Youths Turn to Community Theater and Digital Story Telling to Address Domestic Violence and Trafficking

Young people in Olongapo and Angeles City are tapping their creative talents to combat serious issues that have plagued their communities: domestic violence and trafficking. Using community theater and digital story telling as tools, they have shared their first-hand experiences, raising awareness about violence against women and youth.

These innovative methods are a direct result of WeDpro’s European Union (EU)-supported project called The Red AVP (Anti-Violence Project), short for Private and Public Faces of Violence Against Women: Addressing Domestic Violence and Trafficking In the Urban Poor Communities and Entertainment Centers of Angeles City and Olongapo City.

According to Aida Santos-Maranan, Chairperson of WeDpro and Project Manager of The Red AVP, the sites were chosen because of the prevalence of abuse in the said areas.
“The dust left behind by the US military bases in Subic and Clark, even if it was more than decades ago, has filtered into all aspects of lives in Angeles and Olongapo. The greatest tragedies of prostitution, domestic violence, exploitation and trafficking in the red light districts of Angeles City and Olongapo City are the consequences it has done for the youth and children,” she said.

“These children and youth grew up amidst a seemingly endless cycle of violence and aggression, and are largely deprived of the kind of environment that allows them a safe space in which to play, experiment and develop a healthy and meaningful sense of themselves and their surroundings,” she added.

Through The Red AVP, WeDpro established two community theaters–”Salamin” in Angeles City and “Maskara” in Olongapo City. The theater program has provided opportunities for the youth participants to develop the skills, self-knowledge, and confidence which would empower them to challenge present realities and to take control of their future.

The theater scholars attended various workshops, undergoing theater exercises and group dynamic processes and activities that tackled basic improvisation techniques, acting exercises, mime, visual arts, voice lessons, dance and creative movements. These exercises and activities enable the scholars to harness and maximize their creativity.

After a series of workshops and with the guidance of The Red AVP Community-based Theater Development Director and Lead Trainer Joel Saracho, who completed the crucial last quarter activities, “Salamin” and “Maskara” were able to perform in public their own plays that relate to the challenges that they face in their communities, including domestic violence and trafficking.

Some members of the theater groups also created their own digital stories in WeDpro’s project called The Youth Tell Their Stories: Breaking Silences, Using ICT as a Form of Healing. Supported by the Association for Progressive Communications and the Foundation for Media Alternatives, in collaboration with Isis International-Manila, the project enabled survivors of violence and trafficking to tell their stories and experiences using digital media.

Among the stories were Pagnanasa, where Allen narrates with pain his experience of abuse from his stepfather; Bakit Ganun, a young man’s tale of violence that he experienced from his own parents; and Hubog ng Aking Kabataan, where a youth tells her story about being victimized by child trafficking at the age of 12.

“We use art as a social forum and as a balm for wounded spirits,” Santos-Maranan said. “Our daily witness of their enthusiasm and the seeds of their transformation into self-confident and healthy individuals, is what gives us the conviction and motivation to go on.”

The digital stories can be viewed in full on www.youtube.com/user/wedprophils. For more information about WeDpro and The Red AVP, please contact (632) 4267479 or visit www.wedprophils.org.

The purpose of this study was to discover whether Digital Storytelling influenced participants to make substantive meaning altering revisions in their writing. This study also explored the influence that digital images have on the quality of participants Digital Stories. The participants were four middle school students invited to attend a summer writing clinic at a midwestern university. The study used a qualitative case study design. Data were collected from multiple sources: written drafts, revision conferences, field observations, interview questionnaires, storyboards, and iMovies. Results indicated that at the beginning of the study the participants had a shallow understanding of revision. Essentially, they viewed revision as the correction of minor writing faults. At the conclusion of the study, however, the participants used three major revision operations: adding, deleting, and rearranging story elements as they wrote their Digital Stories. It was found that storyboarding and iMovie making, in particular, influenced writers to engage in substantive meaning altering revision of their Digital Stories. It was also found that incorporating digital images into their Digital Stories had an important influence on the quality of participants writing. As in his earlier screenplays, Todd Solondz peers deeply into the underside of American suburban life and concerns in Storytelling, with sometimes shocking, sometimes hilarious, results. The film is in two parts: “Fiction” deals with the relationship between students and their black teacher in a college creative writing class while hammering away in decidedly non-PC fashion at the most sensitive social and political concerns of our time: race, sex, prejudice against the disabled. “Nonfiction” follows the attempts of an underachieving documentary filmmaker to capture the day-to-day life of an underachieving high-school student and his family – with surprisingly horrifying results. The film – which stars John Goodman and Julie Hagerty as the parents in the second part of the movie – caused something of a sensation when it was first shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2001.

Suddenly They Heard Footsteps: Storytelling For The Twenty-First Century

Suddenly They Heard Footsteps: Storytelling For The Twenty-First Century

$7.09

Canada’s best-known storyteller, Dan Yashinsky, lives his life as teller and listener, and shows how storytelling can and does create vital connections between individuals, communities and families. In an age of instant messaging, entertainment systems and digital interaction, why is it that more and more people are being drawn to the art of oral storytelling? As Dan Yashinsky, one of Canada’s most well-known and beloved storytellers shows, an old tradition has become the new avant-garde. Storytelling is still very much alive in this digital age: it connects us to each other, to our communities and to our past. In fact, people are as hungry as they’ve ever been for the wisdom and solace of told stories. But they are also looking for stories that will speak to our post-modern, fractured, apocalyptic age. Suddenly They Heard Footsteps is part memoir, part instruction, part cultural history, and includes tales that Dan has told to wide acclaim. By turns humorous, inspiring, instructive and philosophical, Dan shows us that, like love, stories mean the most the very moment we give them away.

Interactive Storytelling

Interactive Storytelling

$74.88

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Interactive storytelling is a form of computer entertainment in which players take on the role of a protagonist in a dramatic storyline. The term was coined by Chris Crawford, a main proponent and developer. Interactive storytelling and interactive fiction are distinct in that interactive storytelling focuses on drama and dynamic circumstances, whereas interactive fiction traditionally (but not necessarily) focusses on puzzlesolving and navigating through pre conceived circumstances. Wellwritten examples of both should be nonlinear. Sharing stories or personal experiences in everyday conversation may constitute the basis for all storytelling activities including telling folk tales, legends, fictive stories, or even writing novels, plays, and films. This book analyzes firstperson narratives in the everyday interactions of speakers of Japanese. Most of the data come from several dozen hours of taperecorded conversations. This study discusses the thematic organization of the stories, their social functions, and the use of tense and aspect in narratives. It aims at establishing the links between linguistic strategies, and cognitive and contextual processes, as well as testing the crosslinguistic and crosscultural validity of existing findings in narrative studies of storytelling practices in English among other languages. Thus, this book provides useful information for students and specialists of tense and aspect, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, narratology, cognitive linguistics, literary study, as well as teachers of Japanese and English, and anyone interested in storytelling and language. This thesis documents the concept, installation and intentions of my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Television Will Save Us All. This document includes a statement regarding the construction and installation of Television Will Save Us All as well as a discussion of this works relation to my larger body of art and the social context in which I work. The installation of Television Will Save Us All, as well as the ideas expressed in this thesis are an exploration of the imperfection of communication, and the causes those imperfections have on our perception of the world around us. I create art that is intended to call into question the source of information more than its expressed meaning. In order to achieve this it is often necessary to create an experience for the intended viewer that will bring them to a conclusion rather than to communicate the idea directly. The Politics of Storytelling

The Politics of Storytelling

First Nations literature is a rather new field of literature, which was recognized as a distinct literary category only in the mid 20th century. Since then, First Nations authors have tried to work against stereotypical images about themselves by means of writing and have aimed at a more authentic portrayal of indigenous peoples from a Native point of view. The study puts its focus on two prevalent themes that can often be found in First Nations literature; firstly, the portrayal of political activism that constitutes a rebellion against government policies; and secondly, the quest for identity of the protagonist, which happens in relation with the Native community and the homeland. Although the novels differ greatly in the genres, styles and structures applied, the themes mentioned are central in all three works of fiction. This means that the novels all comment on the influence politics has had on the lives of Natives and illustrate that it is important to come to terms with cultural traditions in order to find ones own identity as a Native person. The Importance of Storytelling in Todays Business

$109.93

In todays business there is an abundance of tools for communication to use. They all, however, contain a common denominator they are all trying to tell a story or even several stories. In this work we investigate how one company can communicate and manage its brand identity through the implementation of storytelling. Theories, mainly from Aaker and Kapferer have been used to investigate brand identity. Based on theoretical and empirical material about storytelling we have found key issues of the notion of storytelling. These materials involve discussions about the concept of storytelling, its area of application and how stories should be structured and also which aspects are important for this process. This work should therefore be especially useful for professionals in Communications and Marketing fields, or anyone else who are interested in communications and storytelling from a marketing perspective. Stories reveal. Stories motivate. Stories bind individuals into teams. Stories create solutions. In the Presence of Each Other: A Pedagogy of Storytelling

In the Presence of Each Other: A Pedagogy of Storytelling

$30.99

There can be little doubt that pedagogical practices have increasingly become focused on reading and writing in childhood education. In the Presence of Each Other is a brilliant ethnography that examines the educational benefits of the use of oral storytelling in the classroom and the ways in which non-print literacy enhances children’s overall language and communication capacities. Presenting a strong argument based on compelling evidence for the incorporation of oral practices in the classroom, Johanna Kuyvenhoven follows a group of children in grades four and five as they forge an inclusive learning environment that respects linguistic, social, and ethnic diversity by sharing stories out loud. She traces the positive effects that oral storytelling has on children’s vocabularies, writing skills, as well as for problem-solving abilities and empathetic responses that are essential to learning across the disciplines. In the Presence of Each Other is a ground-breaking work not only for educators but also for anyone interested in the practice of storytelling.

Early descriptions of culture as a part of Darwinianevolution were ignored or rejected by literarycritics and discredited through public disapproval, but have seen renewed interest during the last twodecades. Evolutionary psychology, anthropology, neuroscience, formalism, and Darwinist literatureindependently suggest cultural displays that stem, unrecognized, from innate mental processes. Tropes, narrative forms and functions, and myth may beduplicated between apparently unrelated cultures.Sectors of the brain that activate during languageuse, biographical storytelling, and fictivestorytelling have been identified through modernimaging. Relating Narratives: Storytelling and Selfhood

Relating Narratives: Storytelling and Selfhood

$211.89

Relating Narratives is a major new work by the philosopher and feminist thinker Adriana Cavarero. First published in Italian to widespread acclaim, Relating Narratives is a fascinating and challenging new account of the relationship between selfhood and narration. Drawing a diverse array of thinkers from both the philosophical and the literary tradition, from Sophocles and Homer to Hannah Arendt, Karen Blixen, Walter Benjamin and Borges, Adriana Cadareros theory of the narratable self shows how narrative models in philosophy and literature can open new ways of thinking about formation of human identities. By showing how each human being has a unique story that can be told about them, Adriana Cavarero inaugurates an important shift in thinking about subjectivity and identity which relies not upon categorical or discursive norms, but rather seeks to account for who each one of us uniquely is. Before the multi-million, runaway bestseller The Da Vinci Code , Dan Brown set his razor-sharp research and storytelling skills on the most powerful intelligence organization on earth–the National Security Agency (NSA), an ultra-secret, multibillion-dollar agency many times more powerful than the CIA. When the NSA’s invincible code-breaking machine encounters a mysterious code it cannot break, the agency calls its head cryptographer, Susan Fletcher, a brilliant and beautiful mathematician. What she uncovers sends shock waves through the corridors of power. The NSA is being held hostage…not by guns or bombs, but by a code so ingeniously complex that if released it would cripple U.S. intelligence. Caught in an accelerating tempest of secrecy and lies, Susan Fletcher battles to save the agency she believes in. Betrayed on all sides, she finds herself fighting not only for her country but for her life, and in the end, for the life of the man she loves. From the underground hallways of power to the skyscrapers of Tokyo to the towering cathedrals of Spain, a desperate race unfolds. Storytelling for Grantseekers: A Guide to Creative Nonprofit Fundraising

Storytelling for Grantseekers: A Guide to Creative Nonprofit Fundraising

$24.99

Grantwriters often have little or no training in the practical task of grantseeking. Many feel intimidated by the act of writing, and some don’t enjoy writing. In Storytelling for Grantseekers , Second Edition, Cheryl Clarke presents an organic approach to grantseeking, one that views the process through the lens of the pleasures and rewards of crafting a good story. Grantseekers who approach the process as one in which they are connecting with an audience (grantmakers) and writing a narrative (complete with settings, characters, antagonists and resolutions) find greater success with funders. The writing process becomes a rewarding way to tell the organization’s tale, rather than a chore, and their passion and creativity lead to winning proposals. This book walks readers through all the main phases of the proposal, highlighting the creative elements that link components to each other and unify the entire proposal. The book contains resources on crafting an effective synopsis, overcoming grantwriter’s block, packaging the story, and the best ways to approach the "short stories" (inquiry and cover letters) that support the larger proposal. Clarke also stresses the need to see proposal-writing as part of a larger grantseeking effort, one that emphasizes preparation, working with the entire development staff, and maintaining good relations with funders. In Storytelling for Grantseekers, new and experienced grantseekers alike will discover how to write and support successful proposals with humor and passion. New edition features: Overall updates as well as both refreshed and new examples Workshop exercises for using the storytelling approach New chapters on the application of the storytelling method to other fundraising communications like appeal letters and case statements, as well as the importance of site visits Example of a full narrative proposal

”Through the looking-glass”: Magical and misused objects in nineteenth century children’s literature.

$49.99

This thesis uses stories from St. Nicholas magazine, between the years 1873 and 1905, to examine the representation and function of objects in 19th century, children’s fantasy literature. Objects play prominent roles in two dichotomous genres: Marchen (folktales and fairy tales) which first originated as an oral storytelling tradition for peasants and Nonsense stories (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland , for example), which emerged after America and England’s Industrial Revolutions to entertain children of the new middle class. Both genres developed as a means to empower their audiences.;Marchen stories create a world in which magic already exists. The protagonists gain access to magic objects which allow their individual ascents to power. These magic objects demonstrate enhanced functions. Besides performing their first function, they also perform a magic function. Seven league boots, for example, cushion and protect feet, but also allow the hero to walk seven leagues in a single stride. Magic objects let the hero cheat. He is unbeatable with a Sword of Potency or a Necklace of Strength. He will vanquish the villain, win the princess, and become king. He uses the objects to achieve a change in status and wealth.;Nonsense stories create alternate realities. Protagonists are children who get lured from their world into an alternate realm. They must find their way back home by learning the rules of the new world and how to use its objects. Nonsense objects are juxtaposed, transformed, appropriated, or vivified. Juxtaposition forms relationships between two unrelated objects. Transformation changes objects’ materiality. Appropriation finds new uses for objects. Vivification brings objects to life. The children experience cognitive dissonance when interacting with misused objects. Objects both hinder and help children’s journey, but ultimately mediate the children’s identity quest. Child protagonists leave the alternate world more confident in themselves and their

Folkloristics’ attention to identity and narrative (and the relationship between the two) provide useful tools for analyzing, critiquing, and even determining different forms of political and social discourse that impact policy, personal means of identification, and perceptions of the “Other.” In my dissertation I examine how folklore theories and approaches can inform applied/activist research when storytelling becomes a conscious and political activity. Specifically I explore through participant observation how documentary film production can be used as a form of “counterstory” as defined by critical race theorists to challenge deficit-based constructions of the Other. I argue that the collection methods and analytical tools developed by folklorists can indeed inform a critical reading of the world that can be useful for deconstructing normalized power structures and internalized racism.

 And Then I Remember.

And Then I Remember.

$49.99

And Then I Remember is a documentary oratorio for solo soprano, solo double bass, male chorus, chamber ensemble, tape and video. The piece weaves together recorded interviews, videos and live music to retell the World War II stories of my grandmother, Taimi Lepasaar, who grew up in Estonia and survived both the Russian and German occupations of that country during the war. The focus of the piece is not the political and historical issues surrounding Estonia’s fate during World War II, but rather, the intimate, layered nature of storytelling and memory, especially the strange, subtle ways in which we remember and retell intense emotional experiences. And Then I Remember is written in twelve continuous movements. The narrative of the story is passed back and forth between the recorded voice of my grandmother and the musicians on stage. The solo soprano acts as an onstage personification of Taimi Lepasaar in the 1940s and the double bass personifies her husband, Ants Lepasaar. Both the recorded interviews and the text sung by the soprano are in English but the chorus sings excerpts from the Estonian national epic, Kalevipoeg, in Estonian. These Kalevipoeg texts respond directly to themes central to my grandmother’s stories: intense love of homeland, a wandering, epic journey, and extended rumination on fate, memory, storytelling and the passage of time. Much of the piece is built from melodic fragments written in the style of Estonian folk song. I use these melodic fragments and the call and response techniques associated with this style of singing to suggest the repetitive nature of memory and storytelling as well as to emphasize the incredibly strong nationalistic feelings that are a key part of the memory of most Estonian emigrants like my grandmother. These Estonian-style melodies gradually disappear as the narrative describes leaving Estonia near the end of the war, but the piece as a whole is conceived in a minimalist aesthetic that derives from an

Bringing the Outside In: Visual Ways to Engage Reluctant Readers

Bringing the Outside In: Visual Ways to Engage Reluctant Readers

$7.91

The reading that we value in school is becoming further and further distanced from the literacy students experience in their outside lives. Inside the classroom, we ask our students to immerse themselves in print texts and write purposefully. Once out the door, they are text-messaging, blogging, engaging in online multi-player games, and expertly integrating words, images, and music to create original texts. Can we import these textual spaces and literacies into English class to help re-connect students who don’t see themselves as readers and writers?English educator Sara Kajder’s answer is an emphatic “yes,” and in Bringing the Outside In she demonstrates myriad ways to employ students’ outside talents in the classroom. Drawing on multiple examples of student work, she shows how she adapts the curriculum to incorporate an expanded definition of literacy and literacy tools. Sara offers teachers guidance on how to extend their repertoire of teaching strategies, and help kids connect their natural curiosity and skills as readers and writers of both print and electronic texts, while keeping reading and writing at the center of the curriculum.Keying in on the visual aspects of literacy, and building upon students’ growing interest in using words and images from their lives to read and write for authentic reasons and authentic audiences—integrating such strategies as digital storytelling, visual think-alouds, visual literature circles, and others into English class—Sara and her kids redefine what it means to be literate in today’s world. By adding visual components to class activities and projects integrating tools ranging from pencils and paper to “weblogs” and “wikis,” even reluctant students can become engaged and see themselves as readers and writers for the first time.

Charles Dickens in Cyberspace opens a window on a startling set of literary and scientific links between contemporary American culture and the nineteenth-century heritage it often repudiates. Surveying a wide range of novelists, scientists, filmmakers, and theorists from the past twocenturies, Jay Clayton traces the concealed circuits that connect the telegraph with the Internet, Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine with the digital computer, Frankenstein’s monster with cyborgs and clones, and Dickens’ life and fiction with all manner of contemporary popular culture–from comicbooks and advertising to recent novels and films. In the process, Clayton argues for two important principles: that postmodernism has a hidden or repressed connection with the nineteenth-century and that revealing those connections can aid in the development of a historical cultural studies. InCharles Dickens in Cyberspace nineteenth-century figures–Jane Austen, Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, Ada Lovelace, Joseph Paxton, Mary Shelley, and Mary Somerville–meet a lively group of counterparts from today: Andrea Barrett, Greg Bear, Peter Carey, Helene Cixous, Alfonso Cuaron, William Gibson, Donna Haraway, David Lean, Richard Powers, Salman Rushdie, Ridley Scott, Susan Sontag, Neal Stephenson, Bruce Sterling, and Tom Stoppard. The juxtaposition of such a diverse cast of characters leads to a new way of understanding the undisciplined culture the twoeras share, an understanding that can suggest ways to heal the gap that has long separated literature from science. Combining storytelling and scholarship, this engaging study demonstrates in its own practice the value of aself-reflective stance toward cultural history. Its personal voice, narrative strategies, multiple points of view, recursive loops, and irony emphasize the improvisational nature of the methods it employs. Designing Interfaces in Public Settings: Understanding the Role of the Spectator in Human-Computer Interaction

Designing Interfaces in Public Settings: Understanding the Role of the Spectator in Human-Computer Interaction

$99

Interaction with computers is becoming an increasingly ubiquitous and public affair. With more and more interactive digital systems being deployed in places such as museums, city streets and performance venues, understanding how to design for them is becoming ever more pertinent. Crafting interactions for these public settings raises a host of new challenges for human-computer interaction, widening the focus of design from concern about an individual’s dialogue with an interface, tothe ways in which interaction affects and is affected by spectators and bystanders.Designing Interfaces in Public Settings takes a performative perspective on interaction, exploring a series of empirical studies of technology at work in public performance environments. From interactive storytelling, to mobile devices on city streets, from digital telemetry systems on fairground rides to augmented reality installation interactives, this book documents the design issues emerging from the changing role of technology as it pushes out into our everyday lives.Through building a design framework from these studies and the growing body of literature examining public technologies, this book provides a new perspective for understanding human-computer interaction. Mapping out this new and challenging design space, Designing Interfaces in Public Settings offers both conceptual understandings and practical strategies for interaction design practitioners, artists working with technology and computer scientists.

Digital Moviemaking is intended to meet the needs of professionals and students who deal with digital moviemaking and want to emphasize the directorial and storytelling functions of the media. While concentrating on the narrative moving picture, many of the principles discussed are useful for other forms, such as documentaries, commercials, and music videos. The text stresses the forethought and care that must go into all aspects of production, including the technical information that anyone engaged in production in this area should know. However, the main emphasis is on the creative process: the kinds of decisions that are made and the strategies that are developed. This edition follows the previous pattern of a technological chapter followed by a chapter that deals with aesthetic approaches.

Digital Storytelling is a tool that was created to integrate the newest technology in the classroom. It has proven to be a powerful tool indeed. It is said that the reason for its power lies with the type of students we teach each day in our schools. Students today are multi-taskers, creative, and visual learners. They have grown up in a world of multimedia and respond to audio-visual in positive ways. Given the opportunity to tell their stories using digital storytelling models, they are transformed into self-motivated information consumers. Our job, as educators, becomes one of utilizing their natural gravitation to technology to fit our purposes of teaching state and national standards.
