Pop Music, Pop Culture By Rojek, Chris $35.05 What is happening to pop music and pop culture? Synthesizers, samplers and MDI systems have allowed anyone with basic computing skills to make music. Exchange is now automatic and weightless with the result that the High Street record store is dying. MySpace, Twitter and You Tube are now more important publicity venues for new bands than the concert tour routine. Unauthorized consumption in the form of illegal downloading has created a financial crisis in the industry. The old postwar industrial planningmodel of pop, which centralized control in the hands of major record corporations, and divided the market into neat segments, is dissolving in front of our eyes. This book offers readers a comprehensive guide to understanding pop music today. It provides a clear survey of the field and a description of core concepts. #3 [Bonus Tracks] $12.99 Like Beck in his ’90s prime, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names have no respect for musical boundaries. If they think a mixture of African-styled highlife-guitars, electronic beats, and ukuleles is a good idea for an indie pop song, they won’t hesitate to put it on record. The result? Wonderful. #3 includes former EP A-side “Funeral Face,” and just listen to the opening of “Peter’s Dream”: within mere seconds they combine Kraftwerk-styled percussion with a guitar that sounds exactly like Hank Marvin anno 1960, and it could hardly have sounded more right. On “Seems to Be on My Mind,” the distorted vocals and shuffly beat almost make them sound classic rock cool, before it breaks into a singalong chorus echoing the kind of pop like they used to make between the world wars. And so it goes on and on, genres and styles meet and ultimately converge through the unusually strong pop songwriting that always lies at the core of the album. No song gets boring, ever. Suburban Kids with Biblical Names sure do possess the geeky charm so beloved in indie and lo-fi circles. Classic one-liners like “there’s a Falcon Crest side to everything” and “I wanna turn all their dancefloors into a burning inferno of ba ba ba” are the stuff dreams are made of for any indie pop aficionado. But don’t let the spectacles and the wit fool you. There’s nothing amateurish about the kids’ performance at any point; in fact, the instrumental performances and the creative and crystal clear production are among the most impressive things about this album. Seldom do debut albums come as truly wonderful as this one. [The U.S. edition of the album adds two extra tracks: Love Will" and "Trumpets and Violins".] ~ Anders Kaasen, Rovi |

…Baby One More Time $12.99 At the beginning of the ’90s, teen currency shifted from bubblegum’n'Tiger Beat to grunge’n'Maximum Rock & Roll. Although it may have been pushed from the spotlight, teen pop hadn’t died — it, in a way, went underground, spending time on the fringes of pop culture. One of the leading lights of the exiled teen brigade was The New Mickey Mouse Club. For several years, it toiled away on the Disney Network, earning a small fan base — but, more importantly, providing a launchpad for several careers, including that of Britney Spears. Like her fellow NMMC alumni *N Sync, Spears shot to stardom in the late ’90s, just as she was on the verge of late adolescence. By that time, everything old was new again. Albums like her debut, …Baby One More Time, were topping the charts as if they were Hangin’ Tough, which is only appropriate since it sounded as if it could have been cut in 1989, not 1999. …Baby One More Time has the same blend of infectious, rap-inflected dance-pop and smooth balladry that propelled the New Kids and Debbie Gibson, due to the Backstreet Boys’ producer, Max Martin, who is also the mastermind behind Spears’ debut. He has a knack for catchy hooks, endearing melodies, and engaging Euro-dance rhythms, all of which are best heard on the hits: the ingenious title track, “Sometimes,” “(You Drive Me) Crazy,” and the utterly delightful, bubblegum-ragga album track “Soda Pop.” Like many teen pop albums, …Baby One More Time has its share of well-crafted filler, but the singles, combined with Britney’s burgeoning charisma, make this a pretty great piece of fluff. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

13 Going on 30 $14.99 13 Going on 30 — a romantic comedy about a misfit teen in 1987 who turns into a glamorous, successful adult in 2004 seemingly overnight — has a soundtrack that, appropriately enough, features 13 songs that span the ’80s to the 2000s. The album plays a little fast and loose with what a 13-year-old girl in 1987 would’ve actually listened to; three of the album’s best songs, the Go-Go’s’ “Head Over Heels,” Rick Springfield’s “Jesse’s Girl,” and Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House” are early-’80s classics, but seem like they’d be more likely found in the record collection of that 13-year-old’s older brother or sister. Similarly, Vanilla Ice’s 1990 guilty pleasure “Ice Ice Baby” comes from the years that the film’s heroine seems to have lost. Tracks from the first wave of boy bands, such as New Edition or New Kids on the Block, or college rock or synth pop from the soundtracks from any of the John Hughes films from the mid-’80s would’ve been more authentic, but nitpicking aside, songs like Madonna’s “Crazy for You,” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” and Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” do more or less capture the era. As for the 21st century artists, Ingram Hill’s “Will I Ever Make It Home” doesn’t make much of an impression, but Lillix’s cover of “What I Like About You” is serviceable, not as authentically gritty as the Donnas but a lot less sugary than the teen pop that usually appears on this kind of soundtrack. Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I?” — a song by a thirty-something carefully edited to appeal to 13-year-olds — captures the feeling of the soundtrack: knowing and maybe a little contrived, but sweet to listen to nevertheless. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

13 [Original Broadway Cast Recording] $26.98 If, in their very different ways, the Broadway musical Spring Awakening and the TV movie musical franchise High School Musical treated the subject of teenage concerns, the Broadway musical 13, with music by Jason Robert Brown, goes them one better, moving the focus earlier to the cusp of adolescence; you might call it “Junior High School Musical.” Featuring a cast entirely made up of teenagers, 13 tells the story of Evan Goldman (Graham Phillips), who is turning 13 just as his parents divorce and his mother moves him from the Upper West Side of Manhattan to a small town in Indiana. Evan’s goal is to fit in at Dan Quayle Junior High and get the coolest kids to attend his imminent bar mitzvah, which involves him in the budding romantic interests of those kids as well as the problems of his more natural comrades among the ordinary members of the student body. With a contemporary setting, 13 seems to call for the kind of contemporary teen pop music heard in High School Musical, but Brown’s take on what “contemporary pop” means seems to be ’70s pop/rock, not exactly what you’d expect kids born circa 1995 to be performing. Nevertheless, they do, even extending to creamy soul music in the manner of Philadelphia International Records (“Hey Kendra”) and reggae (“It Can’t Be True”). Brown also provides some traditional Broadway show music (“Terminal Illness”) and ’50s doo wop complete with piano triplets (“Opportunity”). But his basic idea of what 13 year olds in 2008 would be grooving to is catchy rock songs that include screaming (if usually brief) electric guitar solos. The music supports serviceable lyrics that trace the complicated ups and downs of early adolescent social interaction. Happily, those lyrics are sung by an earnest and talented cast whose members sound not far removed from the feelings the lyrics express. Still, 13 on disc comes off as a show that wasn’t really ready for Broadway. (A closing notice went up shortly before this album was releas… |

Archetypes and Repetition $12.99 Deepfield’s ambitious debut, Archetypes and Repetition, is the proverbial double-edged sword with its pluses held back at times by the very things that should move the quartet forward. Skidd Mills and Paul Ebersold certainly bring their reputation to the table but, like Phil Spector, their well-known “Wall of Sound” can also cloud a band’s abilities. “Get It,” as performed on this disc, sounds just like “44 Teeth,” when the two songs are completely different. It drops in so quickly that non-fans won’t be able to tell the difference between the two. Bob Ezrin knew how to pull those riffs out and let them rattle the speakers, but here the interesting guitar work of J. King and singer Baxter Teal III might as well be an outtake from Mills and Ebersold’s work on Saliva’s Survival of the Sickest. It is hard to distinguish the instruments with the quagmire of effects glossed over each title, a formula aimed at one audience, not many. Remember when there was the same exact guitar solo on a song on the New York Dolls’ 1973 debut and a song on Grand Funk’s We’re an American Band, also from 1973? Todd Rundgren was the producer on both, but at least all he did was clone a guitar sound/solo, not an entire group. A tremendous piece like “Fall Apart” gets shredded in this hollow sonic cavern. Now perhaps that is commercial for 2007 and maybe it will strike a chord with the kids tuned in to this high-end treble-heavy morass, but the distinctiveness found in classic rock/pop songs like “Gimme Shelter,” the Beatles’ “Revolution,” and the obvious prototype for this group, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” is missing in action. Oh for the days when a Clive Davis would let a bunch of name producers work on a Whitney Houston debut, garnering superb results. Butch Vig could have done wonders with “Into the Flood,” the imagery straight out of the latest Harry Potter movie — “I wanna write your name into my flesh…” — and going retro with Todd Rundgren on a song … |

At the Mall: Remixes $14.98 Recorded by college friends between 1988 and 1992, Baron Zen’s At the Mall sounds, well, a lot like something some music-loving kids would record between 1988 and 1992. The Joy Division, Black Flag, and Dead Milkmen influences are all there, as are the early hip-hop, pop, and even disco ones. It’s clearly music made by people who liked a lot of different styles (one of Baron Zen’s members, Chris Manak, aka DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, though he doesn’t show up on every song on the album — only Sweet Steve, the band’s songwriter and main performer, has that honor — went on to form the Stones Throw record label), and who have some fun toys (a four-track and drum machine, as well as a keyboard and some guitars) and a lot of free time. The covers of Joy Division’s “Walked in Line” and Debbie Deb’s “When I Hear Music” (which takes an almost industrial spin, and is actually pretty cool) are unpretentious and catchy, and the original pieces, albeit a little purposeless and messy, are guiltily enjoyable. Which means that although At the Mall isn’t a great record, it’s still a fun record; it’s about having a good time, not taking yourself seriously, hanging out with friends, and simple, fuzzy guitar riffs. No, the musicianship is not mind-blowing, the lyrics are not particularly inventive (an exception being “Shoes,” which has Sweet Steve rapping about how he loves the accessory “more than the behind of a female”), and the raw attitude and anger that often define the work of young male artists and make it exciting even when it’s lacking in other areas is instead replaced by a more suburban apathetic — or at least bored — view of the world, but somehow this renders it all the more charming. It’s a glimpse into the life of some college students having fun and making a little fun of themselves and things around them in the process, and it’s worth checking out. [Stones Throw issued a version of the album in 2007 that contained an extra disc of remixes.] ~ Marisa Brown, … |

Block $7.53 The brand new New Kids on the Block album was really sparked when Donnie Wahlberg was in New York for a costume fitting for the upcoming film Righteous Kill that finds him living out another life-long dream by acting in a film alongside two of his greatest heroes, Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino as well as 50 Cent. Finding himself around the block, Wahlberg visited the office of his longtime music lawyer who handed him a demo tape of a young singer-songwriter name Nazeree. Since the days of New Kids — and his time producing hits in the early Nineties for his brother Mark as Markey Mark and The Funky Bunch — Wahlberg has been handed a mountain of demos in his time and he took the offering with absolutely no expectations.Putting the CD on while driving a few days later, Wahlberg heard two songs that spoke to him powerfully. I got in the car in Boston on my birthday and I popped it in, he recalls. The first song was called Click, Click, Click and from the minute it started, it just grabbed me. I kept waiting for this kid to falter, but he never did. Not only that — I immediately recognized that Joey McIntryre is going to love this record, Jordan Knight is going to love this record and I love this record. The music speaks to all of our sensibilities, but they’re all totally different. It was hip-hop and honest enough for me. It was soulful enough for Jordan and pop and unselfish enough for Joe. It just had it all. I spent the next few hours driving up to girls at red lights and playing them the song. They said, Is that your song?’ I said Not yet.’ |

Carnavas $13.98 Carnavas, the debut full-length from L.A.’s Silversun Pickups, is the sort of record that brings something new to discover with each listen. Thus, listen one is as enjoyable as listen five or ten, but probably for entirely different reasons, since unique bits continuously appear from the band’s dream haze of accessibly textured indie rock. From the grainy opening of “Melatonin” that blends into strikingly harmonized male/female vocals, the quartet immediately showcases their innate sense of melody amid textured atmospherics and layers of distortion and fuzz, which all come across as both bittersweet and enchanting. Silversun Pickups take the shimmering dream pop of My Bloody Valentine and filter it through ’90s grunge instincts like that of the Smashing Pumpkins — and it all combines to produce an album that, well, is really freaking good. Vocals are both haunting and sweet, as lead singer Brian Aubert somehow manages to sound like a cross between the Goo Goo Dolls’ Robby Takac and the Get Up Kids’ Matt Pryor — in a good way. And for every moment of ominous intensity, the band further manipulates their ethereal antics into moments of pure shimmering redemption. “Future Foe Scenarios” is urgent in a completely controlled way that makes the vocals come off even fiercer over the song’s driving distortion, while exhilarating and spacious cuts like “Lazy Eye” and “Common Reactor” materialize out of clouds of hazy guitars and pensive keyboard with dynamic force that never loses its direction. Though an extremely rewarding listen, proceed with caution: once put into a stereo, Carnavas may become stuck inside for quite a while. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi |

Charlie Last Name Wilson $8.98 As the lead singer of brotherly trio the Gap Band, the pioneering group whose late 70’s early 80’s funk still serves as a guiding light for producers and singers, it has been a long road for Charlie Wilson. From the dusty roads of Tulsa, Okalahoma to the neon lights of Cali to being homeless in the city of angels, the brother has seen it all. I went from riches to rags, Charlie laughs. But now it’s time for me to take it back to the stage with Charlie, Last Name Wilson. From day one, R. Kelly has always proclaimed himself a modern day Charlie Wilson, he says. He and I have been talking about collaborating for years, and now it’s finally happening. On Charlie, Last Name Wilson, his first disc since 2001, the former cowboy boot wearing bro is now gator stepping in Chi-town with the king of urban grooves. This was a big step for me, because the Gap band always did our own music, Wilson recalls. Letting others write and produce for me, is a big step. Fortunately, coming through on his promise, R. Kelly has stepped to the plate to produce four mackadelic tracks. The first song we recorded was the title track. I already knew he was talented, but it was then I realized he’s a genius. With his own classic appeal, Charlie Wilson possess a style that has never gone out of style, the kind of voice that can be gutbucket and cool, smooth as hot butter and tasty as chocolate. Charlie, Last Name Wilson is the kind of urban romancer that will appeal to both old souls hanging in the spot and R&B kids chilling on the block. The instant classic No Words, is an exquisite track that has an eternal pop sound comparable to Burt Bacharach, Curtis Mayfield or Babyface. With this enchanting song, sonic Chicago architect R. Kelly has constructed one of the finest drama ballads of his career. That is my favorite song, because it’s so powerful, Charlie says. Basically, it’s me singing from the woman’s perspective. I know some men are going to be mad that I’m |

Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of the Crystals $12.99 When Phil Spector formed his own label, Philles Records, in 1961, he had written, played guitar, and sung backup vocals on 1958? s ? To Know Him Is to Love Him? (which hit the top of the pop charts that year) as part of the Teddy Bears, and worked for a time as part of the production team for Leiber & Stoller, co-writing ? Spanish Harlem? for Ben E. King and playing guitar on the Drifters’ ? On Broadway,? and had produced minor sides for LaVern Baker and Ruth Brown, among others, but there was really little to distinguish him from any number of other hopefuls clustered around the pop music scene at the time. But Spector was driven, single-minded, and stubborn, and he had a sound in his head. Now with his own label in place, he set out to record a series of singles he termed ? little symphonies for the kids? that are now regarded among the most distinctive and influential recordings in the history of pop music. Combining massed pianos, guitars, string arrangements by Jack Nitzsche, tons of layered percussion, and huge washes of echo, working with the West Coast? s best session players (including Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Larry Knechtel, Leon Russell, and Harold Battiste — the so-called Wrecking Crew), and leaning heavily on his engineer Larry Levine to catch all of this in the small confines of Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, Spector developed his ? Wall of Sound? production approach, controlling every aspect of the recordings until, even though he wasn? t singing or even playing an instrument, they became — in essence — Phil Spector records. This is not to diminish the singers he used — the Crystals, in the case here. Already an intact quartet led by vocalists La La Brooks and Barbara Alston when they fell into Spector’s world, he ended up owning the Crystals name and inserting other vocalists — most notably Darlene Love — into the equation whenever it suited him. One can say, that? s the music business, and Spector was far from a huma… |

Dragon Tales 2-Lets Share/Lets Play $9.99 Includes five favorite Dragon Tales, including Quetzal’s Magic Pop-Up Book: Quetzal pulls out his special magic book that allows the kids and dragons to go inside its blank pages where they can create and become part of tales that come to life just by thinking about them. Once inside, however, all start thinking different thoughts at once and chaos ensues. Zak derails Emmy’s wild jungle adventure with his leisurely tea party, which is then interrupted by a humongous watermelon that Ord conjures up. They soon realize that by taking turns, everyone’s story gets to be heard. The Fury Is Out On This One: Max is it in a competitive game of Dragon Tag. He races around in hot pursuit of the other but they delight in remaining just out of reach. He gets angry, hurls a pinecone-like pod and out pops fury, an intimidating little man with steam rising from his head. The madder Max gets, the bigger (and happier) Fury becomes…until his Dragon friends teach him a few tricks to let off some steam. Much Ado About Nothing: Max ignores Cassie’s warnings to watch out for Nodlings in the grass and accidentally drives his toy bulldozer into a wagon the tiny Nodling gnomes are using to gather mushtrees. Initially Max is reluctant to take responsibility, but as he and the gang try various ways to fix the situation and none of them work, he begins to feel bad and becomes determined to do the right thing. He offers the trailer from his bulldozer as a replacement, and everyone is happy. Four Little Pigs: Max and Emmy decide to put on a puppet show in Dragon Land. They choose to act out Three Little Pigs, and Ord, Max and Cassie offer to play the pigs. Emmy wants to be the wolf, but so do Zak and Wheezie, who are tired of always having to provide the music. They don’t want to play if they can’t be the world, so they leave. Quibbling Siblings: Zak is excited about trying to find a rare Jugglebug for school sharing time. But Wheezie’s being a rea |
