Bible Stories For Children Dissected, The Crossing Of The Red Sea
Many thousands of years ago, the Israelites were actually slaves to the Egyptians. When Moses and the Israelites finally left Egypt thousands of years ago on their infamous trek to their homeland they encountered many difficulties. The enormous Red Sea was on of these and became most famous for this story, the parting of the red sea. God told Moses in Exodus 14-15 that he was to lead the children of Israel to their homeland and that he, God, would take care of them. God warned Moses that there would be many trials and tribulations.
When Moses and the Israelites got to the Red Sea, their problem got compounded by the Egyptian army. The Egyptian leader, Pharaoh, had used the Israelites as slave labor to build his great pyramids and monuments. He only agreed to let them go after several plagues had been been brought upon Egypt. These plagues consisted of locusts that ruined crops, frogs, snakes, and even what is referred to as the death angel that took the life of each male firstborn child. The Pharaoh had enough after his son was killed and agreed to let the Israelites go back to Israel. Almost immediately he recounted his thoughts and sent a large portion of his army, chariots and all, after the Israelites.
So, when the Israelites arrived at the Red Sea, they saw the arriving Egyptians and panicked. Moses prayed to God for deliverance and God opened up the Red Sea, parting it so the Israelites could cross. There are two schools of thought on this. One is that it did occur exactly as stated in the story. The other that it occurred in North Egypt in the marshlands of the Northern end or mouth of the Nile river. This are of the Nile would have been very difficult for chariots to get through as they would have gotten bogged down and stuck in the mud and dense weeds. This would have been a great place for an ambush by the Israelites and there would have been mass casualties by the unprepared Egyptians. This could perhaps be the first instance of what we today refer to as Gorilla warfare. Whichever school you choose to believe it is fact that the Israelites did embark on this trek as artifacts and other archaeological proof has been found that unequivocally prove this.
Back to the Story Of the parting of the Red Sea, the Israelites were scared and prayed to God for deliverance. God brought darkness, possible thunderstorms, over the Egyptians and fire over the Israelites, possible lightening. God then told Moses to raise his hands at the sea. The sea then parted and the Israelites did cross the sea. After the Israelites did cross the sea and arrive on dry land, the Egyptians started to cross. God told Moses to raise his hands again and the sea was flooded once more and the Egyptians were drowned in it. In the end of the story, the Israelites sang songs and praised God for their deliverance from the Egyptians and slavery.
There are many ideas and schools of thought with different points of view on what actually occurred here, but archaeological proof does exist that the trek and crossing from Egypt to Israel did occur and that numerous hardships did occur. Religion and God played a large role in this trek and in these times thousands of years ago. In current research, the use of bible coding software also states that this trek occurred. It also states that Moses, the Ten Commandments, and how the bible was encoded or revealed to Moses may soon have great impact on all of us as the possibility of further expansion of the war in the Middle East continues. God did have a marked impact on the Israelites on their infamous trek thousands of years ago, and the reason for the implicit warnings in Revelations and the recent unveiling of the bible codes is that we can change. We can, as a whole, change or alter our future.

Stories To Tell To Children $1.79 pubOne.info thank you for your continued support and wish to present you this new edition. Concerning the fundamental points of method in telling a story, I have little to add to the principles which I have already stated as necessary, in my opinion, in the book of which this is, in a way, the continuation. But in the two years which have passed since that book was written, I have had the happiness of working on stories and the telling of them, among teachers and students all over this country, and in that experience certain secondary points of method have come to seem more important, or at least more in need of emphasis, than they did before. As so often happens, I had assumed that "those things are taken for granted; " whereas, to the beginner or the teacher not naturally a story-teller, the secondary or implied technique is often of greater difficulty than the mastery of underlying principles. The few suggestions which follow are of this practical, obvious kind. |

How To Tell Stories To Children: And Some Stories To Tell $5.59 The great difference between telling and reading is that the teller is free; the reader is bound. The book in hand, or the wording of it in mind, binds the reader. The story-teller is bound by nothing; he stands or sits, free to watch his audience, free to follow or lead every changing mood, free to use body, eyes, voice, as aids in expression. Even his mind is unbound, because he lets the story come in the words of the moment, being so full of what he has to say. For this reason, a story told is more spontaneous than one read, however well read. And, consequently, the connection with the audience is closer, more electric, than is possible when the book or its wording intervenes. Beyond this advantage, is the added charm of the personal element in story-telling. When you make a story your own and tell it, the listener gets the story, plus your appreciation of it. It comes to him filtered through your own enjoyment. That is what makes the funny story thrice funnier on the lips of a jolly raconteur than in the pages of a memoir. It is the filter of personality. Everybody has something of the curiosity of the primitive man concerning his neighbour; what another has in his own person felt and done has an especial hold on each one of us. The most cultured of audiences will listen to the personal reminiscences of an explorer with a different tingle of interest from that which it feels for a scientific lecture on the results of the exploration. The longing for the personal in experience is a very human longing. And this instinct or longing is especially strong in children. It finds expression in their delight in tales of what father or mother did when they were little, of what happened to grandmother when she went on a journey, and so on, but it also extends to stories which are not in themselves personal. The greater ease in holding the attention of children is, for teachers, a sufficient practical reason for telling stories rather than reading them. It is incomparably easier to make the necessary exertion of "magnetism," or whatever it may be called, when nothing else distracts the attention. One's eyes meet the children's gaze naturally and constantly; one's expression responds to and initiates theirs without effort; the connection is immediate. For the ease of the teacher, then, no less than for the joy of the children, may the art of story-telling be urged as pre-eminent over the art of reading. It is a very old, a very beautiful art. Merely to think of it carries one's imaginary vision to scenes of glorious and touching antiquity. The tellers of the stories of which Homer's Iliad was compounded; the transmitters of the legend and history which make up the Gesta Romanorum; the travelling raconteurs whose brief heroic tales are woven into our own national epic; the grannies of age-old tradition whose stories are parts of Celtic folk-lore, of Germanic myth, of Asiatic wonder-tales, – these are bu |

When the Children Came Home: Stories of Wartime Evacuees $22.39 On 1 September 1939 Operation Pied Piper began. Its aim was to place the children of Britain’s industrial cities beyond the reach of the Luftwaffe. The figures are breathtaking. One-and-a-half million children pregnant women and school teachers were evacuated in two days. A further two million children were evacuated privately and some of these children went abroad. Operation Pied Piper was well coordinated and highly efficient. In total over a four year period in excess of three and a half million children were removed from areas in Britain vulnerable to attack or invasion. It added up to the largest mass evacuation of children in British history and although by and large it worked its impact is still felt today. With a mix of vivid narrative and illuminating social history Evacuees tells the story of those children and the families they left behind. Many of those evacuated never knew if or when they would see their parents again. Many of them had no idea about life outside the city and almost all were homesick. It was distressing for the parents and bewildering for little siblings left behind. Evacuees also looks at the situations faced by returning evacuees and explores how they coped both in the immediate aftermath of the war and in later life. Using interviews written accounts and memoirs Evacuees weaves together a collection of personal stories to create a compelling portrait of wartime Britain. |

Very Short Stories and Verses for Children (Dodo Press) $18.77 Lucy Clifford (18461929), better known as Mrs. W. K. Clifford, was a British novelist and journalist. She married the mathematician and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford in 1875. After his death in 1879, she earned a prominent place in English literary life as a novelist, and later as a dramatist. She is perhaps most often remembered as the author of The Anyhow Stories, Moral and Otherwise (1882), a collection of stories written for her children. Kiss Your Elbow – A Kentucky Memoir $16.29 You’ll want to spend every minute of your time with the O’Daniel Family, experiencing their simple adventures in a way that only this oldest daughter can weave them. Written with a sense of hope and an amazing capture of mid-twentieth century detail, you will enjoy the opportunity to:Revisit big department stores again, when Louisville’s only place to shop was downtown Spend a delightful day at Fontaine Ferry, Louisville’s famous amusement park Be part of the quarrels, love and joy – feeling the bonds of this close knit era, when dependence on family members and neighbors was essential.Experience farm life in the suburbs. Deanna’s classmates jumped rope in subdivisions while the O’Daniels slopped hogs, killed chickens, and hoped they went to school without smelling like the animals they tended.Only a few can tell their story coherently like Deanna does with this touching memoir. A chronicle of many customs and places that are fast slipping away from our collective memories, such as her description of the country store in Nelson County, Kentucky. A book you will tell others, “I’m so fond of this one.”John Allen Boyd, Emerson Avery, That Latin TeacherDeanna’s story is of dedicated parents and (eventually) 11 children. They migrated near Louisville, Kentucky when Deanna was five. Her stories about those formative years paint a portrait in glowing colors, depicting struggles and love that molds and endures. You will love Deanna and her story.Terry Cummins, Feed My SheepO’Daniel, a gifted writer who tightly weaves her life’s journey through stories that makes growing up on a farm sound like sunshine. She shares the daily toil, angst and rivalry associated with a large family in a humorous, but realistic way – tugging at your heart for a piece of those bygone days.Corrider Jones, A Backward Gla |

”Soul & Spirit” $16.72 America is a land of immigrants. We each have a unique story to tell. Most stories will never be known beyond the first generation’s memories. To fit in with the dominate culture; most immigrants were pressured into denying their cultural roots. They never passed on their language or cultural histories to the next generation. Memories are treasures we enjoy in our golden years. We keep them alive by sharing with the next generation. My greatest treasure has been discovering the roots of my identity, my cultural base in the Nation of Cape Verde. This knowledge gives me pride; it adds unique perspective and value to my life. This book expresses my quest to discover my cultural roots. My grandparents provided support for the first generation born in America to survive and strive for the American dream. They came to America to find a better life and future for those left behind. In 1909 Nicholau and Rosa Pires, emigrated to the United States from the Island of Fogo, Cape Verde. They had four children born in America, Anna, Margaret, Roche, and my father Vasco. One daughter, Mimi, born in Cape Verde, remained there. In 1947 at the age of six, my father brought me from Ohio to live with my Cape Verdean grandparents on Cape Cod. My grandfather was Portuguese educated and learned just enough English to get his U.S. citizenship in 1946. In his house only Kriolu (Cape-Verdean spoken language) was spoken. The neighborhood was primarily Cape Verdean and most was from the same area on the Island Fogo. Sandwich Road, in the village of Teaticket, Massachusetts, was like a transplanted village from Cape Verde set in America. My grandmother, Rose “Ke’Ke’” was the friendly visitor of the community. She would walk the length of Sandwich Road (about two miles) at least once a week to visit relatives and friends, share the news, latest gossip from the Islands, and visit those who were ill. She would often take me along. The foundation of my love, pride, and longing |

”The feelings of my family are with me.”: The posttraumatic coping of adolescent survivors of the Holocaust. $49.99 The long-term effects of genocidal wars on adolescent survivors are not sufficiently understood. Holocaust survivors can help us understand more clearly the long-term impacts of genocide, as well as the coping mechanisms survivors have used through the years to cope with those impacts.;This study, guided by the theoretical lenses of the traumatic stress, coping, and resilience literatures, is a secondary analysis of the interviews of 18 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who were between the ages of 12 and 18 during World War II. The sample is purposive and taken from the Transcending Trauma Project data base, an ongoing qualitative research study of Holocaust survivors, their children, and grandchildren. Interviews were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach and facilitated by the use of NUD.ist 4 qualitative software.;This study found three major long-term impacts on these individuals which continued into old age: sadness of the losses, including multiple losses of family members, loss of childhood, and loss of education; traumatic memories, including traumatic dreams; and anxiety and hyper-vigilance, especially regarding children and the world political situation. Love and work—intimate social support, and work that functioned to provide meaning in survival as well as distraction from traumatic memories—were the foundations of coping. Other important coping mechanisms used to manage the traumatic impacts of the Holocaust were: loyalty to the dead, the search for meaning and “survivor mission,” stories of strength, telling the trauma, and a community of sameness. Survivors managed the impacts of the war while still being able to “work well and love well.” |

”Through the looking-glass”: Magical and misused objects in nineteenth century children’s literature. $49.99 This thesis uses stories from St. Nicholas magazine, between the years 1873 and 1905, to examine the representation and function of objects in 19th century, children’s fantasy literature. Objects play prominent roles in two dichotomous genres: Marchen (folktales and fairy tales) which first originated as an oral storytelling tradition for peasants and Nonsense stories (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland , for example), which emerged after America and England’s Industrial Revolutions to entertain children of the new middle class. Both genres developed as a means to empower their audiences.;Marchen stories create a world in which magic already exists. The protagonists gain access to magic objects which allow their individual ascents to power. These magic objects demonstrate enhanced functions. Besides performing their first function, they also perform a magic function. Seven league boots, for example, cushion and protect feet, but also allow the hero to walk seven leagues in a single stride. Magic objects let the hero cheat. He is unbeatable with a Sword of Potency or a Necklace of Strength. He will vanquish the villain, win the princess, and become king. He uses the objects to achieve a change in status and wealth.;Nonsense stories create alternate realities. Protagonists are children who get lured from their world into an alternate realm. They must find their way back home by learning the rules of the new world and how to use its objects. Nonsense objects are juxtaposed, transformed, appropriated, or vivified. Juxtaposition forms relationships between two unrelated objects. Transformation changes objects’ materiality. Appropriation finds new uses for objects. Vivification brings objects to life. The children experience cognitive dissonance when interacting with misused objects. Objects both hinder and help children’s journey, but ultimately mediate the children’s identity quest. Child protagonists leave the alternate world more confident in themselves and their |

100 Birds and how They Got Their Names $18.95 How did cranes come to symbolize matrimonial happiness? Why were magpies the only creatures that would not go inside Noah’s Ark? Birds and bird imagery are integral parts of our language and culture. With her remarkable ability to dig up curious and captivating facts, Diana Wells hatches a treat for active birders and armchair enthusiasts alike. Meet the intrepid adventurers and naturalists who risked their lives to describe and name new birds. Learn the mythical stories of the gods and goddess associated with bird names. Explore the avian emblems used by our greatest writers–from Coleridge’s albatross in “The Ancient Mariner” to Poe’s raven.A sampling of the bird lore you’ll find inside:Benjamin Franklin didn’t want the bald eagle on our National Seal because of its “bad moral character,” (it steals from other birds); he lobbied for the turkey instead.Chaffinches, whose Latin name means “unmarried,” are called “bachelor birds” because they congregate in flocks of one gender.Since mockingbirds mimic speech, some Native American tribes fed mockingbird hearts to their children, believing it helped them learn language.A group of starlings is called a murmuration because they chatter so when they roost in the thousands.Organized alphabetically, each of these bird tales is accompanied by a two-color line drawing. 100 Simple Secrets of Happy Families: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It $11.95 The Simple Science of a Happy FamilyFrom raising children to getting along with in-laws, what do people with close and loving families do differently than those with strained or unfulfilling relationships? Sociologists, therapists, and psychiatrists have spent entire careers investigating the ins and outs of family dynamics, yet their findings are inaccessible to ordinary people, hidden in obscure journals to be shared with other experts. Now, David Niven, the international bestselling author of The 100 Simple Secret series has collected the most current and significant data from more than a thousand of the best scientific studies on families and then spelled out the findings in plain English. The advice is based not on one person’s unique experiences or opinions, but offers for the first time the research of noted scientists studying average American families. These findings have been boiled down to one hundred essential ways to find and maintain love, joy, and satisfaction in all family relationships. Each statistic is accompanied by a true story about a real family showing the results in action.Don’t Forget the Past: Parents who share stories of family history with their children create higher levels of concern for family members and increase the likelihood of their children’s happiness. No Price Tag: Once basic necessities are met, the increasing economic status of one’s family has zero effect on the likelihood of feeling satisfied with life.Let Every Opinion Be Heard: Senior citizens having trouble living in their own homes are 84 percent more likely to be satisfied with their housing situation if they feel as if their concerns are an important part of selecting a new home or facility. The Greatest Gift: Life satisfaction is 72 percent more likely among those who feel content with their family life. |
