Song of Songs $38 “The most intimate of all human relationships, according to the Bible, is that between a husband and a wife. It is not surprising, therefore, that there is a book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, that focuses on this relationship. What is surprising is how little attention is given to the Song of Songs by scholars, by the church, and by readers of the Bible. With this volume, however, Tremper Longman III has written a fine commentary on the Song of Songs, unpacking for modern people what this ancient love poem says about the male-female relationship — and, by analogy, about God’s love for his people.>Longman’s superb study begins with a thorough introduction to the Song of Songs and its background. Longman discusses the book’s title, authorship, date, literary style, language, structure, cultural milieu, and theological content. He also canvasses the long history of interpretation of the Song of Songs, a history too often characterized by repression of the text. In the commentary itself, Longman structures the Song of Songs according to its twenty-three poetic units and explains its message verse by verse. The exposition is made clearer by Longman’s adoption of an anthropological approach to the text and by his frequent comparisons of the Song of Songs with other ancient Near Eastern literature.>Learned yet highly accessible, innovative yet fully informed by past scholarship, this commentary shows the beautiful Song of Songs to be a timeless celebration of human love and sexuality.” |

Songs of the Spirit $11.99 “”Songs of the Spirit” is a compilation of poetry that chronicles the personal experiences and spiritual growth of author, Lee Ann Mardel, over a span of twenty-five years. Originally intended as a private journal, her pieces have evolved into a book, addressing the joys, struggles and concerns common in everyday life. From the author’s thoughts on family to her words about her relationship with God, the reader will find each piece steeped in passion and meaning. Through a simplistic and straightforward style of writing, the author takes the reader with her on a spiritual journey. In the end these poems remind us that good can be found in the worst situations if you look for it, God uses everything to the betterment of His divine plan, He is working to have a personal relationship with you even when you aren’t… He is ever-present and always faithful. Marriage, motherhood, divorce, the deaths of loved ones, work outside the home and the search for fulfillment are just some of the experiences, which Lee Ann Mardel shares with the common woman. All of her positive and less-than-positive situations and relationships have been invaluable teachers in her understanding of life’s true treasures. While marking off the years, Lee Ann spent countless hours seeking to fill the void in her life, struggling to find greater meaning and purpose. Without realizing the direction God was moving her, she discovered that the sum total of her life had given her insight into what she maintains was her missing piece. In fact, that missing piece was an understanding of the meaning of life. She found it in the development of a personal relationship with God and in the understanding of His unwavering love. Withthat awareness she also found a sense of contentment and release.” |

Ecclesiastes Song Of Songs $29.99 “The NIV Application Commentary Ecclesiastes/Song of Songs. Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs have always presented particular challenges to their readers, especially if those readers are seeking to understand them as part of Christian Scripture. Ecclesiastes regularly challenges the reader as to grammar and syntax. The interpretation even of words which occur frequently in the book is often unclear and a matter of dispute, partly because there is frequent word-play in the course of the argument. The argument is itself complex and sometimes puzzling and has often provoked the charge of inconsistency or outright self-contradiction. When considered in the larger context of the OT, Ecclesiastes stands out as an unusual book, whose connection with the main stream of biblical tradition seems tenuous. We find ourselves apparently reading about the meaninglessness of life and the certainty of death in a universe in which God is certainly present but is distant and somewhat uninvolved. When considered in the context of the NT, the dissonance between Ecclesiastes and its scriptural context seems even greater; for if there is one thing that we do not find in this book, it is the joy of resurrection. Perhaps this is one reason why Ecclesiastes is seldom read or preached on in modern churches. The Song of Songs (also known as the Song of Solomon) has been read, historically, by Christians, in two primary ways – as a text which concerns the love and sexual intimacy of human beings and as a text which uses the language of human love and intimacy to speak of something else – the relationship between Christ and the church. Christians have often felt that they must choose between these options – that a text about human love and sexual intimacy could not be at the same time a spiritual text. It is one of the challenges of reading the Song to explore how far this is necessarily true and how far Christian readers have been influenced in their reading more by Platonism and Gnosticism than by biblical thinking about the nature of the human being and of human sexuality. Another challenge is to discover whether the Song is really one “song” at all, or simply a haphazard collection of shorter poems cast together because of their common theme of love; and still another is to gain clarity on what, precisely, is the connection between the Song and Solomon.” |

Weary Throats And New Songs $25.5 “Examines the rich heritage of African American women who have proclaimed–and still proclaim–God’s word. Against all odds, African American women have passionately proclaimed the goodness of God and lifted up Jesus’ name despite barriers of race, class, denomination, education and gender. In response to a sense of deliverance from evil and in gratitude for answered prayers, these women have related their faith and trust in God in sacred places such as ships, fields, homes, barns, factories, hospitals, schools, pulpits, missionary societies, and over kitchen sinks. Even when disenfranchised in the religious communities they helped create, African American women continue to “say a word” about God, whether they are ordained or not. This book provides a brief review of the rich heritage of African American female proclaimers and examines contemporary African American women’s sermon preparation, content, delivery, and personhood. Brown draws heavily on interviews and conversations, as well as audio and video tapes of women proclaiming God’s word to relate how and why African American women tell others about God despite resistance (weary throats) and with the help of support (new songs) in religious and social communities.” |

Songs $9.99 “This 1996 collection of Rich Mullins’s finest work is a must-have for any Christian-music fan. A quick glance at the song list will make one marvel over the significant influence this masterful songwriter has in the CCM world. “Sing Your Praise to the Lord,” Mullins’s first recorded work, helped launch Amy Grant’s superstar career. “Awesome God” has become an anthem sung by youth in many churches in America. But let’s not forget the plaintive “Calling Out Your Name” or “Hold Me Jesus,” two oft-covered numbers that further testify to Mullins’s genius. The praise-and-worship theme that flows throughout Songs aptly captures the sincere spirit of this well-missed man.” |

Songs of the Servant: Isaiah’s Good News $8.95 “”He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.” As part of the last of four great poems known as the “Servant Songs,” these familiar words were first uttered by a lonely prophet to Jewish exiles in mighty Babylon: to folk who were convinced that their tiny, storm-tossed nation had been forgotten by its God. To them Isaiah brings a message of hope, telling of a mysterious “Servant of the Lord” who suffers beyond human endurance for sins which he did not commit, yet who lives again to witness the deliverance of those for whom he died. What were these people to make of this strange figure? Who was Isaiah speaking about? And, centuries later, who gave the New Testament writers the idea that these prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus Christ? Henri Blocher is Knoedler Professor of Systematic Theology at Wheaton College, Illinois, and Professor of Systematic Theology at the Faculte Libre de Theologie Evangelique in Vaux-sur-Seine, France. His other books include In the Beginning, Songs of the Servant and Original Sin: Illuminating the Riddle.” |

What The Bible Teaches About Marriage $11.99 “There is no question that our world today suffers from high divorce rates, rampant sexual promiscuity and a free and easy attitude to relationships. While we can blame the presence of sin as a reason for this, it does not wholly explain why many Christians seem to struggle with the same sexual and marital problems as the world. In the belief that this is partly due to the failure of the church to instruct its people about the true nature of redeemed relationships, Anthony Selvaggio takes a thoroughly biblical and immensely practical look at the topics of human sexuality, romance and marriage, as they are revealed in the Song of Songs. It is his desire that marriages will be restored and enriched as we examine this picture of the divine love of God expressed in the greatest love of all, the Lord Jesus Christ.” |

Romance of the Ages: Meditations on the Song of Songs $15.99 “This devotional book is written in the tradition of such excellent commentaries as those by Watchman Nee, H. A. Ironside, C. A. Coates, and E. C. Hadley. Mrs. McPhee was the mother of Margaret Jean Tuininga, whose children’s books have been fruitful and edifying. Mrs. McPhee delivers on her intention to help those who seem locked out from this tremendous portion of God’s Word. Very few have known such intimacy with their Lord, so that they could venture to speak very much about Solomon’s Song. Mrs. McPhee was one of those few. For a generation swimming in sensuality, this book sparkles and gleams with the pure air of heaven. ?John Bjorlie” |

When Songs Are Forbidden: The True Story of a Childrens Choir in Romania $12.99 “When Songs are Forbidden the True Story of a Childrens Choir in Romania is about a famous childrens choir I started which dared to sing praises to God during the cruel dictatorship of Nicolae Ceauescu. Part One describes how I grow up in a poor family and suffer persecution at school. I have many troubles and am later expelled from the university for my testimony. I live in semihiding in a church for seven years and there I listen to foreign broadcasts by night and compose words to the tunes. They become childrens songs and spread like fire at a time when writing Christian songs is a crime. In Part Two the reader meets the children in the choir as we travel all over the country, singing forbidden songs in praise of the God of the Bible. We have many adventures together and the Lord often turns trouble into laughter. The children shine for the Lord as they tell their own stories of courage in face of persecution. As the leader of the choir, my life is in danger from the secret police. The Lord uses Jimmy Carter to rescue me from Romania and I receive political asylum in the United States. This book will inspire Christian children and teenagers everywhere to serve the Lord.” |

But what if those who wield the power have an agenda of their own? Rev. Lester claims to receive messages from God. Angel is a rock star who has been cheered and ridiculed to the point of persecution because of his own claims to hear the voice of God. Lester proclaims that God has demanded a New Crusade, first against Islam and second, against the Godless leaders of the Untied States. One man steps up to lead this New Crusade, and with that, the evil is unleashed. A secret army begins training in a remote location, and begins to wreak havoc. Angel, meanwhile, is planning a comeback. His life has been in danger, and now things have escalated to the point of possible fanatical attack at every turn. The scariest part about this book is that it could very well happen. Jones reaches out to the world through his books, with a message of tolerance and understanding, and with a very exciting, relevant, and intriguing story. Infinite Playlists: How to Have Conversations (Not Conflict) with Your Kids about Music $9.99 “>With the easy availability and abundance of downloadable music and MP3 players, almost every teenager knows exactly how to find their favorite bands and songs online. Recent studies show that more than 50 percent of teens own their own iPod and even more search for music on iTunes. A world of influence is at their fingertips, so how and when should Christian parents monitor the music their children are listening to without creating undue conflict and argument? For author Todd Stocker, the day his son asked his preference between Van Halen and Def Leppard was the day he realized he and his son needed to have the “music talk.” >Infinite Playlists is a handy guide to healthy conversation between parents and kids. Writing as both father and music-lover, Stocker calls parents to recognize music as a gift from God so they can help their kids determine the emotional, physical, and spiritual influences of their song choices. He offers a balanced look at the difference between Christian and secular music, and gives practical guidelines parents and kids can follow to choose appropriate music-together. >Competing titles may try to convince parents to hate or reject secular music or, alternately, convince them that Christian music is the only way to go. Infinite Playlists does neither, seeking first to provide parents with an understanding of God’s purpose for music, then to provide biblical and respectful guidelines to aid responsible music choices. Ultimately, the goal is healthy conversation-not conflict-between parents and children so everyone can see and appreciate what music can teach us about life, about God, about others, about relationships, and about the world.” |

Unprotected Texts: The Bible’s Surprising Contradictions about Sex and Desire $25.99 “> Bible scholar Jennifer Wright Knust addresses the big questions that dominate today’s discussions and debates when it comes to sex and the Bible: Is premarital sex a sin? When, and in what contexts, is sexual desire appropriate? With whom can I legitimately have sex? Are same-sex relations permissible? In an era where the phrases, “the Bible says,” and “God says,” are so often exploited, it is time to consider what the Bible actually does–or does not–say about monogamy, polygamy, homosexuality, gender roles, and sex. > “Unprotected Texts” directly and pointedly takes on widely shared misconceptions about sex, arguing that the Bible cannot–and should not–serve as a rulebook for sexual morality, despite popular claims to the contrary. From the Song of Songs’ lyrical eroticism to the rigid sexual rules of Leviticus–and everything in between–Knust parses the Bible’s contradictory, often surprising messages. > Skillfully revealing the latest insights from critical scholarship, Knust provides a compassionate and liberating model for navigating these deeply personal issues that affect us all.” |

Some writers wrote more; others wrote less. nbsp; But what if we could read it as one single story from beginning to end This book does just that by combining the four reports of Jesusrsquo; life into a single chronological story.nbsp;Through this book you will take a new look at Jesus his life his miracles and his teachings and be able to come to your own conclusion about him.nbsp;Produced in cooperation with the International Bible Society.” |

Solomon’s Song of Love: Let a Song of Songs Inspire Your Own Love Story $17.95 “One of the most beautiful and mysterious books of the Bible is laid open for all to understand in this unparalleled work by Dr. Craig Glickman. With apparent ease, Glickman unveils the mysteries of the Song of Solomon in a popular-read format. But the surface simplicity is backed up by a lifetime of study and scholarship, three special appendices, and interpretive notes that validate his interpretation. Also included is a fresh translation of the Song published in this book for the first time. Initial readers of this book offer resounding praise. This book is “the most fascinating book I have ever read about the Song,” says Dr. Henry Cloud. Old Testament scholars praise it as an academic breakthrough: “clear, cogent, and convincing,” says Dr. Eugene Merrill; “a valuable contribution to our translation and understanding of the Song,” says Ed Blum, general editor of the HCSB translation. Dr. Paul Meier sums it up in these words, “Craig weaves thousands of years of wisdom together to paint a vivid word picture of emotional and sexual intimacy.”" |

It’s Not About Me $18.99 “We live in a culture of selfishness. We are surrounded by messages that say to be happy, to have ultimate purpose in life, we need to make ourselves the center of the universe. Even when we pray, many of us ask God only for what we want. Such a philosophy is fatal. > In his new book, Max Lucado proclaims that to live a fulfilling life we must realize that “it’s not about me.” We were created to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We have but one question to ask before each decision, “Will this glorify God?” > For example, an athlete asks, “How can I play to the glory of God?” A mother asks, “How can I raise my children so that others will see God?” A doctor asks, “How can I treat my patients so that God will be recognized.” > In a way that only Max Lucado can, we find out in >It’s Not About Me>, how to calibrate our lives with God and His glory alone at the center of our world. It is through this “Copernican shift” that we can truly live an unburdened life with the promise of meeting His glory.” |

About Face! $14.99 “The Politically Correct Christian church of the 21st century is impotent as an agent of change in our highly secular society. Lack of Basic Foundational Teaching leaves us ill-equipped to share our faith. Spiritual Warfare is destroying our marriages, our families and our personal faith walks. New Age Influences are being added daily to the teachings in our houses of worship. The body of Christ has become virtually indistinguishable from Secular Society. God’s glory is missing from His churches. It is time for Change… change which brings us back to His Word, back to living a holy life as He commanded, and back to a place where we can be a positive influence in today’s immoral world. Do you want basic foundational truths? Are you willing to commit to chasing hard after Jesus? If you are, then an “about face” is required. Vicki Renee Bryant is a passionate Bible teacher, Christian speaker and writer for Jesus Christ. She has a consuming love for the Word of God and a passion for those who wear the name of Christ to have that same hunger. She believes if Christians studied and applied Biblical truths they would influence the world for the cause of Christ. About Face contains a wealth of foundational Christian truths, plus a strategy plan for implementation. For Such a Time as This… was Vicki’s first published work. She and her husband Dan own His House, a Bible and gift store, in Owosso, Michigan.” |

The Song of Songs $29.95 “This commentary views the Song as a collection of love poems and carefully examines features of Hebrew poetry in order to uncover the delicacy of their expression. It is unique not only in the attention that it gives to the obvious feminine perspective of the poems but in their ecosensitive character. Although it is a tribute to mutual love, the principal frame of reference is the amorous disposition of the woman. Her words open and close the Song and her voice is dominant throughout.” |

The Family: What the Bible Says about Roles and Relationships in a Harmonious Christian Household $20 “God intends for each person to play a role in family life, the ultimate goal of which is the transformation of the individual, the home, and the society for the glory of God. In The Family, author J.R. Miller carefully addresses each member of the family, striking the perfect balance between inspiration and exhortation. > Miller says, “The married life is meant to be the happiest, fullest, purest, richest life. It is God’s own ideal of completeness]].Every true-hearted husband should seek to be worthy of the wife he has already won. A true wife makes a man’s life nobler, stronger, grander, by the omnipotence of her love ‘turning all the forces of manhood upward and heavenward.’” > Miller also asks, “Why should not a brother make a confidante of his own sister rather than of any other? Why should not a sister look to her own brother for counsel, for protection, for advice, rather than to any other?”" |

Songs about My Cats $65.33 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Songs About My Cats is a 2001 glitchcore album by Venetian Snares. It is also his first solo album on the Planet Mu label (Making Orange Things, released barely one month prior to Songs About My Cats on Planet Mu, was a collaboration with Speedranch). The album features influence from many separate styles. The most prominent influence is ambient music, however, certain songs also show influence from jazz music, such as Pouncelciot, which uses samples from an improvisation by Anthony Braxton, and even influence from classical music and salsa music appear on the album. Songs About My Cats is unusual because Venetian Snares songs typically use a 7/4 time signature, while none of the songs on this album do. Breakfast Time for Baboons, Poor Kakarookee, and Pouncelciot are in 10/4. Nepetalactone is in 9/4 and Fluff Master is in 11/4. Both Katzesorge tracks are identical except that the second has a barely audible drone in the background for most of the song. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Excerpt: Gui d’Ussel, d’Ussèl, or d’Uisel (fl. 11951209) was a turn-of-the-thirteenth-century troubadour of the Limousin. Twenty of his poems survive: eight cansos, two pastorelas, two coblas, and eight tensos, several with his relatives and including a partimen with Maria de Ventadorn. Four of his cansos melodies remain. According to his vida, Gui was the youngest of three sons of a wealthy noble family of the castle Ussel-sur-Sarzonne, northeast of Ventadorn. He and his brothers Ebles and Peire, as well as his cousin Elias, are all reputed troubadours and castellans of Ussel according to the author of the vida, who makes Gui himself a canon of Montferrand and Brioude in the diocese of Clermont. Among his relatives Gui was known for his cansos. The only confirmation of Gui’s family from outside his vida is a reference to the brothers Guido and Eblo Usseli donating land to the abbey of Bonaigue. Gui’s biographer believed him to have been in love with Malgarita, wife of Rainaut VI, viscount of Aubusson. He supposedly later fell in love with Guillemette de Comborn, wife of Dalfi d’Alvernha, and composed many songs about her. Gui spent almost his entire life in the Limousin and Auvergne, rarely travelling abroad. Gui addresses several of his songs to Maria de Ventadorn (including the partimen) and makes reference to Peter II of Aragon in one which survives with a melody. The reference to Peter’s queen in the song’s razo puts the date of its composition in 1204 or later, after Peter’s marria… |

In the latter capacity, he traveled through much of Europe, even as far as Georgia (as recounted in “Durch Barbarei, Arabia”), and was inducted into the Order of the Dragon. He lived for a time in Seis am Schlern. Oswald’s father was Friedrich von Wolkenstein and his mother Katharina von Villanders. When he was ten years old, Oswald left his family and became squire of a knight errant. Oswald described the journeys undertaken by him in the following 14 years in his autobiographical song “Es fügt sich…”, mentioning travels to Crete, Prussia, Lithuania, Crimea, Turkey, the Holy Land, France, Lombardy and Spain, as well as being shipwrecked in the Black Sea. After the death of his father in 1399, Oswald returned to the Tyrol and began a drawn out quarrel with his older brother Michael about their inheritance. In 1401-1402 Oswald participated in the failed Italian expedition of King Rupert of Germany. In 1407 he and his brother finally agreed on how to split the inheritance: Oswald received a third of Castle Hauenstein and the accompanying estates in Seis am Schlern. The other two thirds of the castle belong to a knight named Martin Jäger, but Oswald did not respect the property situation, occupying the entire castle and appropriating Jägers share of the tithe. In 1408, in preparation for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Oswald paid for a memorial stone to be installed on the wall of the cathedral in Brixen. The stone has survived, and shows him in the garb of a Crusader, with the long beard associated with pilgrims. Before he left, he wrote several songs for his beloved, Anna Hausmann, the wife … |

A Message From The Poetic Messenger $14.99 A Message from the Poetic Messenger is a Book of poetry, spoken word and songs glorifying God, and encouraging others. It’s about transformation, forgiveness, making discrimination known, and poetic justice with a universal message that “We are All In One and One In all.” People going through workplace discrimination and other types of discrimination, I know how you feel! I should be absent from the body, and present with Lord from all the abuse I endured and continue to bear at the hands of a few of my past employers. But, I’m not dead, I’m alive and probably more so than ever before. You can get through all of the pain without harming others or yourself. I made it through, not with family, nor with friends. I trusted God and while I waited for God to move on my behalf; God kept me. He gave me strength, courage, wisdom and peace, as He revealed my gifts and talents. I didn’t know I could write like this, until one cold dark gloomy rainy evening while sitting in the lunchroom at work, isolated from my co-workers, feeling lonely and helpless, “I asked God, what am I going to do?” “A voice said, write a song.” “I repeated back to God, write a song!” “A voice said, don’t discriminate.” I got a pen and paper and that night I was inspired to write “No Skin.”Brenda S. Rogers is the mother of two children and grandmother of three. She’s a Follower of Jesus Christ, a God-made poet and songwriter, professionally, she’s a Social Worker, creatively, she’s multi-talented. A Worthy Legacy $22.54 The quiet last wordsThe Harmattan wind scorches across Nigeria, and an old man lies dying. His community gathers to pay its respects; their haunting songs echoing in the warm twilight. Tomi Akinyanmi, his eldest granddaughter, is present along with the rest of the family, and as she listens to Grandpa s last words, she feels a resonance deep within her heart. For Grandpa doesn t talk of regrets, or petty grievances, instead he talks softly about life; how to survive, how to be happy, how to achieve self-respect.A year on from her Grandpa s death, Tomi returns to his village. The family bonds have crumbled, no longer held strong by their patriarch. Searching for some link to her Grandpa, in the hope of understanding more, Tomi looks for the journal she once wrote and in which Grandpa would set thought-provoking essays. She finds the journal, but instead of one last essay, she finds Grandpa has left her his thoughts, a continuation of those spoken on his deathbed. He explains to Tomi that life is a gift, and that it should be treated as such. He also writes of love, and the importance of giving love to others to allow them to love in return. His final words speak of happiness and how it can be achieved through four different disciplines, each balanced and working together. Hard work does not mean wealth; Neither does wealth mean class. Age does not mean wisdom, And Love does not mean bliss. Hard work drives vision. Class comes with confidence. Wisdom is found in experience, And love is but a shelter for him who finds it. Amid all the life storms, A man would wade through; Confidence and vision, wisdom and love, Together pull him through. A Worthy Legacy is a book far greater than its sum of parts; a moral guide that does not preach or command, but simply presents a code for life with a confidence and credibility that allows the reader to relate to and apply its philosophies. |

Albanian Tattoo: Poems $9.99 Sami Milloshi’s newest collection of poetry, Albanian Tattoo, is an emotional exploration of some of the collateral damage of emigration unaccounted for by a shallow assumption of hope in an American Dream. Milloshi’s work presents a linguist’s playground, with fascinating discourse patterns, at once cajoling and poignant, cleverly interspersed with sharp musings and hidden metaphors.Milloshi’s second book of poetry not written in his native tongue, Albanian Tattoo examines the themes of homesickness, hope, and love of family and freedom. The use of his newly learned language to express his observations and his essence is surprising and innovative, even as the subject matter turns bitter. He reflects on his personal struggles and how they have deepened his thoughts about the values of life, making love and freedom sacred to him.I Saw My RiverI saw my river it flooded lands, dreams, houses, wedding parties, deaths, kisses, and all ached in my heart.I saw my river calming down songs and roses had no thirst expecting the caress of this waters to come they bloomed in my soul.My river is not a woman without womb,I know the source from which it flows! |

Facing harsh discrimination from within her surroundings, she left her village to study at a secular school. Later, when she was with the Sisters at Aït Manguellet hospital, she converted to Roman Catholicism . She met another Kabyle Catholic convert, Antoine-Belkacem Amrouche, whom she married in 1898. They had eight children together, but only two of them would remain living by the time of her death. The family first moved to Tunis , where Taos was born, and then France.During her lifetime, she made a considerable impact on the works of Jean and Taos. The folk songs she sang to her family were compiled and translated to French by Jean in 1939 as Chants berbères de Kabylie . In 1967, Taos made a music album in Kabyle bearing the same title as Jean’s folk song collection. Her autobiography Histoire de ma vie was published posthumously in 1968. This book discusses mainly about the life she lived as a woman living in two different worlds: between the traditional Kabyle life and language and the colonial power France, its language, and particularly its predominant religion, Christianity .A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at |

Animal Lover $20.98 The reigning kings of the concept album are back with Animal Lover, another very dense though not completely impenetrable offering from the Residents. They seem to be continuing with the themes of mortality that surfaced in Demons Dance Alone, but this time viewed through the observations and relationships between humans and animals. Each song is accompanied by a written text (in addition to the lyrics), that sketches the scene and characters of the song. There seems to be an overall structure to the work as a whole because groups of songs are separated from each other by brief instrumentals. There’s a general malaise permeating Animal Lover, but each of the “sets” of songs presents its own moods and emotions (one set is more menacing and confrontational, one set very sad and sympathetic, etc.). As has been the case for decades now, the Residents have a knack for exposing the dark underbelly of the human condition, but this time it’s tempered with some surprisingly empathetic moments. “Inner Space” deals with a woman watching her father die in a hospital (the story explained through the eyes of a mouse, but sung by the daughter) and “The Cat” seems to be about a mother and son and their changed relationship both to each other and the family cat following the son’s absence, perhaps due to a war. There’s alot more going on in these songs and the way they’re arranged, but it will take multiple listens to begin to decode it. Musically, they’ve added some very organic sounds to their creepy synth stylings, adding lots of acoustic bass, harmonica and violin to the processed sounds of electric guitar and keyboards. There’s also a fairly extensive use of chimes, gongs, and gamelan. The “singing Resident” has a diminished role as they utilize a broader palette of voices, including a couple excellent performances by Molley Harvey. There is also an additional disc included, where they take various elements from the album proper and come up with something akin to a d… |

At The End Of Paths Taken $11.63 Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. It is, in other words, a classic Cowboy Junkies album – a suite of smart, richly textured songs that value subtlety over broad, generic strokes, songs that prize insight and casual revelations over easily digestible cliches.Family lies at the heart of the album’s eleven songs, and, of course, that is appropriate, too. Three of the band’s members – singer Margo Timmins; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael Timmins; and drummer Peter Timmins – are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work.Track Listing1. Brand New World2. Still Lost3. Beginner’s Guide to Bird Songs of North America $29.99 The ability to identify birds by their songs and calls is an indispensable skill for any well-rounded birder. Our ears allow us to “see” in the dark, to penetrate dense foliage, to identify birds at great distances or seen only fleetingly, and even to “spot” birds behind our backs. For a few look-alike species voice is the only reliable way of field identification. However, to learn bird songs you have to hear them, not just read about them in a book. With the publication of Beginners Guide to Bird Songs of North America, by John Neville and Mel Coulson, acquiring those skills has just become a whole lot easier. John & Mel, in an engaging and light-hearted way, actually teach you the songs and calls of 108 of our most common North American birds through a series of eight 20 minute lessons. The first seven lessons are devoted to habitats. Each bird is given a 1 to 2 minute sound essay with a voice-over giving simple tips, geographical clues, hints on tonal quality and innovative memory aids to help you recognize and remember it. As you will learn on these CDs, the Olive-sided Flycatcher really does say “Quick, three beers!” and the Northern Saw-whet Owl sounds like the back-up alarm on a garbage truck! Regional dialects are covered in detail, and a special emphasis is made of the differences between closely related eastern and western species. A quiz at the end of each lesson serves to test your progress and makes the learning process more enjoyable. Quiz answers are given in the liner booklet, along with the mnemonic or associated idea used to identify the song. The final lesson is a review section where the more difficult birds and family groups are contrasted one againstanother until you really do understand the differences. The recordings are crisp and clear, as one reviewer noted:”It would be very difficult to find another set that has this exceptional quality”. Beginners Guide to Bird Songs of North America is unquestionably the |

Blackened Air $10.67 Making great music is all about the line. There’s a line, like a telephone cord and it goes from someone’s brain to a guitar through some kind of band into microphones onto tape onto records and into the home of the listener. It’s a long line, and making it short, as close to invisible as possible, is a trick that hardly anyone can do well. It takes discipline, a lack of ego, generosity coupled with the kind of circumspection that doesn’t come easily to someone who thinks his/her innermost thoughts are worthy of public consumption. On Blackened Air, Nina Nastasia and her band continue to keep the line short to the point of vanishing, even as they expand on the more straightforward, almost sing-song qualities of her debut album, Dogs. Both records were documented by Steve Albini in Chicago. Where they were once content to support a vocal melody, they now pry it apart and look down its throat. The stringed and wind instruments (viola, cello, mandolin, accordion, bowed saw, acoustic and electric guitars) reach up out of the songs into rarefied territory. Little stories of Peeping Toms and the police lights they bring with them. Graveyards and impolite family. Epigrams against disaster, depression, simple forgetfulness, delivered so effortlessly that the prevision of the delivery registers long after its substance has left its mark. When she sings I’m not hiding anything/I’m not trying to fool you at all, in a song titled That’s All There Is, it is all the truth. A generation-plus of young troubadours pine for things they never had to lose, as if sadness and depression were inevitable consequences of being alive. Natasia’s music is an antidote to all of that. The Blackened Air is a darkish record not just in title, but in examining everything without caving in to decadence, it’s a rejuvenating experience. It’s informed, without affect, unique and succinct. Above all, it’s beautiful to hear and a pleasure to have in one’s home. |

Blue Horses Rush In: Poems and Stories $0.25 Wrapped in blankets and looking at the stars, a young Navajo girl listened long ago to stories that would guide her for the rest of her life. “Such summer evenings were filled with quiet voices, dogs barking far away, the fire crackling, and often we could hear the faint drums and songs of a ceremony somewhere in the distance,” writes Luci Tapahonso in this compelling collection. Blue Horses Rush In takes its title from a poem about the birth of her granddaughter Chamisa, whose heart “pounded quickly and we recognized / the sound of horses running: / the thundering of hooves on the desert floor.” Through such personal insights, this collection follows the cycle of a woman’s life and underlines what it means to be Navajo in the late twentieth century. The book marks a major accomplishment in American literature for its successful blending of Navajo cultural values and forms with the English language, while at the same time retaining the Navajo character. Here, Luci Tapahonso walks slowly through an ancient Hohokam village, recalling stories passed down from generation to generation. Later in the book, she may tell a funny story about a friend, then, within a few pages, describe family rituals like roasting green chiles or baking bread in an outside oven. Throughout, Tapahonso shares with readers her belief in the power of pollen and prayer feathers and sacred songs. Many of these stories were originally told in Navajo, taking no longer than ten minutes in the telling. “Yet, in recreating them, it is necessary to describe the land, the sky, the light, and other details of time and place,” writes Tapahonso. “In this way, I attempt to create and convey the setting for the oral text. In writing, I revisit the place or places concerned and try to bring the reader to them, thereby enabling myself and other Navajos to sojourn mentally and emotionally in our home, Dinétah.” |

Throughout, Tapahonso shares with readers her belief in the power of pollen and prayer feathers and sacred songs. Many of these stories were originally told in Navajo, taking no longer than ten minutes in the telling. Yet, in recreating them, it is necessary to describe the land, the sky, the light, and other details of time and place , writes Tapahonso. In this way, I attempt to create and convey the setting for the oral text.In writing, I revisit the place or places concerned and try to bring the reader to them, thereby enabling myself and other Navajos to sojourn mentally and emotionally in our home, Dinetah . |

Brave Soul: A spiritual memoir $9.99 Cherie Bell relays the purpose of life to the spiritual. With humor and grace, she shares for the first time her experience living as a Pentecostal teen-ager in the 1970s. At first happy her chaotic family life would be tamed by church membership, she finds her parents’ choice too strict. After a few years of learning the reasons for the ‘holiness’ lifestyle, she joins, following the plan of salvation and conforms to the church’s teachings. An enthused youth, she lives the Pentecostal life with gusto. But as she grows into an independent young woman, with a curiosity toward world religions, she begins to break from the strict church.Influenced by the New Age movement during the 1980s, she studied the teachings of Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism and the Gnostic gospels with teachings from Christ more suited to modern times.Using old-time gospel and contemporary Christian songs titles to set off each segment of her spiritual evolution, from conservative Christian to a free-thinker who finds spiritual enlightenment in all world religions, Ms. Bell writes as one who knows the Pentecostal experience firsthand, and yet she does not argue her views today. Indeed she concludes everyone’s path in life is unique.Hers is an interesting story that leaves readers thinking about religious fundamentalism and its impact on the world today. |

Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make You a Pie: A Story about Edna Lewis $16 Long before the natural-food movement gained popularity, before greenmarkets sprouted across the United States, Edna Lewis championed purity of ingredients, regional cuisine, and the importance of bringing food directly from the farm to the table. She was a chef when female chefs—-let alone African American female chefs—-were few and far between, and she received many awards for her work. With lyrical text and glorious watercolor illustrations, author/illustrator Robbin Gourley lovingly traces the childhood roots of Edna’s appreciation for the bounties of nature. The story follows Edna from early spring through the growing season to a family dinner celebrating a successful harvest. Folk rhymes, sayings, and songs about food are sprinkled throughout the text, and five kid-friendly recipes and an author’s note about Edna’s life are included at the end. |

Business Up Front/Party In The Back [Bonus Tracks] $11.99 How do you know that Family Force 5 are a funny bunch of fellows? Well, they name their album after everybody’s favorite haircut, the Mullet, for one — and if that didn’t tip you off, there’s also the fact that they have a drummer called “Crouton.” But if you caught the Pulp Fiction reference in their band name (“Fox Force Five. Fox, as in we’re a bunch of foxy chicks. Force, as in we’re a force to be reckoned with. Five, as in there’s one, two, three, four, five of us”) and hoped that it meant that Family Force 5 might be clever will find Business Up Front/Party in the Back a disappointment. But that assumes that anyone had expectations for the first album by this band of “3 blood brothers and 2 friends.” That’s how they describe themselves on their MySpace page, which is also where they unleash their band manifesto: “they decided to make world history by playing a concoction of blended sounds!! Our music b uplifting and has a great message!” (sic). Well, they’re being partially truthful. Family Force 5 do indeed play a concoction of blended sounds which, to the untrained ear, may sound like metallic riffs and rap rhythms learned from Limp Bizkit, but given a tongue-in-cheek makeover by piling up all sorts sounds from the ’80s, from analog synths to the theme from Knight Rider to harmonies lifted from urban soul records to samples of Beastie Boys’ samples to Speak & Spells, which are heard on about three tracks and name-dropped in the opener, “Cadillac Phunque.” Their music is indeed uplifting, if your definition of uplifting is, to paraphrase Eddie Murphy, partying all the time — and that pretty much happens to be their message, too, since every one of the 12 songs on Business Up Front is about having a good time (even the “X-Girlfriend” and bitchy “Drama Queen” seem to get smacked down; they won’t get with the program and party). So, Family Force 5 don’t take things too seriously, which is fair enough — rock & roll gets boring when bands get s… |

Catherine Called Birdy $88.69 Karen Cushman has a long-standing interest in history. Growing tired of hearing about kings, princes, generals, and presidents, she wanted to know what life was like for ordinary young people in other times. Her research into medieval English history and culture led to the writing of Catherine, Called Birdy, her first work. Contained in this program is Catherine’s diary — Catherine, called Little Bird or Birdy, daughter of Rollo and the lady Aislinn, sister to Thomas, Edward, and the abominable Robert. Begun this 12th day of September in the year of Our Lord 1290…I am commanded to write an account of my days. I am bit by fleas and plagued by family…Tangled my spinning again. Corpus bones, what a torture…Spent two hours embroidering a cloth for the church and three hours picking out the stitches after my mother saw it…Picked off twenty-nine fleas today. Catherine’s mother wants to teach her the skills of the lady of the manor and to prepare her to be a gentle and patient wife. Her father wants only to see her married off, and profitably. Catherine fancies herself a painter, a Crusader, a maker of songs, a peddler, a minstrel, a monk, a wart charmer…Of all the possibilities, she has ruled out only one: being sold like cheese to the highest bidder. Against a vivid backdrop of everyday life on a medieval English manor, Catherine’s earthy, spirited account of her fourteenth year is a richly entertaining story with an utterly unforgettable heroine. Kate Maberly’s film credits include The Secret Garden, Friendship Field and Gulliver’s Travels. She appeared in the ABC miniseries The Langoliers. |

Chasing the Rising Sun: The Journey of an American Song $26 Chasing the Rising Sun is the story of an American musical journey told by a prize-winning writer who traced one song in its many incarnations as it was carried across the world by some of the most famous singers of the twentieth century. Most people know the song “House of the Rising Sun” as 1960s rock by the British Invasion group the Animals, a ballad about a place in New Orleans — a whorehouse or a prison or gambling joint that’s been the ruin of many poor girls or boys. Bob Dylan did a version and Frijid Pink cut a hard-rocking rendition. But that barely scratches the surface; few songs have traveled a journey as intricate as “House of the Rising Sun.” The rise of the song in this country and the launch of its world travels can be traced to Georgia Turner, a poor, sixteen-year-old daughter of a miner living in Middlesboro, Kentucky, in 1937 when the young folk-music collector Alan Lomax, on a trip collecting field recordings, captured her voice singing “The Rising Sun Blues.” Lomax deposited the song in the Library of Congress and included it in the 1941 book Our Singing Country. In short order, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, and Josh White learned the song and each recorded it. From there it began to move to the planet’s farthest corners. Today, hundreds of artists have recorded “House of the Rising Sun,” and it can be heard in the most diverse of places — Chinese karaoke bars, Gatorade ads, and as a ring tone on cell phones. Anthony began his search in New Orleans, where he met Eric Burdon of the Animals. He traveled to the Appalachians — to eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, and western North Carolina — to scour the mountains for the song’s beginnings. He found Homer Callahan, who learned it in the mountains during a corn shucking; he discovered connections to Clarence “Tom” Ashley, who traveled as a performer in a 1920s medicine show. He went to Daisy, Kentucky, to visit the family of the late |

Christmas Memories $11.08 An album of inspirational music for all seasons, Christmas Memories–Barbra Streisand’s first seasonal collection since the perennial bestseller A Christmas Album, released in 1967–is lovingly dedicated to Stephan Weiss–the husband of designer Donna Karan and a close friend of Streisand’s–who passed away last June 2001. One of the album’s most moving new songs, Closer, is discussed by Streisand in her notes to the album: Dean Pitchford and Tom Snow had written a new love song for me, about wanting to be ‘closer’ to that special someone at Christmas. It was a beautiful melody, but I wanted something more personal–about losing someone you love. Dean agreed to revisit his lyric, and what he came up with perfectly captured what I wanted to say. Christmas Memories includes I Remember, an early Stephen Sondheim composition originally written for a television musical called Evening Primrose. Though initially a non-holiday composition, Streisand asked Sondheim to add a verse to make it more appropriate for this album. He brilliantly turned it into a kind of remembrance of Christmas’ past. On Streisand’s first holiday record, she performed Ave Maria , the melody composed by the 19th century French composer Charles Gounod. She revisits Ave Maria on Christmas Memories, this time drawing on the melody written by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert in 1825. Its deeply devotional melody resonates no matter what religion you may be, Streisand has written in the album’s notes. The universality of faith and spirit is again addressed on her powerfully moving performance of One God. Streisand first heard the song at the age of 16 on Good Night, Dear Lord, a spiritual album recorded by Johnny Mathis in 1958. The message is that no matter what God you may pray to–love and compassion is the basis of all religion, writes Streisand. Each of us is connected to this family of man. This is something I truly believe in…unit |
