The Four Little Children: A Likely Story $27 During my time away, I included in letters to Sybil stories that she could read to our children. I felt that they would be thrilled to read of adventures that included themselves as the primary characters. Fortunately, Sybil saved all of my letters, which after these many years I have finally compiled. Those times were much more difficult for Sybil than for me. She had to raise four little children and worry about me too. It was even more difficult for her as she was living in a civilian environment where most peoples contact with the Vietnam conflict was to read about it in the papers or watch the protests on television. She worried about losing a husband. Family, a few close friends and the nightly news got her through a difficult time in our lives. from the foreword to The Four Little Children by Larry Michalove He didnt write about the war or the 114 combat missions he flew, earning him the Distinguished Flying Cross and eight air medals. Instead he wove tales about Martians and moon people and mermaids and the sea. Little Princes $8.99 So as not to seem completely self-indulgent to his friends and family, Conor started his year-long trip around the world with a three-month stint volunteering in the Little Princes Orphanage in war-torn Nepal. What began as a cover story changed Conor"s life, and the lives of countless others, forever. The turning point occurred during Conor’s second stint as a volunteer with Little Princes. While playing on the roof of the orphanage, Conor was approached by a woman who would turn out to be the mother of two of the wards. Over hours of conversations with her, Conor learned the truth. Many of the little princes were not orphans but children that had been taken from their homes by child traffickers. In addition to losing two of her boys, this woman, while under the control of a human trafficker, was doing her best to keep seven other terrified kids alive. Conor’s life changed in those moments, as he decided to commit himself to these unfortunates. After securing spots in an orphanage for all seven and arranging for an excellent local staff to run the Little Princes Orphanage, Conor escaped Nepal, one day before revolution erupted in Kathmandu. After arriving home, Conor received a devastating email reporting that the seven kids had disappeared, snatched once again by the same trafficker. Soon he was back in Kathmandu, riding through the chaotic streets on the back of a local’s motorcycle, searching for his kids, seven needles in a corrupt haystack. And that is where Conor’s story begins. Conor pledged to not only start a new orphanage for these seven but also to start an entire new programme dedicated to reuniting kids with their lost families in remote villages in the Nepalese hills. He lived under constant fear of retribution from the traffickers. He needed to return to the US by 22 December, both because that was the agreed-upon panic date on which friends would alert authorities if he didn’t return, and because it was the date that the woman he’d fallen in love with over email would arrive at his door so they could, at long last, meet in person. Conor’s tale is an epic thriller, and a love story, and is best told by Conor himself. |

One Small Boat: The Story Of A Little Girl Lost Then Found $16.99 This story of one little girl’s journey through our foster-care system forms an intimate portrait of foster care in America and the children whose lives are forever shaped by it. Augusten Burroughs called Kathy Harrison’s memoir Another Place at the Table a "riveting and profoundly moving story of a hero disguised as an everyday woman." In One Small Boat Harrison tells the story of one little girl who arrived on her doorstep and describes how caring for this child was an experience that challenged everything she thought she knew about foster-care parenting and the needs of the children she shelters. Daisy was five when she arrived in Harrison’s bustling home. Mother of three children by birth and three by adoption and with a handful of foster kids always coming and going Harrison had ten children under her roof at any given time. But Daisy was in many ways unique. Daisy’s birth mother wasn’t poor uneducated or drug addicted. She simply couldn’t bring herself to take care of her little girl and the effects on the child were heartrending. Daisy was unwilling to eat-even frightened of it-and seemed to have a severe speech impediment. After two weeks in Kathy’s loving home however Daisy began to thrive. What had happened to her? And how can a foster-care parent give back all that has been taken from a child like Daisy-knowing that she might leave one day very soon? Harrison had seen many children pass through her doors but this one touched her in a way she didn’t immediately understand. One Small Boat will be of deep interest to anyone who has nurtured and cared for a child or anyone interested in the intricate web that is our social welfare system. This story of one little girl’s journey through our foster-care system forms an intimate portrait of foster care in America and the children whose lives are forever shaped by it. $O$ $10.99 Representing the Lady Gaga Era? s dark underbelly, South Africa? s Die Antwoord are the real ? Little Monsters? of their time, brought to fame by a series of videos that looked like David Cronenberg and Keith Haring were co-directing. On their debut album, $O$, the music is just as phantasmagoric, unsettling, and bursting with the same sick humor as their videos, but there? s also the same amount of care put into the product. Even as these incredibly busy hip-hop-meets-rave productions rocket toward the brink of chaos, the listener is harnessed in by layers of hooks and plenty of cheeky musical ideas. First, there? s the setup: a duo of South African? s trashiest trailer kids, including a lead male rapper, Ninja, who is obsessed with his namesake plus a albino kewpie doll, pixie-voiced back-up singer, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, who often channels her inner sex goddess even when she? s traditionally unsexy. A third, shadow member, DJ Hi-Tek, supplies much of the music, making wonderfully outlandish decisions like sampling Smile.dk? s sugary hit ? Butterfly? for the massive ? Enter the Ninja,? a hypnotic motivational track that should pump up any given mutant before they enter the ring. When ? Scopie? – this album is chock-full of NSFW South African slang — samples ? Short Dick Man,? it? s clever, and borrowing from the Bronski Beat for the epic sex track ? Beat Boy? is just one example of the album? s fascinating love of old synth music, from new wave to gabba hardcore with a little love thrown dubstep? s way. Jamaican dancehall is referenced on ? Evil Boy,? which turns Little Red Riding Hood into a story of phallic bragging, as is dancehall? s iffy relationship with the ? batty boy? , because Die Antwoord are hardly politically correct. Elsewhere, your mom? s private parts end up in a ? Fish Paste? jar as an insult, and Ninja? s idea of a sexual encounter always requires post-coital mops and buckets. If it matters, none of this is re… |

18 Lives $3.71 (Story Line)18 LIVES: The Adventures of Sam and Emil While teaching grammar to 6th graders 20 years ago, even I was bored by the trite lessons provided in the ancient practice books available for the teaching of English usage. My family at that time included two black cats one of Siamese ancestry, both interesting individuals. Their names have been changed to Sam and Emil. It occurred to me that it would be more fun for me, and perhaps my students, if I used their adventures in lessons. So I began composing “Sam and Emil” exercises. I started by using “cat” worksheets once or twice a week. At first the students were a little wary, but soon began to look forward to the newest antics of “yowling” Emil and ever-patient Sam. Of course the kids groaned at seeing the worksheets (as kids tend to do), but I soon began to notice that they quickly read the whole page before starting the work required. I fully intended to make time to put together a workbook with these exercises, but was always too busy. Now retired, I have c hanged my focus to writing a book or series aimed at the young and the “ever-young” like me. I’m hoping some of my former students and perhaps their children will find these “semi-true” tales interesting and bring back some happy memories of “Mrs. Kintner”. I have loved writing of this zany pair and their “true-to-life” adventures, even finding myself chuckling over each ridiculous situation. Margaret (Kintner) White |

A Black Cat Tale $23.6 Everyone knows black cats can fly on Halloween. But where they go and what they do is a mystery. Now all is revealed in “Tarzan A Black Cat Tale”, a book for all cat lovers ages five to ninety-five.When Mom brought me home (I called her Mom because that’s what the kids Bruce and Katie aged ten and twelve call her), Mom’s friend Mrs. Mene gasped, “An alley cat! Where ever did you pick up that ragbag?” Mom’s face stiffened a little but she answered gently, “There is no such thing as an alley cat. If a cat’s in an alley, a human being put it there.”Mrs. Mene sniffed but said no more. She didn’t notice me glaring at her. I vowed to myself to remember her insults and get revenge no matter how long it took. The family decided to name me Tarzan, not only because my coat is black as tar but, to raise my ego, they named me after the hero in Edgar Rice Burrowghts’ story, Tarzan of the Apes. As if my ego needed raising! Folks don’t know black cats can do other things other cats and pets can’t do. Even Titi, my companion, doesn’t believe me when I tell her what I do on Halloween.Halloween is my night because that is the night of the black cat. People have seen pictures of us silhouetted against the moon ever since they were children but nobody knows where we go or what we do… |

Evelyn, Abigail, Margot, and Liza are as real and endearing as my own closest friends, and as I turned the last page I felt that sweet, satisfying sorrow in having to say goodbye that marks the work of a writer at the top of her game.” —Kristy Kiernan, author of Catching Genius and Matters of Faith “Bostwick makes a seamless transition from |

Alice in Wonderland Made Simple for Kids $17.95 Alice in Wonderland made simple for kids Adopted from the original by Lewis Carroll with all of the Original Drawings by John Tenniel Alice in Wonderland was originally a story told to three little girls aged 8 to 13 during a boat ride in 1865. One of the little girls was named Alice. She asked the story-teller to write it down and later on he did. Eventually, it was published and immediately it became a great sensation. However, the story is complex and difficult to follow. Few children can read and understand it, especially since it is filled with puzzles, riddles and logical problems. Most of the time, Mothers read it to their daughters. Adults read and study it as well. There are even political aspects to the story, as some of the characters were drawn to resemble British officials in power at the time. For example, “Bill the Lizard” is suspected of being a caricature of the British Prime Minister in office at the time. The author here has a six-year-old daughter who likes to look at the pictures of Alice and her friends but can read few of the words. Therefore, the original work has been rewritten in short simple words and sentences that a child aged 6 to 10 should be able to read. At the same time, the story line of the original has been followed faithfully. All of the original characters are still here. All of the 42 drawings in the original work are used. The length has been greatly reduced mostly by reducing the lengthy dialogues. Yet, the flavor of the conversations has been preserved. It is hoped that even adults will find this book useful, as the original work is a difficult read requiring many hours of study and concentration. Here, an adult can read this in a fewminutes and turn to the original for the parts that seem most interesting. Large print size for easy reading |

Alligator $16.98 The National may sound like a garage band turned down, but there’s as much primal energy lurking behind Alligator as in any mop-topped group of city kids with bloodstained Danelectros in a dusty warehouse. While Matt Berninger’s lyrics and conversational delivery rely heavily on the kind of literate self-absorption that fuels so much of the indie rock scene today, he never comes off as preachy or unaware that the world would manage just fine without him; rather, he uses metaphor and humor as bullet points for a profound sense of displacement and anger. Out-of-the-blue statements like “f*ck me and make me a drink,” from the brooding but lovely “Karen,” are effective because the listener is brought into the story slowly, almost amiably, before being led to the plank. Berninger’s wry, filthy, and often eloquently sad tales of materialism, sex, and loneliness are augmented by the stellar duel-sibling attack of Aaron Dessner (guitar) and Bryce Dessner (guitar) and Scott Devendorf (guitar/bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums), who flesh out each track with so many little creative flourishes that it takes a few listens to break them down into palatable portions. There are upbeat moments found within — “Lit Up” and “Looking for Astronauts” — but for the most part the National are content with playing the genial fatalists, and while “All the Wine” seems designed to serve as the record’s desolate backbone, “Baby, We’ll Be Fine,” with its quick changes, lush orchestration, and winsome refrain of “I’m so sorry for everything” is, despite an elegiac delivery, Alligator’s loneliest track, and like each part of this fine collection of city-weary poetry, it’s as brief as it is affecting. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

Antigua Rising $0.99 How much can a little girl lose? What has she left to gain? These questions are at the crux of “Antigua Rising,” a short story about loss, adaptation, and revival in rural America.Excerpt:She was in the bus on her way home from school when she first saw Antigua dead on the highway.“I used orange and green string.” The boy next to her held out a dream catcher he’d made in class. It was crooked and looked stomped on.The girl didn’t acknowledge him. She stared out the window at something they passed by in the bus, something in the road. She craned her neck, watched whatever it was being left behind, and then turned around in the seat. Her pulse crashed in her ears. She bunched her dress up in her fists.“Hey,” said the boy, “are you all right?”She nodded. After a moment, the boy moved to a different seat with the dream catcher.“Sit down back there, Rufus!”The bus driver glared into her mirror. Rufus dropped into the nearest seat. There were two kids in it already. The fourth stop was the girl’s. The bus came to a squealing halt. The door flipped open with a clank, grind, and whoosh. It was just spring outside. Frozen things were thawed now. The air smelled of exhumed dead, damp and sour. The sky was particularly heavy and gray, and the leaves were just saturated enough to soak through to the girl’s shoes and socks by the time she walked from the bus to the front porch of the house. It was like the leaves never left, thought the girl: blown around, crunched up under her feet, but always there. Antigua would not be on the highway the following spring. Now she was on the road, her front paws crossed in front of her as if arranged with care. If not for the nickel-sized puddle of blood, it would look like Antigua simply napped on the center yellow line. The girl knew her cat was dead, that her feet were |

Assisted Loving: True Tales of Double Dating with My Dad $10.99 What would you do if your eighty-year-old father dragged you into his hell-bent hunt for new love? Bob Morris, a seriously single son, tells you all about it in this warm, witty, and wacky chronicle of a year of dating dangerously. A few months after the death of his wife, Joe Morris, an affable, eccentric, bridge-obsessed octogenarian, starts flapping about for a replacement. If he can get a new hip, he figures, why not a new wife? At first, his son Bob is appalled, but suspicion quickly turns to enthusiasm as he finds himself trolling the personals, screening prospects, and offering etiquette tips, chaperoning services, and post-date assessments to his needy father. Bob hopes that Joe will find a well-heeled lady—or at least one who is very patient—to get him out of his hair. But soon they discover that finding a new mate will not be as easy as they think: one date is too morose, another too liberal; one’s a three-timer, another just needs an escort until Mr. Right comes along. Dad persists and son assists. Am I pimping for my father? he begins to wonder. Meanwhile, Bob suffers similar frustrations; trying to find love isn’t easy in a big-city market that has little use for a middle-aged gay man with an attitude and a paunch. But with the encouragement of his father (his biggest fan and the world’s “most democratic Republican”) he prevails. In the end, this memoir becomes a twin love story and a soulful lesson about giving and receiving affection with an open heart. With wicked humor and a dollop of compassion, Bob Morris gleefully explores the impact of senior parents on their boomer kids and the perils of dating at anyage. |

Baseball Guy $18.34 Baseball Guy is a rhyming story that takes you through every level of the game; from Little League to the majors, even to just being a fan. Gordy Jones also slips in many of life’’s lessons which are related to baseball, such as teamwork, goal setting, education, respect, family, and more. The big colorful illustrations are not only eye catching, but help you to remember a much more innocent and carefree time. The back pages are filled with special messages from current and former greats of the game including Joe Mauer, Michael Cuddyer, and Harmon Killebrew among others, along with original photographs by Gordy Jones. As Minnesota Twin Michael Cuddyer says, I feel that Baseball Guy is not only a good read for kids, but also a great read for the fan in all of us. |

Becoming a Family: Promoting Healthy Attachements with Your Adopted Child $14.95 It is a story that moves us to tears. An American couple travels across the world to rescue a child from the hopelessness of a foreign orphanage, bringing their new son or daughter to a life of love and family. But does this transition always go smoothly? Adoptive parents hope their child will easily fit into the family and quickly become emotionally connected to the parents or siblings. But child psychologists and adoption experts say this connection is the most difficult aspect of international adoption. In countries where international adoptions are common-China, Russia, or Romania-orphanages commonly represent the available children to their new parents as healthy kids who just need a little love. In many cases, this is a gross misrepresentation. Children who spend time in institutionalized care may have experienced trauma, and therefore may not attach easily to their new family. Parents anxious to bring these children into their homes and their hearts struggle seriously with this issue. Although these children will eventually adapt in a healthy fashion, the road to emotional health and harmony can be a rocky one.Becoming a Family tackles this intricate issue head on. It provides parents with effective strategies for ensuring that their adopted child adjusts as quickly and seamlessly as possible. Practical and accessible, this book will help parents identify severe problems before the adoption, significantly reduce the risk of future difficulty, improve the damage already done to the child’s otherwise normal, healthy development, and dramatically help enfold the child into a family ready to give love, security, and a new life. |

Berlin $11.98 Transformer and “Walk on the Wild Side” were both major hits in 1972, to the surprise of both Lou Reed and the music industry, and with Reed suddenly a hot commodity, he used his newly won clout to make the most ambitious album of his career, Berlin. Berlin was the musical equivalent of a drug-addled kid set loose in a candy store; the album’s songs, which form a loose story line about a doomed romance between two chemically fueled bohemians, were fleshed out with a huge, boomy production (Bob Ezrin at his most grandiose) and arrangements overloaded with guitars, keyboards, horns, strings, and any other kitchen sink that was handy (the session band included Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Aynsley Dunbar, and Tony Levin). And while Reed had often been accused of focusing on the dark side of life, he and Ezrin approached Berlin as their opportunity to make The Most Depressing Album of All Time, and they hardly missed a trick. This all seemed a bit much for an artist who made such superb use of the two-guitars/bass/drums lineup with the Velvet Underground, especially since Reed doesn’t even play electric guitar on the album; the sheer size of Berlin ultimately overpowers both Reed and his material. But if Berlin is largely a failure of ambition, that sets it apart from the vast majority of Reed’s lesser works; Lou’s vocals are both precise and impassioned, and though a few of the songs are little more than sketches, the best — “How Do You Think It Feels,” “Oh, Jim,” “The Kids,” and “Sad Song” — are powerful, bitter stuff. It’s hard not to be impressed by Berlin, given the sheer scope of the project, but while it earns an A for effort, the actual execution merits more of a B-. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Blue Bombers: The True Story of the 2009 Little League World Champions $12.95 The 2009 Little League World Series champion Park View team from Chula Vista, California, smashed 104 round trippers during its electrifying twenty-six-game march to the flag, prompting the media to label them the Blue Bombers after the legendary New York Yankees’ Bronx Bombers. But these kids were much more than the sum of their home runs. The Blue Bombers chronicles the journey of twelve kids who learned to love and respect the game. The story begins with the singular vision of Rod Roberto, the Park View league president, who started with a core group of three kids and built a powerhouse from there. By the time the team won the championship, it had built a formidable bond that carried its players through thick and thin. In the process, they discovered that teamwork, focus, friendship, and having fun are every bit as important as winning a ball game, making them champions for all the right reasons. |

Breaking the Good Mom Myth: Every Mom’s Modern Guide to Getting Past Perfection, Regaining Sanity, and Raising Great Kids $18.95 As a psychotherapist, parent educator and parent coach, Alyson Schäfer has worked with a great many mothers who, in the quest to be a “good mother” have ended up on the door step of despair. Alyson is a forty-something, suburbanite, working-mother of two and can speak to these issues both personally and professionally. This book explains the psycho-social phenomena of how each person creates their own unique “good mother myth” and then examines why these myths are not only faulty, but could in fact lead to poor parenting, marital disaster and individual crisis. Her years of educating parents around these concepts afford Alyson the skill to take complex ideas and explain them to a lay audience in a compelling and easy to understand way. Capitalizing on the need to present parents with information in an easy to digest format, the book is presented as a series of personal stories, each highlighting a common parenting myth. This format will appeal to tired parents who have little time and energy for “academia”. Instead, readers learn by taking a voyeuristic peek into the private family lives of the book’s characters. Readers can identify with the fictitious parents and coaching clients in the stories and see first hand how the characters ’ life experiences shaped their unique “good mother myths” and how these myths create conflict in their lives. The author offers up ideas for how the character can reject her current thinking and adopt a more useful outlook to improve her situation. The story arc allows readers to identify and then project how their parenting may be unknowingly going off the rails. The goal of this book is to provide parents with some basiceducation and a means of self-discovery. Readers uncover their own good mother myths and are given an eye-opening glimpse into potential issues to challenge their thinking. A great sense of empowerment is restored as mothers become better able to resist the pulls of their personal and |
