracketed by her childhood in the years of the Great Depression and her challenges during the crisis in America’s km economy in the l980s. Though her journey has ended in the rural community, Dona’s path to that end involves dramatic upheavals in her personal existence as well as significant changes in her homeland.Beginning with her strong-willed father, Dona is influenced by the men in her life. Two men eventually own her heart, one the father of her three daughters, around whom she fashions her own existence. Independent and determined, she feels she has found her life partner, but finds disappointment instead. She yearns to escape from rural hardships and finds, when thrust into life in the city, that she loves the excitement and pace of that experience. Torn between her desire to live in the city and her wish to provide a stable home for her children, Dona thinks she can forget the pleasures and conveniences of her stay in the fascinating metropolis. Further crises in her personal life cause her to cling to the small community she has adopted and that has adopted her. Many ties bind her to the place and time she inhabits, and she is ultimately filled with deep affection for the simple existence she acquires. Both blessings and tragedies flavor her life, many related to the tenure of the railroad as it passes through its own short tenure in America’s heartland.

A Jean Toomer Reader: Selected and Unpublished Writings

A Jean Toomer Reader: Selected and Unpublished Writings

$3.13

Jean Toomer achieved instant recognition as a critic and thinker in 1923 with the publication of his novel Cane, a harsh, eloquent vision of black American hardship and suffering. But because of his reclusive, introspective nature, Toomer’s fame waned in later years, and today his other contributions to American thought and literature are all but forgotten. Now, this collection of unpublished writings restores a crucial dimension to our understanding of this important African American author. Thematically arranging letters, sketches, poems, autobiography, short stories, a play, and a children’s story, Frederik Rusch offers insight into Toomer’s mind and spirituality, his feelings on racial identity in America, and his attitudes toward and ideas about Cane. Rusch highlights Toomer’s reflections on America, its people, landscape, and politics, reveals his significance for the problems and issues of today, and helps us understand Toomer not only as writer, but also as social critic, prophet, mystic, and idealist. Exploring Toomer’s attempts to find self-realization and transcend social and cultural definitions of race, this book offers a unique view of the United States through the life of one of its most significant and fascinating intellectuals.

A Kaleidoscope of Thoughts, Poems, Short Stories and Other Whimsey

$3.99

A Kaleidoscope of Thoughts, Poems, Short Stories and Other Whimsey, Volume One is full of personal experiences, reflections, thought provoking poems and one-liners. In this book Elvera takes the reader from serious to silly. Elvera opens her book with a challenging statement on thinking followed by the poem ‘For What’, as she leads the reader down the paths of captivity, slavery, the civil rights movement and to the present. It’s theme, History forgotten, History bound to repeat, becomes evident as you follow its progression and its seemingly regression. In her comments on Being Silly, Elvera writes “silliness should flush through your mind every now and then like a laxative through your system”. To this end, she explores some old Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes giving them a new look and a different spin. ‘The Trial of the “Big Bad” Wolf ‘, gives the wolf’s version of the Three Pig’s story. Although it’s intended to be humorous, Elvera still manage to deal with the issue of hatred and being bullied. This is a story not only for adults but for children as well. Even before this distribution, Elvera’s ‘The Trial of the “Big Bad” Wolf ‘ was adapted in play format and performed for elementary age children by the Fine Arts Department of Howard Community College. Her one-liners on Thinking, says a lot in so few words. Years before becoming Maryland’s Majority leader in the State Senate and a family friend, the late Senator Clarence Blount as her elementary school teacher, would say to her class: “Think young people, Think!” Elvera never forgot those words and in remembrance of him, wrote the one-liners to jog our thinking process. This thought provoking book is also designed to give the reader another insight into Death, Depression, Alzheimer and Aging. In Elvera’s questioning ‘Who is Schindler’, you may be surprised at the answer. Scattered throughout the book are blank pages to encourage the reader to immediately jot down any thoughts they wish to elabora

Mary Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930), born in Randolph, Massachusetts, began to publish stories about New England in the early 1880s. In the following decades, Freeman drew widespread praise for her intimate portraits of women and her realistic depictions of rural New England life. She published short stories, essays, novels, plays, and children’s books. Her stories, written in a clear and direct prose, are remarkable for their unpretentious, sympathetic portrayals of the lives of ordinary New Englanders of Freeman’s era. Many of the stories depict rebellion against oppressive social and private conditions. Others describe conflicting desires for independence and lasting relationships. This volume of twenty-eight stories is the first to provide a representative sample of Freeman’s finest work, from all phases of her career. It makes plain why Freeman (in the words of editor Mary R. Reichardt) is widely recognized as an important figure “in the history of American women’s fiction . . . and the development of the American short story.” Mary R. Reichardt is an associate professor of English at the University of St. Thomas. She is the author of Mary Wilkins Freeman: A Study of the Short Fiction and A Web of Relationship: Women in the Short Fiction of Mary Wilkins Freeman and the editor of The Uncollected Stories of Mary Wilkins Freeman.
