is this a good game design school?
so i want to go to college with a game designing major, and was looking at becker college.. the princeton review or whatever says its the #4 school for that major! I’m reading the major description: “The Game Design course curriculum offers a foundation of traditional drawing, illustration, and art courses in addition to courses in 2D and 3D animation, audio, storytelling, character development, and game technology. The Game Design student also develops skills in scriptwriting, computer programming, animation, project management and online media production. Students learn industry-related software such as: Gamemaker, Flash, Maya, and the complete suite of Adobe design software products.”, and I’m wondering, are those listed software what i SHOULD be learning? like adobe design/flash? I’ve never heard of the other ones but I feel like video games are made with… other software? Would this be a good school? Anyone go there??
Don’t study for any degree containing the words “game Design” in its title. These degrees get no respect and are only taken by students destined to live in their parents’ basements until middle age.
Game design/programming is rapidly going off-shore, where good designers/programmers can be hired for $3/hr.
Instead of Game Design, you should get a good general (flexible) degree in Software Engineering Technology or Computer Engineering Technology.

Storytelling $3.99 As in his earlier screenplays, Todd Solondz peers deeply into the underside of American suburban life and concerns in Storytelling, with sometimes shocking, sometimes hilarious, results. The film is in two parts: “Fiction” deals with the relationship between students and their black teacher in a college creative writing class while hammering away in decidedly non-PC fashion at the most sensitive social and political concerns of our time: race, sex, prejudice against the disabled. “Nonfiction” follows the attempts of an underachieving documentary filmmaker to capture the day-to-day life of an underachieving high-school student and his family – with surprisingly horrifying results. The film – which stars John Goodman and Julie Hagerty as the parents in the second part of the movie – caused something of a sensation when it was first shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2001. |

Interactive Storytelling $74.88 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Interactive storytelling is a form of computer entertainment in which players take on the role of a protagonist in a dramatic storyline. The term was coined by Chris Crawford, a main proponent and developer. Interactive storytelling and interactive fiction are distinct in that interactive storytelling focuses on drama and dynamic circumstances, whereas interactive fiction traditionally (but not necessarily) focusses on puzzlesolving and navigating through pre conceived circumstances. Wellwritten examples of both should be nonlinear. Conversational Storytelling $151.35 Sharing stories or personal experiences in everyday conversation may constitute the basis for all storytelling activities including telling folk tales, legends, fictive stories, or even writing novels, plays, and films. This book analyzes firstperson narratives in the everyday interactions of speakers of Japanese. Most of the data come from several dozen hours of taperecorded conversations. This study discusses the thematic organization of the stories, their social functions, and the use of tense and aspect in narratives. It aims at establishing the links between linguistic strategies, and cognitive and contextual processes, as well as testing the crosslinguistic and crosscultural validity of existing findings in narrative studies of storytelling practices in English among other languages. Thus, this book provides useful information for students and specialists of tense and aspect, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, narratology, cognitive linguistics, literary study, as well as teachers of Japanese and English, and anyone interested in storytelling and language. The Semantics of Storytelling. $115.71 This thesis documents the concept, installation and intentions of my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Television Will Save Us All. This document includes a statement regarding the construction and installation of Television Will Save Us All as well as a discussion of this works relation to my larger body of art and the social context in which I work. The installation of Television Will Save Us All, as well as the ideas expressed in this thesis are an exploration of the imperfection of communication, and the causes those imperfections have on our perception of the world around us. I create art that is intended to call into question the source of information more than its expressed meaning. In order to achieve this it is often necessary to create an experience for the intended viewer that will bring them to a conclusion rather than to communicate the idea directly. The Politics of Storytelling $119.48 First Nations literature is a rather new field of literature, which was recognized as a distinct literary category only in the mid 20th century. Since then, First Nations authors have tried to work against stereotypical images about themselves by means of writing and have aimed at a more authentic portrayal of indigenous peoples from a Native point of view. The study puts its focus on two prevalent themes that can often be found in First Nations literature; firstly, the portrayal of political activism that constitutes a rebellion against government policies; and secondly, the quest for identity of the protagonist, which happens in relation with the Native community and the homeland. Although the novels differ greatly in the genres, styles and structures applied, the themes mentioned are central in all three works of fiction. This means that the novels all comment on the influence politics has had on the lives of Natives and illustrate that it is important to come to terms with cultural traditions in order to find ones own identity as a Native person. The Importance of Storytelling in Todays Business $109.93 In todays business there is an abundance of tools for communication to use. They all, however, contain a common denominator they are all trying to tell a story or even several stories. In this work we investigate how one company can communicate and manage its brand identity through the implementation of storytelling. Theories, mainly from Aaker and Kapferer have been used to investigate brand identity. Based on theoretical and empirical material about storytelling we have found key issues of the notion of storytelling. These materials involve discussions about the concept of storytelling, its area of application and how stories should be structured and also which aspects are important for this process. This work should therefore be especially useful for professionals in Communications and Marketing fields, or anyone else who are interested in communications and storytelling from a marketing perspective. Stories reveal. Stories motivate. Stories bind individuals into teams. Stories create solutions. Digital Storytelling as a Tool for Revision. $115.71 The purpose of this study was to discover whether Digital Storytelling influenced participants to make substantive meaning altering revisions in their writing. This study also explored the influence that digital images have on the quality of participants Digital Stories. The participants were four middle school students invited to attend a summer writing clinic at a midwestern university. The study used a qualitative case study design. Data were collected from multiple sources: written drafts, revision conferences, field observations, interview questionnaires, storyboards, and iMovies. Results indicated that at the beginning of the study the participants had a shallow understanding of revision. Essentially, they viewed revision as the correction of minor writing faults. At the conclusion of the study, however, the participants used three major revision operations: adding, deleting, and rearranging story elements as they wrote their Digital Stories. It was found that storyboarding and iMovie making, in particular, influenced writers to engage in substantive meaning altering revision of their Digital Stories. It was also found that incorporating digital images into their Digital Stories had an important influence on the quality of participants writing. In the Presence of Each Other: A Pedagogy of Storytelling $30.99 There can be little doubt that pedagogical practices have increasingly become focused on reading and writing in childhood education. In the Presence of Each Other is a brilliant ethnography that examines the educational benefits of the use of oral storytelling in the classroom and the ways in which non-print literacy enhances children’s overall language and communication capacities. Presenting a strong argument based on compelling evidence for the incorporation of oral practices in the classroom, Johanna Kuyvenhoven follows a group of children in grades four and five as they forge an inclusive learning environment that respects linguistic, social, and ethnic diversity by sharing stories out loud. She traces the positive effects that oral storytelling has on children’s vocabularies, writing skills, as well as for problem-solving abilities and empathetic responses that are essential to learning across the disciplines. In the Presence of Each Other is a ground-breaking work not only for educators but also for anyone interested in the practice of storytelling. |

Bringing the Outside In: Visual Ways to Engage Reluctant Readers $7.91 The reading that we value in school is becoming further and further distanced from the literacy students experience in their outside lives. Inside the classroom, we ask our students to immerse themselves in print texts and write purposefully. Once out the door, they are text-messaging, blogging, engaging in online multi-player games, and expertly integrating words, images, and music to create original texts. Can we import these textual spaces and literacies into English class to help re-connect students who don’t see themselves as readers and writers?English educator Sara Kajder’s answer is an emphatic “yes,” and in Bringing the Outside In she demonstrates myriad ways to employ students’ outside talents in the classroom. Drawing on multiple examples of student work, she shows how she adapts the curriculum to incorporate an expanded definition of literacy and literacy tools. Sara offers teachers guidance on how to extend their repertoire of teaching strategies, and help kids connect their natural curiosity and skills as readers and writers of both print and electronic texts, while keeping reading and writing at the center of the curriculum.Keying in on the visual aspects of literacy, and building upon students’ growing interest in using words and images from their lives to read and write for authentic reasons and authentic audiences—integrating such strategies as digital storytelling, visual think-alouds, visual literature circles, and others into English class—Sara and her kids redefine what it means to be literate in today’s world. By adding visual components to class activities and projects integrating tools ranging from pencils and paper to “weblogs” and “wikis,” even reluctant students can become engaged and see themselves as readers and writers for the first time. |

Cliff Johnson Games: The Fool’s Errand, 3 in Three, the Fool and His Money, at the Carnival, $100,000 Challenge, Disney’s Cartoon Arcade $8.59 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Fool’s Errand is a 1987 computer game by Cliff Johnson. It is a meta-puzzle game with storytelling, visual puzzles and a cryptic treasure map. It is the tale of a wandering Fool who seeks his fortune in the Land of Tarot and braves the enchantments of the High Priestess. According to Johnson, a sequel, titled The Fool and His Money, is scheduled for release sometime after October 2010. The game was originally written for the Apple Macintosh and ported to MS-DOS, Commodore Amiga and Atari ST. The ports add color, but in a lower resolution (320×200, as opposed to the original version’s 512×342). Johnson’s site advises PC-based players to download the Macintosh version and play using an emulator, specifically mentioning Executor, but other open source emulators will work as well. The non-Macintosh versions of the game were protected by a symbol-based code wheel. The version offered free of charge given by the author has this mechanism disabled: the challenge screen still appears, but any answer is accepted. Computer Gaming World had high praise for the game, saying “You feel like you’re matching wits with the author directly, instead of playing “hunt the parser.”" The Fool’s Errand won the following awards: The game is structured as a storybook divided into five parts, each containing a large number of different chapters; the storybook can be paged through and read as continuous prose on screen. However, not every chapter is available at the start of the game, and those chapters which are available are not consecutive. Many chapters have a puzzle (called an enchantment) associated with them; completing such a puzzle unlocks further chapter(s). Every chapter is either named after a tarot card in the Major Arcana or a name giv… More: |

Don Quixote $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: (Spanish: (·); English: , see spelling and pronunciation below), fully titled The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: ), is a novel written by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes created a fictional origin for the story by inventing a Moorish chronicler for Don Quixote named Cide Hamete Benengeli. Published in two volumes a decade apart (in 1605 and 1615), Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. Don Quijote by Honoré Daumier (1868)The novel’s structure is in episodic form. It is written in the picaresco style of the late sixteenth century. The full title is indicative of the tale’s object, as ingenioso (Spanish) means “to be quick with inventiveness”. Although the novel is farcical on the surface, the second half is more serious and philosophical about the theme of deception. Quixote has served as an important thematic source not only in literature but in much of art and music, inspiring works by Pablo Picasso and Richard Strauss. The contrasts between the tall, thin, fancy-struck, and idealistic Quixote and the fat, squat, world-weary Panza is a motif echoed ever since the books publication, and Don Quixote’s imaginings are the butt of outrageous and cruel practical jokes in the novel. Even faithful and simple Sancho is unintentionally forced to deceive him at certain points. The novel is considered a satire of orthodoxy, truth, veracity, and even nationalism. In going beyond mere storytelling to exploring the individualism of his characters, Cervantes helped move beyond the narrow literary conv… |

Essays in Literary Criticism: A Reader’s Manifesto, Proust, the Monsters and the Critics $7.7 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: A Reader’s Manifesto is a 2002 book written by B. R. Myers that was originally published in heavily edited form in the July/August 2001 issue of The Atlantic Monthly magazine. Myers criticizes the high status of literary fiction compared to genre fiction; he finds literary fiction full of affectations and pretentious wordplay but lacking in strong storytelling. Myers described the original article, which saw no end of responses from admirers and critics, as “a light-hearted polemic” about modern literature. Myers was particularly concerned with what he saw as the growing pretentiousness of American literary fiction. He was skeptical about the value of elaborate, allusive prose and argued that what was praised as good writing was in fact the epitome of bad writing. His critique concentrated on E. Annie Proulx, Cormac McCarthy, Paul Auster, David Guterson, and Don DeLillo, all of whom enjoyed substantial acclaim from the literary establishment. Myers directed many of his harshest charges at literary critics for prestigious publications such as the New York Times Book Review, whom he accused of lavishing praise upon bad writing either for political reasons, or because they did not understand it and therefore assumed it to have great artistic merit. Myers also focuses on what he calls “the cult of the sentence”, criticizing critics for pulling single sentences out of novels in order to praise their brilliance, while ignoring shortcomings in the novel as a whole. Myers’ article attracted heated criticism from aficionados of American literary fiction, especially of the authors Myers mentioned by name. Some critics charged Myers with being selective in his choice of targets, and of cherry picking particularly unreadable passages fr… More: |

Chapters: Big Fish, Frankenfish, Honeydripper, Small Town Gay Bar, the Grass Harp, Selma, Lord, Selma, Death Ship, the Story of Bonnie and Clyde, the Rosa Parks Story, 20 Years After. Excerpt: Big Fish is a 2003 American fantasy comedy-drama based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Daniel Wallace. The film was directed by Tim Burton and stars Albert Finney, Ewan McGregor, Billy Crudup, and Jessica Lange. Finney plays Edward Bloom, a former traveling salesman from the Southern United States with a gift for storytelling, now confined to his deathbed. Bloom’s estranged son, a journalist played by Crudup, attempts to mend their relationship as his dying father relates tall tales of his eventful life as a young adult, played by Ewan McGregor. Screenwriter John August read a manuscript of the novel six months before it was published and convinced Columbia Pictures to acquire the rights. August began adapting the novel while producers negotiated with Steven Spielberg who planned to direct after finishing Minority Report (2002). Spielberg considered Jack Nicholson for the role of Edward Bloom, but eventually dropped the project to focus on Catch Me If You Can (2002). Tim Burton and Richard D. Zanuck took over after completing Planet of the Apes (2001) and brought Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor on board. The film’s theme of reconciliation between a dying father and his son had special significance for Burton, as his father had died in 2000 and his mother in 2002, a month before he signed on to direct. Big Fish was shot on location in Alabama in a series of fairy tale vignettes evoking the tone of a Southern Gothic fantasy. The film received award nominations in multiple film categories, including four Golden Globe nominations, seven nominations from the Br… More: |

Excerpt: All the Pretty Horses is a 2000 film, directed by Billy Bob Thornton and based on the novel of the same title by American author Cormac McCarthy . It stars Matt Damon and Penélope Cruz .Plot summary The movie tells the story of John Grady Cole (Matt Damon), a sixteen year old cowboy, and his best friend Lacey Rawlins (Henry Thomas ), crossing the border to move south to Mexico .They encounter, among others, a young boy named Jimmy Blevins (Lucas Black ), whom they befriend, and a young aristocrat’s daughter, Alejandra Villarreal (Penélope Cruz), with whom John Grady Cole falls in love. In Mexico he becomes disillusioned by the atrocities of the world.Editing After Billy Bob Thornton completed his cut (said to be somewhere between three and four hours) producer/distributor Harvey Weinstein forced him to cut more than one hour out of it. Peter Biskind suggests in Down and Dirty Pictures that this was at least partially done as payback for Thornton’s refusal to cut Sling Blade down. In the end, Thornton was forced to cut the film down, which had an impact on the storytelling. Matt Damon was publicly critical of this decision, saying to Entertainment Weekly , “You can’t cut 35 % of the movie and expect it to be the same movie.”Some attempts have been made to release a director’s cut DVD, but arrangements can not be reached with the original composer, Daniel Lanois . Meanwhile, others seek to exploit this vast shadow economy, running electronic sweatshops in the world’s poorest countries, where countless “gold farmers,” bound to their work by abusive contracts and physical threats, harvest virtual treasure for their employers to sell to First World gamers who are willing to spend real money to skip straight to higher-level gameplay.Mala is a brilliant 15-year-old from rural India whose leadership skills in virtual combat have earned her the title of “General Robotwalla.” In Shenzen, heart of China’s industrial boom, Matthew is defying his former bosses to build his own successful gold-farming team. Leonard, who calls himself Wei-Dong, lives in Southern California, but spends his nights fighting virtual battles alongside his buddies in Asia, a world away. All of these young people, and more, will become entangled with the mysterious young woman called Big Sister Nor, who will use her experience, her knowledge of history, and her connections with real-world organizers to build them into a movement that can challenge the status quo.The ruthless forces arrayed against them are willing to use any means to protect their power—including blackmail, extortion, infiltration, violence, and even murder. To survive, Big Sister’s people must out-think the system. This will lead them to devise a plan to crash the economy of every virtual world at once—a Ponzi scheme combined with a brilliant hack that ends up being the biggest, funnest game of all.
